I don't know whether this is good or bad (I wrote a thread in TNZ about this) but I find this medically fascinating. Essentially I have what they call radial-ulnar synostosis, an apparently rare condition in the arm, where two bones are ultimately fused together, thus creating an issue with function and rotation of my arm. We've known about this now for around 20 years, but the 'cure' has not changed in those years, since the condition isn't common and thus not many seek treatment.
So, after discussing it with my original orthopedic doctor, he decided to refer my case to a partner of his that knows elbows.
We met today, discussed it and the options. There are essentially no options, short of total reconstructive surgery that he can think of, and the total reconstructive isn't really beneficial, it just changes the function of my arm. What they would do, would cut my bones, turn them to a degree and then put them back in. This creates a few problems and a lot of variables, the greatest being how it would heal.
What also fascinates him is the fact that my brain decided that even though my right arm is -- defective, that I should still be a right handed person. This creates a little bit of a problem, though I have learned to compensate for this -- well for the majority. Writing is still a pain in the ass and neither one is legiable
.
But after talking, he said that he would need to think on this for a while because it doesn't exactly fit into any of his categories of how to diagnosis and treat. He is also referring my case up to the Mayo Clinic for specialists to look at and see if they have any other theories or solutions to this issue.
One of my friends' laughed at this because he knows the shit I've gone through in my life and is wondering how the fuck am I still alive. I mean pretty much the only two things that haven't gone out on me on my right side is my right kidney and my right testical...And I'm praying they don't.
That's right, my nose, my ear, my eye, my jaw, my hip, my arm, my lung, my knee, my tonsils (apparently I'm missing tonsils...???) have all screwed up in the past 10 years. And none of them are 'fixeable' by present day standards.
I'm going to be talking to some people about making a chart, taking bets on which organ/body part/function goes next and seeing which one does, because hell it's going to one day and we're going to have fun =)
This, to me, is what makes life so much fun.
Edit: I am making this thread because I find it fascinating really...
