Moving to DC - could use some advice on neighborhoods

Hola all,

As the thread title suggests, I just moved to DC, but an obscure and hard-to-reach corner thereof, and am looking to rent a room in a shared house somewhere less isolated. I'm 26, and work 8-5 in Southeast, near the Navy Yard and Eastern Market metros, so a place either in that area or close to the Green, Orange or Blue lines (or convenient bus routes) would be best. Also, alas, my budget is on the smaller side, so I'm looking for something affordable. (i.e., not Dupont Circle, Georgetown, or the like. :p)

Anyone have any opinions on fun, lively and cheaper area neighborhoods for twenty-somethings? Thanks in advance! :)
 
I spent a semester in northwest DC (near the zoo) in 2007, but that was in student housing. The impression I got was that all the 20-somethings on a budget lived in Virginia or Maryland, and took the metro in to work every day. I didn't spend a lot of time in your area of the city, though, so I can't really offer anything useful about neighborhoods there.

I'd go for Arlington, Silver Spring (actually applies to a broad area of suburban Maryland). I'd generally avoid areas directly on green and orange lines. The nicer areas along those lines tend to be stops with houses instead of apartments.

There are some spots that are upcoming with nicer apartments but if your budget is on the small side, it probably is well above your price range.
 
Er, I guess I should have mentioned that I don't drive, so I probably shouldn't live too far off from Southeast... But, I guess the Metro service is pretty fast... I'm from San Francisco; not used to rapid subways... :p
 
Yeah, most young people take the metro in DC. Driving there is a nightmare (and affording parking a rich man's game).

I thought I'd never say this but the traffic in DC is nothing compared to the traffic in Baton Rouge :eek: :lol:

The drive home is a pain. Driving across DC was much more smooth.
 
I'm from Arlington and can highly recommend it. You can get pretty much anywhere via the Metro (including the metro station at Navy Yard.)

Too, Arlington was named the #2 best city to live in by Bloomberg Business Weekly two weeks ago, bested only by Raleigh, NC.
