MTV's so-called "Reality" shows...

Ethros

Vice Admiral

God, with nothing to do today after Neighbours had finished, I put MTV on for a bit and watched some of their so called "Reality" TV shows
You know the shite- Laguna Beach, The Hills, and now there's a British version too Living on the Edge

Eurrgh, awful stuff. Full of the biggest bunch of fuckwits I've ever seen. They may be attractive but damn are they ugly inside. Just the most horrible, dumb, selfish, spoilt goons on Earth. What's worse is I imagine the vast number of teenage girls who would watch this garbage and think these people are descended from Heaven.

And this is supposed to be "real", don't give me that horseshit, I wanted to scream out "It's a FAAAAAAAAAKKEEEEEE!!!"
Totally ridiculous, just look at the camera angles to see how staged and set-up it must all be.

At least I can laugh at the American ones, it happening far, far away. But this English one is sickening. Full of the sorts of 'popular' people I remember from school, all looks and no personality. Plus in this they're all spending daddy's money and showing off their massive houses, etc

Anyway, I just felt like ranting :D
Anyone ever watched these shows, opinions?

What??? So you're saying living in a massively expensive loft without having to pay for it with a bunch of hardbodied roommates who like you don't have jobs, and your biggest issue in life is your angst ISN'T the real world?????

You know, I remember when people used to complain that MTV was going to be the downfall of our civilization because of the music videos... if only those people then could see the inescapable horror that MTV has unleashed on civilization now that it is officially out of both the music AND the video business and is in to the full-time (un)reality TV business.

I don't remember the last time I turned on MTV. It hasn't been "Music Television" in long over a decade. I don't really understand how people can even watch it, let alone enjoy it.

Meh. That was VH1.:borg:

I know that, but I promise I've never watched it.;)

Well I for one love the so called "reality" shows. I mean are they fake? Yes.

But more importantly....are they entertaining? Well I think so, so that's enough for me, regardless if they call themselves reality TV or not.

I for one like watching parents letting their spoiled kids yelling at them, or teenagers screaming and crying over a "dress", or cheesy lines like...."Well my answer is no.....Well then my answer is get out of my car"....hahaha, people, you just can write some of this crap up even if you wanted to, haha.

I mean it's fake in many ways, but in the end, the idiotic/stupid lines these people sometimes say are 100% sadly original, lol.

These "reality" shows on MTV are faker than Heidi Montag's, um, actually, everything about Heidi Montag is fake, her breasts, her lips, her face, her personality, her 'candid' photos where she just decides to pose despite 'not knowing there is a camera nearby'. I never thought I would see the day where someone would actually be more of a fake than Paris Hilton, but Montag has far eclipsed it

Ugly inside, you must be joking. Laguna Beach, at least for the first season, was cast with a bunch of people preparing for their future and planning to go to college with aspirations and ambition, and they are having a little fun along the way.

Anyone who says they are selfish is a complete utter idiot.

Besides, people smile and behave like that in real life, so the natural displays of emotion are very much like the people I see in college. Whether they are rich or not doesn't matter.

If you want to watch people who are ugly inside, watch Roseanne and the entire family on that show with the exception of the dad who seems to be the only rational one. The lead on Dead Like Me is utterly disgusting on the inside... Wretched even, with an absolutely horrible attitude. There are other shows with characters who have bad attitudes, but they elude me at the moment.

Laguna Beach is refreshingly upbeat and optomistic in comparison to some of the more wretched attitudes and rampant negativity I've seen on TV of late. It's quite refreshing to watch a bunch of kids having fun and who are optomistic about their future and who are making plans for the future. If you call that selfish, then so be it; you are wrong.

House is the only negative character I can stand, and that's because the show is so brilliantly written, and House is extremely witty... And underneath his self confidence belies his negativity.

If you are measuring real life people with real attitudes to actors on shows that are played the rest of the time, then yes, they are fake... Unless you think people like Horatio Cane and House are real. Then you have another thing coming.

The people on Laguna Beach display very natural attitudes. Only Seinfeld comes close in it's quick flow of delivery.

I observe the people around me, their facial expressions, how they walk, how they talk.

If you are looking for wit and entertainment on TV, that's one thing. But real life isn't like CSI either. Nor is it like Arrested Development, which is like watching a bunch of complete retards making stupid choices. I fail to see what is funny about a bunch of retards making stupid choices... Everyone on that show is a complete idiot. If I want dumb humor that's actually witty, I'll watch Monty Python.

But if you want realistic, look not to Roseanne, nor Arrested Development, or CSI, look to Laguna Beach.

Eh, I live in Orange County and all reality shows and lame shows about places in the OC are generally spoton to be frank. We're all pretty much shallow, rich, and beautiful. :techman:

Though really, the majority of TV reality television is lame, and VH1 is even more contemptible with its Celebreality crap replacing music video time...so it's not just MTV. :)

Case in point: Next.

Horrid show. If you're lucky enough to not know the concept, I'll spell it out...and ruin your life.

1. 5 Lonely people are on a bus.
2. 1 lonely person get to choose one of the 5 people on the bus.
3. At the end of the date, the dater can offer the datee another date, or a dollar a minute for the current date. The Dater can also reject the datee at any point, for any reason. This is never done in an adult way.
4. If rejected, the datee replies to the daters rejection in an equally mature way. Think if "Nuh uh....do you di-in't"...."yuh uh...I just di-id".
5. Take out ball-ping hammer
6. Hit yourself in head
7. Repeat

This formula repeats several times over the course of the 30 minutes of filler MTV has ordered.

Whats really fun to watch are the gay episodes. I don't mean gay as in a little lame...or insulting but GAY.

Really gay.

Stereotype gay.

Sets Gay rights back 100 year gay.

Sorta gay that you'll see in the store with a glitterly belt and tight tank top with Cher/Judy Garland on it and hot pants gay.

Not that there is anything wrong with being gay...but I've never met anyone as gay as they find on this show...and they have them on alot. Much more than is statistically prudent. Its like MTV has a gay factory (of course its in San Fran), and they're just pumping out massive amounts of gayness. These guys are the sorta gay that real gay guys wanna beat the shit out off. These are the sorta gay guys who are so gay and flaming...they're comically gay. So friggin' gay, that chances are, they're not going to be able to contribute much to society because they're all IN YOUR FACE GAY!

Think of gay. Now make that person even gayer. Now, wrap that gay person in body glitter and stick him in a club named the "Tool Shed" with "In the Navy" playing with loud bass. Now, put that same gay guy in a suit made out of condoms. Thats how gay these guys are.

Gay gay gay gay gay gay gay!

Insultingly gay.

Not that there's anything wrong with that.

The lesbians? They're cool.

Oh I like Next, but yes only in a way that's its so bad its good.
There was one where the girl in question was quite a butch, tough chick, and most of the guys on the bus were fairly small, nerdish guys.
So on her first date she's in a boxing ring, and the first two nerdy guys comes out, and she kicks the shit out of them in the boxing ring!
 It was so harsh! They didn't stand a chance, and obviosuly being sensitive guys they're not gonna feel comfortable fighting back against a woman anyway.
Ridiclious, she ended up choosing some big brainless, meat-head guy, surprise surprise

The funniest part is when the contestants on the bus make out they're so overly hot, and then the dater just takes one look at them and says "Next!"

I enjoyed the first Real World back in 1991 which was also my first semester at college. There was nothing "real" about it, however, it was like watching a sociology experiment unfold what with making a rocker, a rapper, a model, a dancer, and a bunch of other seemed-important-at-that-age archetypes live together. It was like taping someone first semester of college and editing it to bring out the inherent, if pointless, drama. I soon grew tired of it as the settings got more elaborate, the roommates got more unstable,
activities were contrived to center episodes around, and eventually the shows became little more than scavenger hunts with "Road Rules" and "Real World vs. Road Rules."
