Music of other cultures

We've heard Klingon and Talarian music, I believe, and perhaps a bit of Vulcan music (though I haven't seen much of TOS, only read it, so I don't know)...but I was wondering, what do you imagine the music of some of the other Trek cultures sounding like?

For instance...for me, Cardassian music has become associated in my head with composers Reich (well, some of his later stuff, mainly 18 Musicians forward) and Glass--repetitive, pattern-driven, and probably with the greatest accomplishments being in abstracted stuff where artists don't have to worry about their music being construed as against the state. I know some would probably find maddening a lot of the Reich/Glass stuff I love, but to me, it just seems that a culture that has stuff like "repetitive epics" and "serialist" poets would thrive on this.

Other cultures...I'm not entirely sure what I think, and I'd be curious to hear what you think different cultures' music might sound like.

I remember episodes where they played ferengi music, the horrible screechy stuff, fits them perfectly

I've wondered about the Romulans, and what comes to my mind is maybe something along the lines of Wagnerian opera. Maybe that's too close to the Klingon ideal, but...

They always seemed, from what little I know, to have an interesting mythology, plus lots of strong emotions bubbling just barely under the surface, and they had that strong imperialist streak, too. I think they'd get into some of that master race stuff that Wagner slipped into his operas (or at least that some people claim Wagner slipped into his operas - Wagner's still a pretty controversial guy).

It appears that the DS9 opening theme is actually supposed to be Bajoran music. Or at least it has got all the elements of the Bajoran music we hear that Varani guy play at Quark's in "Playing God".

(On a related note, one wonders if the TMP/TNG theme ain't actually the Official Starfleet March or somesuch "in-universe" composition.)

We've heard Klingon opera, but also in one VOY episode, there was some industrial metal, Nine Inch Nails sounding Klingon music. I imagine the Klingons would like to rock!

"Suddenly Human" had some "modern" Talarian music which apparently appealed to the youth (but certainly not Picard).

"Menage a Troi" had Algolian (something like that) ceremonial music; something like playing hammers on bamboo

Aquiel sang the celebratory Horath, which is Haliian

Jadzia recalled the musical piece composed by her previous host Joran in "Equilibrium", so that might be considered Trill music. Same goes for the "Inner Light" flute piece which might be considered Ressikian.

May I ask what episodes?

Weren't there some to be heard on early DS9 episodes in scenes shot in Quark's?

I think that was Bajorian music played during the Gratitude festival on DS9 in Quark's bar. I don't think that we have had the pleasure of hearing Ferengi music;).

As for the Romulans? For some reason the Blues spring to mind...:rommie:

^ Really? I'm trying to picture Vreenak, say, listening to Ray Charles or Etta James, and I am failing. ;)

^ Neither did I. Heavy metal is one thing -- this sounded like heavy metal played backwards.

Klingon opera has lyrics - I think I can remember Worf singing along with a...chorus or something. Or maybe he translated? Maybe I'm making that up, but I don't think so.

Anyone got audio of this stuff? I would LOVE To hear it!
Look up the Season 3 episode "Real Life" -- the one where the EMH has a holodeck program including a home and family. Scene 2, I think it is.
