Movies you think are overated.

Add me to the list of people that think 2001 is a hugely overrated movie. It nearly put me to sleep. And for a little more Kubrick hate, I couldn't even make it twenty minutes through A Clockwork Orange. The film completely turned me off.

Everything Quentin Tarantino ever made.

Abso-fucking-lutely!!!

I'd also like to add all three of the Lord of the Rings movies. God, did a lot of people get swindled out of their money with those!

I'm about ready to throw Iron Man into the pot, as well. It's only been a few days and I'm already sick of hearing it. It's just another silly comicbook movie with a lot of lowbrow, puerile action.

Quentin Tarantino movies were the worst action flicks ever. I'll take Die Hard over any Tarantino garbage anyday. Besides, we have 24 for dramatic tension, suspense and cool ass violent scenes. Who needs Tarantino crap.

Clockwork Orange is revolting. They made us watch that crap in high school. It was disgusting.

Well certainly they're terrible action movies, since they're not action movies at all. They're mostly crime dramas. The focus is the dialogue. The only one that could be classified as action is Kill Bill. Comparing Tarantino's movies to Die Hard is ridiculous.

For a slight change of pace... I enjoyed Casino Royale, but no way was it the be-all and end-all of Bond movies that some made it out to be.

It was the best one for a very long time though. I think it was just refreshing to finally see a Bond film that broke the cycle of tedious inevitability and ultimate disappointment we were all so very used to.

Well, that's a matter of opinion, too - I don't find the Brosnan Bonds as bad as some do, either. :D To each their own, of course, but the ado over Casino Royale was a bit much IMO.

Everything is a matter of opinion ;).

Can't argue with you there! I just think it was understandable, given that the series was percieved, rightly or wrongly, as having gone very stale.

I did like the film very much but the "zomg bond in love" montage got a bit tedious, and on the whole it was a bit disjointed. Pissed all over Die Another Day though!

^I agree it was better than Die Another Day but the movie just stops for what ? 30 minutes ? Nothing happens.

Okay, it's supposed to establish that Bond was in love and is then betrayed but I just don't think Craig's Bond is sympathetic enough of a character to make me care. I didn't buy him falling in love with Vesper anyway simply because she was such a typical modern day Bond girl. Every time they trot out another Bond girl who is Bond's "equal". If it was so easy to find people who are Bond's equal then what makes Bond so special ?

Anything with Leo DiCaprio.
2001 A Space Odyssey
The Blair Witch Project
John Wayne Movies
Pulp Fiction
Scarface
The Lion King
O Brother, Where Art Thou?
Oceans 11
Oceans 12
Oceans 13
300
Mr. & Mrs. Smith
Serenity

To those who chose 2001: A Space Odyssey as the most overrated movie, please turn in your geek card at the exit and don't ever come back.
Blasphemers!

AH! Now I must shun you!

Nah, I agree there is a major slow down when they get to Vesper and the whole Casino that's just bleh.

The only way I watch it anymore is with Rifftrax.

"He's not as graceful as the last guy."
"He's not as graceful as Daffy Duck."

The 1998 Oscar should have gone to Saving Private Ryan (especially since it was the last good movie that Steven Spielberg ever made).

You didn't like even 'Catch Me If You Can?' I knew of controversy regarding the quality of his other recent films, but not that one.

I suppose I should amend that by saying that Saving Private Ryan was the last "great" movie that Spielberg ever made. But because he's fucking Steven Spielberg, I just find it difficult to accept merely "good" work from him. Catch Me If You Can & The Terminal were OK but nothing nearly on par with what we should expect from the man who gave us E.T., Jurassic Park, & Raiders of the Lost Ark. (Although, in the interest of full disclosure, I haven't yet seen Munich and many people tell me that it's one of Spielberg's better ones.)

So long as we're mentioning Oscar winners, I couldn't stand The English Patient
Amen to that (again).
or Shakespeare in Love.
I enjoyed it for what it was, but the fact it won Oscars was a joke, and further proof (if any was needed) of the the general irrelevance of the Oscars. They've long been a matter of money (namely, which picture and people have the best advertising campaigns) over substance. Gwyneth Paltrow "winning" Best Actress ahead of Cate Blanchett was utterly laughable. Blanchett in a coma would be a better actress than Paltrow could ever be.

Maybe the Academy voters got Blanchett & Paltrow confused with each other. I know that I do that all the time. I also get Blanchett confused with Tilda Swinton.

Agreed. Casino Royale was OK but I would still put it below the 1st 3 Brosnan movies-- Goldeneye, Tomorrow Never Dies, & The World Is Not Enough. However, most movies ever made in the history of movies are probably better than Die Another Day.

I hate 300 & Sin City. Comic book geeks love them because they're so visually faithful to the source material. What this ignores is the fact that the source material is shit. Frank Miller is a hack in the midst of a 20 year testosterone rage. He should be locked away somewhere where the inmates aren't even allowed to have anything sharp to write with.

I wouldn't say Casino Royale was anywhere near as overrated as the badly aged, plodding, needlessly sadistic and illogical GoldenEye.

I don't dislike Blade Runner, I far prefer it to 2001, but I far prefer Alien to Blade Runner.

And despite the dubious politics, I still absolutely adore James Cameron's True Lies (which was an action comedy anyway), while Aliens was slightly better than Alien 3 and crapped all over Alien: Resurrection.

Here's a corollary type of question I've been wanting to ask. Perhaps it's been answered already and I missed it, but here goes.

Are there any films over which your opinion has changed over time? By that I mean movies that you once thought were overrated but later you felt better about? Or possibly the reverse. films you once loved but later thought.... "what was I thinking?!?!"

Must agree with Mutenroshi. The backlash against the transcendent brillance that is 2001: A Space Odyssey is a bit disheartening. Clearly, sci-fi geekdom is in need of an inquistion.

Rarely. I'll admit I dislike Alphaville less. I may even like it now. That's all I can think of off the top of my head. My tastes are fairly monolithic.

This will stun people that know me but... I hated Daredevil the 1st time I saw it. I thought it was too dark & too violent. But after my friends dragged me to it one evening, I became accustomed to its violence and began to appreciate its darkness. Furthermore, I saw a genuine emotional heart at its core. It's now one of my favorite movies.

Forest Gump gets worse upon repeat viewings. I thought it was one of the best things I'd ever seen when it first came out (back when I was 11:rolleyes:). I rewatched it in my high school economics class (taught by a shitty teacher who was really the assistant football coach and knew shit all about the subject matter, so we just watched movies the whole semester). When I rewatched it, I realized how sappy & emotionally manipulative it is. I don't hate it but it's far lower on my list now.

Actually, when I first saw Blade Runner (I think I saw it on tv or video) it almost put me to sleep. When the Director's Cut was re-released in theaters I decided to give it another chance (this was a few years later and I was a little older ;)). Suffice it to say I was blown away.

It's probably become my one of my favorite movies of all time just behind 2001.
