It's sort of fun to have the "dead or not?" trick played on a doctor, I think. Neither of the technoheads would have been as good a victim to that trick.
And can we imagine LaForge pulling together a scientific-social event like that? Or Data failing to organize one of those with greater precision and control? Of course, a murder mystery would have been right down Data's alley...
Not the perfect plot, but a fun Crusher vehicle nevertheless. Not that I really appreciate the idea that TNG would have to do vehicles, or even solely character-driven episodes. It was more fun when there was adventure and drive to the plot during the first couple of seasons...
