I'm on Pretige #5
I don't think Recon is really overpowered. It's decent and all, throwing random flashbangs and getting Blackbird style info on your map certainly doesn't hurt... but Sleight of Hand is in that group and that's still one of the most useful perks in the game for anyone who plans on killing more than one person in any given life.
Extreme Conditioning is Extreme Garbage. Just a total waste of a perk. It just doesn't give you that much sprint, and it does nothing for the recharge rate, so after the initial burst if you're a sprint junkie, it's pretty much all the same. I never fully recharge my sprint.
Blind Eye is OK. I'll take the occasional Predator death and go with a more useful perk. Air support just isn't that strong in this game. Predators are decent. Attack Helicopter is better than the MW2 version, they get me on occasion, but what else is really a problem? With so many SAMs and EMPs in objective games, it's not an issue at all, and there's really not a lot of air support in team deathmatch. Almost no Pave Lows or Osprey Gunners. And they don't seem as good as MW2 Pave Low and Chopper Gunner respectively. Very few AC130s out there. Usually only see it coming from care packages. Not that hard to hide out indoors for 20-30 seconds.
Scavenger is decent, but not too useful for any of my classes. I'll just pick up someone else's weapon and hope for the best if it comes to it. Sometimes you can just run over your old dead body and snag a lot of ammo for your primary anyway. If you use a fairly common weapon resupply is even less of an issue. I do like getting Scavenger as part of my Specialist Stirke Package chain at 6 kills. Right around the time ammo would become an issue. Otherwise I'm usually going Support, so running out of ammo and dying is not a disaster. The other night I was completely empty on my MP7 and Akimbo FMGs, got a desperation knife kill and the challenge/emblem/title for that particular circumstance. Good times!
Screw it, let's go into the Tier 2 perks and just make this a full perk review.
Quickdraw - decent, but not as good as the effect from MW2 Sleight of Hand Pro.. I guess the reason is that SMGs are more dominant in this game, and they have very quick ADS time to begin with. Not a bad perk at all for Assault Rifle or LMG classes. And maybe Snipers assuming it works with sniper rifles, I think the equivalent perk in Black Ops didn't but I'm assuming it does work here.
Blast Shield - Garbage. Will not save you anywhere near as often as you think. This perk is IW overbalancing stuff. Grenades and launchers were pretty overpowered in MW2. One reason was Danger Close, so they got rid of that. Good. but then they made grenades and launchers weaker on top of that... ok... fine. Then they get rid of resupply options via scavenger and one man army... ok.. so now they are pretty much useless. But still they have to throw in a Blast Shield perk? The Blast Shield perk doesn't seem to work as well as the Blast Shield equipment from MW2. Most grenades will only wound you in this game anwyay, and blast shield doesn't change that. You get hit with a grenade, and you're pretty close to death. Maybe not as much strawberry jam on your screen as the hit you'd take without blast shield, but enough to where it's only going to take one more bullet to kill you anwyay. So why bother? This perk will not save you from two grenades. This perk has saved me from Dead Man's Hand though... but that doesn't come up often at all. The pro version gives you some immunity to flash and concussion... but not enough. Concussion doesn't really change, if you're already aiming the right way you have a decent chance of being ok, if not, the blast shield isn't going to help. The reduction to flashbang effect is ok. It does help... it's just not enough to waste a perk on.
Hardline - Pretty good, just make sure you have a loadout that works with it. UAV, Care Package, CUAV.. things that don't require a lot of kills. I can get like 7 care package in a TDM game with hardline rush SMG style. Also is a good perk for getting experience bonuses when you use it with low level point streaks. I also like using this as a perk under my specialist package so that I can get two tier 3 perks at one kill and just kind of sacrifice tier 2. I like the tier 3 perks.
Assassin - Ridiculously overpowered. Counters just about everything! The pro version makes you immune to counter uav and EMP? WTF? The no red name when people target you is also WTF, because it completely destroys Marksman, which is an otherwise underrated perk. But assassin is so damned common, it's hard to justify marksman.
Overkill - Kind of useless. If you pick two primaries with different run speeds you get stuck with the slower of them.. .kind of limits your options. Machine pistols can be perfectly viable weapons without wasting a perk slot... and you can always pick up a second primary off a corpse
And on to Tier 3
Marksman - The pro effect is only useful for snipers, but the regular effect is great with an AR or LMG. Only drawback is that assassin is extremely popular and completely counters this poor perk. They should have made it so that they cancel each other out, but Assassin just wins outright.
Stalker - Not so good for SMG since you already run around at seemingly full speed in ADS, but it sure makes an AR feel more spry. Moving at that speed under ADS really does make you hard to hit. It can make it hard to aim though, but this perk does let you preaim EVERY corner with no penalty, and that is pretty huge for non-campers. The explosives delay in the Pro version will prevent cheap deaths as well.
SitRep - My favorite perk in the game... can't live without it. Mostly for the pro version, but being able to see enemy equipment wallhack style keeps you alive as well. But SitRep Pro... makes your team and yourself sound much quieter, makes enemies sound much louder... get a good pair of headphones and it's like having ESP. you've got to understand that in COD games you're limited to a pretty narrow field of vision, like 60-70 degrees or something ridiculous. You just can't see everything coming... but hey, you can HEAR everything coming. This reduces incidences of me being caught off guard to Dead Silence users, and hardcore campers.
Steady Aim - Love the perk, grab FMG Akimbo and that gun that looks like a Super Soaker and have at it! Hipfire is just plain fun, feels like playing Doom or Quake or something... back to a time with no ADS. The pro version gets your weapon ready to shoot faster coming out of sprint. Pretty good for an aggressive player like myself. Definitely a perk that finds its way into my Specialist chain
Dead Silence - A good perk for Free For All, where sitrep doesn't shine quite as much because there are no teammate sounds to reduce, and more people key in on sound. In most game types this perk isn't as useful. In MW2 Ninja Pro had other benefits, some of what is in Assassin now, but in this one they gave you the immunity to fall damage in a game without that much fall damage... so this perk is a lot less common than Ninja was... Using this for sound in regular game types does't work that well. Biggest problem is your teammates are just as loud as the enemy. And they tend to spawn two feet behind you and start tromping about, so you will either overreact to people springing into existence, or become desensitized and miss sounds from enemies. Though, as a SitRep user... whenever someone DOES use this perk it pretty much destroys me. The game claims that the two cancel each other out, but of course they don't. Dead Silence is mostly just a perk that puts you at an advantage over SitRep Pro abusers... but there just aren't that many people going all in with SitRep for some reason, so that limits Dead Silence's usefulness.
