Mr. Spock = Dr. Spock ?

We know we have people who have actually worked on Star Trek hovering around this board. One of them might have had professional or social contact with Nimoy. They need to ask him about the Carol Burnett appearance on camera and get the details.

I'd be stunned if he can remember that day in any detail after all these years. He was working such long hours at the time, it's probably a blur to him at best. Of course, if that guest appearance stuck in his mind for any reason, or if he kept a journal...

Short of that, I wish the video would turn up.

University systems and corporate lobbying for licensure have turned society into a walled garden of "credentialism" that didn't really exist in the sixties. It's a false sense of security that a credential safeguards the public - but it does effectively eliminate a lot of competition from those outside the cult/guild models of high cost memberships.

In contrast, imagine a world in which academic science can exist for its own sake outside privatized institutions. A public science driven by knowledge and elevation of all, rather than for patent-protected "intellectual property" and profit.

Just because you're not a cop doesn't mean you're a criminal and should be treated as such. The purview of private investigators has become limited to a guild system of licensed sponsorship and thousands of hours of apprenticing before licensure is granted - which has the effect of limiting competition, but not necessarily preparing good investigators who have to do things a certain way. There's not one way to investigate, indeed, security is a dynamic, evolving game of cat and mouse. It changes daily. No one owns a magic pill methodology.

Research has proven that the best psychological therapeutic outcomes stem from client-therapist rapport - not the therapist's credentials. A certificate does not a teacher make - nor does it disqualify the rest. All it does is establish you paid a lot of money for one proprietary perspective on knowledge that does not, in fact, belong to a single party.

Credentials are simply tools - not replacements for sound judgment. In light of this misplaced priority of credential over knowledge, a character like Spock could very well reject the trappings of qualification in favor of the freedom of discovery - the birthright of any intelligent being.

Not being a military specialist I could be wrong here, but aren't officers with doctorates addressed by the rank and not their title? So even if Spock had PhD's in astrophysics, computer science, and comparative xenobiology, he would still be addressed as "Commander" (with "Mister" being a more casual way of address) rather than Doctor.

I could be wrong about that.

By this logic, would they have called him Lieutenant Commander McCoy?

And I don't think you can explain it away as saying that McCoy's job on the Enterprise was actually as a doctor. Because Spock, as science officer, was also using the skills he gained during his doctorate, just as McCoy was.

Do Vulcans have Doctorate degrees?

And maybe he only has Master degrees, my experience is (limited) that people get Master degrees to work but Doctorates to teach at a University. That's an overgeneralization, but basically what I've heard and experienced.

Spock is more than a Vulcan, he's a Federation citizen. What he can "get" isn't limited by his planet of origin or culture.
