Must all Short Treks be DSC-only?

The Short Treks we know of so far, all supposedly take place in the same time frame as DSC (and yes, I am aware of the tagline for "Calypso", I'm just ignoring it :p ). Is this a requirement? Or can future mini-eps take place in other decades or even centuries?

I'm guessing it will evolve. Right now its just an hour of Trek using existing sets. When there are more sets they will have more options. I guess it also depends on how they perform. I could just be a stop gap solution to a problem that will be solved by having 3+ shows airing over the course of the year.

They're Discovery-related because that's the set and props that they have. I doubt they want to spend money to build additional sets.

When the Picard show comes online, I expect to see Short Treks feature those sets. (if Short Treks continue)

They're unlikely to want to design and build an entirely new era for one fifteen minute short, and the idea of them is to market the second season of the show, so I doubt it will drift far from the show.

Yes---next question.

I think the 24th/25th Century shouldn't be reintroduced in a short. It deserves something bigger. After the premiere of Picard Series, though, I don't see why not.

They could always use all-CGI sets. In fact, isn't the Discovery shuttlebay (when you're looking out into space) already done this way?

And if they do a Short Trek in another century, they might have to build a new set, but they can always keep that set and use it again later. Especially for alien environments with more advanced tech.

I think they'll make Short Treks of whatever show is in production, and that's why Netflix hasn't picked up the series. They're not paying for Short Treks based on series they don't have rights for.

Another thing they could do is have a Short Trek that takes place in the present day, with an ancestor of a well known Trek character. Like that VOY episode "11:59". Then they could go on location!

it'd probably way easier to watch a 15 minute short shot on a digital set than a full length episode, so yeah i'm here for it. give me short treks from all periods of the franchise, pick up with admiral archer for 15 minutes or something.

But location shooting is expensive and the entire point of the Short Trek seems to be to be cheap extra content, that's why they use standing sets and minimal cast.

Nothing announced except it's set after Nemesis and it's the politicised show Sir Patrick has always wanted to make.
Oh. That sounds "fun".
Yep, prepare for hours of THIS!<--- (He lobbied for this bit in ST:INS):
