Murry Gold's at it again...

@23Skiddo...why would you assume that Matt would get a version of "Song for Ten" didn't that music specifically have to do with the Ood and their connection to the Tenth Doctor?

Although you've been corrected on the fact, I understand where you're coming from on the question. I meant Smith has yet to get an equivalent to Song for Ten in terms of a song that directly is identified with him. Gold has created a theme for him, of course - "I Am the Doctor" - and it's great. But Tennant had no less than 2 of those themes: "All the Strange Strange Creatures" (the trailer music) and of course the piece of music whose name escapes me that features the lone female voice which was also used for the Ninth Doctor. The Jenkins song was very much a one-off and it's doubtful we'll see it reprised anywhere. Even "My Angel Put the Devil in Me" got a reprise during Tennant's time, and IMO "The Stowaway" is likely to become a Christmas classic in future years if some big name covers it.

Yeah, I pretty much lay it at the showrunners feet. We know RTD liked making the show larger than life, including the music. The current crew likes things more atmospheric and intimate. Its not necesarily bad, but I do miss having those amazing themes that instill emotions just by listening to them.

And I definately miss the DW Proms.

There was one in 2010. This year rather than do a Proms they did the Symphonic Spectacular down in Australia. They haven't been cancelled or anything. They only do one every other year, and you can probably lay a bet that they'll do one for the 50th anniversary in 2013.

As for the showrunner - well, every production era has its own feel. That's part of the reason why Doctor Who remains so popular. "Educated" viewers can often tell you how Graham Williams' era or Philip Hinchcliffe's era differed. Verity Lambert's era had completely different feel from Barry Letts'. Whoever eventually takes over from Moffat will make DW feel completely different again. RTD gave a somewhat operatic style to DW, while Moffat reeled that in and has given the show a different voice. I don't expect another "Vale Decem" moment when Matt Smith regenerates. We're more likely to see something quiet and understated like we saw towards the end of The Big Bang when he went to visit young Amelia and prepared to die.

The Doctor's Theme is the tune introduced with Eccleston. Tennant had at least two variations of this tune, The Doctor Forever and The Doctor's Theme (Series 4).

Hm. You know, I never considered "The Doctor's Theme" or its variations to be for Tennant or Eccleston, per se. I considered them to be themes for the overall character of the Doctor, as applicable to the First or Fourth or Seventh as for the Ninth and Tenth. I always considered "All the Strange, Strange Creatures" to be the Tenth Doctor's personal theme and "I Am the Doctor" to be the Eleventh's theme.

Well, the fact that they abandoned it completely for the Eleventh Doctor kind of means it's strictly representive of the Ninth and Tenth Doctors.

Actually the Fourth Doctor had his own little theme back during the Williams era. It was only nine notes though, and I think I'm probably the only one who remembers it. :)

Been scouring Youtube for it. No luck yet.

I don't think there is really any need to give Matt a second theme. There are already several variations of "I Am The Doctor" in fact there is a youtube video where someone has put them all together, it is over 40 minutes of the same theme! That being said I guess it would be interesting to see something new, I just don't think it will happen.

Actually, I'm kinda' surprised the '05 (to the present) series never composed a variation of the Grainer score to use as the Doctor's theme. I mewan one that would weave it's way in and out throughout the story.

The closest to this idea was briefly used, well, just one time, when Tom Baker's Doctor tries on a succession of outlandish outfits in "Robot" episode 1. When he finally exits the TARDIS with his iconic fedora and scarf, we hear 3 notes of the Grainer theme (not the preamble "beat", but the "Doo WEE doo...").

Sincerely,

Bill

BBC had to jump through a lot of hoops to be allowed to use Grainer's theme for the Nu series. One of the conditions they had to agree to was that it would only be used during the opening and closing credits, never during the episode itself.

Yeah, not sure we need a theme for Eleven. I'd rather have the music carry on from one Doctor to the next.

Of course that being said, I'd love nothing better than to see an album or original music some day. With a theme done for each Doctor.

Which is odd. I always assumed that like the show, they already owned the music.

No, it's owned by Grainer's estate, and they know they can hold BBC by the balls for it. I think they charged something like $25 000 for it to be used in the 96 telemovie.

Ah, that would explain it. I knew Terry Nation arranged co-ownership of the Daleks, but I didn't know Grainer had done similarly with the main theme.

Bummer, because it seems an obvious thing to do (if it weren't for the restrictions).

Thanks for the explanation.

Sincerely,

Bill
