MUMMY Reboot: Universal planning 'dark' franchise restart

[And I'm not opposed to a remake, I like updated monster movies every now and then, but it is a little bit soon to be rebooting this one when there hasn't been a full big screen Dracula reboot since 1992.

Well, there was Dracula 2000, with Gerard Butler, in, er, 2000. The character also appeared in Van Helsing.

Now, if you'd said there hasn't been a good Dracula reboot since 1992... ;)

I really liked the first two Mummy flicks. Ya know, popcorn material! Pop in the dvd, get some noms and a beer and have fun. Third one.... not so much.

But.... a darker, edgier version could be really cool. Perhaps something with an Alien-atmosphere? As in, the original Alien. Horror without the overuse of gore like modern 'horror' has become.

Yep, as long as it doesn't end up as ponderous and turgid as the recent Wolfman remake.

They need to find the perfect balance of moody Gothic atmosphere and old-fashioned B-movie thrills . . . .

Maybe they should make it more of a slasher than an action movie, saving the action for the final confrontation moments.

The 1999 movie was the only good one.

Ugh, it struck me as nothing more than a cheesy Indiana Jones ripoff myself.

I'd love to see a properly dark and creepy remake, but you just know the studio won't be able to resist making it as fun and family friendly as possible in the end.

Have you seen the original Karloff version?

Oh sorry. I only know the 1999 movie and it's sequels.

Sorry if it sounded like I thought the 1999 movie was the best out of ALL Mummy movies(karloff, Christopher Lee etc etc)

Since there was no Indiana Jones movie for at least 10 years(1989 The Last Crusade) it was a suitable stand in

It mixed in the modern CGI with exaggerated 1930's quite well.

Replace the MUMMY characters with Indiana Jones ones and THE MUMMY would've been a better Indy movie than Crystal Skull.

If a little odder than previous Indy fare...I mean...undead running around and all (as opposed to transdimensional aliens).

No problem. This is just one of my pet hobby-horses; there's a tendency in contemporary pop culture (and internet discussions) to assume that anything made before 1975 or so doesn't count anymore. Even though Hollywood was churning out classic films long before the modern era . . . .

And, yes, I do watch a lot of TCM. Why do you ask?

As far as I'm concerned, I refuse to acknowledge the existence of that farce "Crystal Skull" and fondly remember the end of the franchise with the "Last Crusade".

I didn't mind them aping the Indy style, but it was completely missing the witty dialogue of those movies, and the writing as a whole was so much more generic and by-the-numbers.

Although granted, Indy 4 didn't do a whole lot better at those things....

Uh, The Mummy was a better movie than KOTCS. ;)

But, as much as I love that movie, the sequels were both terrible and not very compatible with each other. Bottom line, however, is that I'm all for more pre-WW2 pulp adventuring, with or without mummies, so I'll be keeping an eye on this myself...

Why does it have to be a "reboot"? Does every movie with Mummies in have to be a reboot of "The Mummy"?

Perhaps the term "reboot" has itself been rebooted, and also reinterpreted? Going back to its "darker" roots?

Piss off Universal! If they want a dark, emo Mummy film, why don't they just buy the rights to Anne Rice's mummy book? Or just remake the old Karloff version.

Who's to say they aren't? Is there any indication that Rick O'Connell or Evelyn Carnahan will be in this film?

Exactly. Isn't that basically the plan, to go back to the original horror approach--before the Mummy flicks got turned into period adventure flicks? Again, the Brendan Fraser version was the third remake of the original Karloff film--so why shouldn't there be a fourth?

The Mummy started out dark and emo. This is just taking Imhotep back to his moody roots . . . .

"He went for a little walk. You should seen his face!"
