Mulgrew was well cast

Have to say when Voyager first start I didn't like MUlgrew and screamed "Why or why did they cast her." But I gave her a chance and she won me over but there were times I wondered what the hell the writers were doing with her. Bujold was to old for the role but the irony of a Frenchman playing and American Captain wasn't lost on me.

Janeway is my Hero the way she got that ship home bought a tear to my eye.............I miss Voyager too

Btw I just bought season 4-7 on DVD ( I only had it on VHS) And Im going to watch it very soon

Superb actress, and managed to shine despite moments of rather poor writing.

I couldn't agree more. I think Mulgrew is a great actress and did the best she could the the writing for the show. I just can't see Bujold in the role.

EDIT: Ok, I just watched a scene of Caretaker with Bujold as Nicole Janeway. Horrible! She was so dry and monotone. It was just painful to watch.

They were hiding a beautiful woman with granny hair

I have to  at this statement. That is SO true that it's scary! I remember her saying that they always had an issue with her hair. Just as she was getting used to a new style, they'd up and change it again. :brickwall:
I also say yes to Mulgrew being cast as the Captain. Bujold was just plain terrible..had no charisma..just dull. I felt like shaking her when I saw her acting and say: this is an opportunity of a LIFETIME! Stop acting like you're fixing to take a nap woman!!!! WAKEY WAKEY YEAH! :D

Bujold came off as one of those "I'm a serious actress why am I wasting my time with this stuff?" types.

I really have enjoyed Mulgrew as Janeway - she's by far my favorite character on Voyager. I like how she put her own stamp on the role. I've always wondered if it was her idea to give the lecture in the beginning on not calling her "sir" but "ma'am". Either way, it made her different and unique right from the beginning.

There was an episode fo Red dwarf where this immortal mechanoid from the end of time decided to see if everyone who had every lived really deserved to live and had taken advantage of their lives... And if they hadn't, they were judged unworthy of the lives they had been granted. The droid then sent a microscopic bullet back in time to kill sperm that breached the egg which made the person and started the life which was unworthy and... You get the point.

Kathryn vs. Nicole would have been a great episode. :)

my husband was in the Army and it is source of constant irritation to him when the crew calls her sir. we are lucky to watch them on Spike and he rarely fails to comment when one of them does it.

But back to the original topic, IMO, Kate Mulgrew wasn't playing Kathryn Janeway as much as she was playing herself. She gave the character her own voice and mannerisms.

But I also think if another actress had indeed been cast as Janeway, most of us couldn't see anyone else playing that role either...

Well, that pretty much should go without saying. ;)

Never-the-less, I think Mulgrew was a great pick... even if she was second choice. :techman:
I thought the role was written with Mulgrew in mind and she turned it down the first time, so the role went to Bujoid?

No such luck. The part was written with a 'maybe this should be a female role' thing in mind. They picked Bujoid first because of her experience, and name. She never even read for the part first. At that time, Mulgrew was seeing someone who was associated with the upcoming Trek series. When Bujoid left, Mulgrew was called in to read, and got the part.

Just goes to show... it really is who you... erm... know.

:guffaw:;)

Interesting, I had always heard the opposite as to how she got the role. I guess it doesn't matter, she still ended up with the part. A true "professional", that Mulgrew.;)

I also think Lindsey Wagner would have done a great job in the role as well.

I'll agree the writing was the biggest issue with here and most of the characters of Voyager. But I think she was the worst main commanding officer in Trek.

Worse than Archer?

That's not how I heard it. Mulgrew had read for the part, got turned down then went to Ireland with her mother where she met her future husband. After Bujold left she was then given the part. She started dating what's-his-face after filming stared. Years later she married the guy she met in Ireland.

You two are probably right. God knows I should post when I'm drunk, but sometimes I just can't help myself... :borg:
