Been watchin' the two seasons of Sports Night via HuluPlus and the fourth season of Orange is the New Black via Netflix Instant the last couple of weeks, with some second season The X-Files mixed in, too.

Watched the Tom Papa comedy special the other night, needed a laugh. And it was pretty funny. Makes me wonder if his whole pre-show is some sort of vaudeville act.

Tonight, I have watched a few features on Netflix.

Fastball is a documentary of the history of fastball pitching in major league baseball, including who the best fastball pitchers in the sport's history, as well as how the speeds have been measured through the years. Pretty information. ANd it was narrated by Kevin Costner, with interviews from Hank Aaron, Nolan Ryan, Goose Gossage, Wade Boggs, among others.

Followed that with the first of tonight's two D.L. Hughley stand up specials.

And I watched Michael Douglas & Diane Keaton in a Rob Reiner geriatric romance movie. It was more than a little disappointin'.

The Legend of Tarzan 3D - theater

Had to run some errands & stuff today, got over to Lufkin in time for the early bird matinee of the new Tarzan movie. I saw the commercial the other night, showed that it had Sam Jackson & Christoph Watlz, so, I had to go. Kinda bummed, Waltz didn't have a single good monologue in the movie.

Still, the CGI animals looked cool, the story didn't completely suck, and the 3D for the swingin' through the trees parts was pretty good. The movie never got too dark to where ya couldn't tell what was goin' on through the glasses, either, which is a big plus.

Got a plan to see the Independence Day sequel on Monday, 'cause, ya know, what better day to go?

30. The Shallows (2016) ⍟⍟⍟ - Pretty good shark flick. It was never boring, but suffers from having shown too much in the trailer.
31. The Purge: Election Year ⍟⍟ 1/2 - It's a step down from Anarchy. There are some very cool costumes, but the dialogue and direction are pretty pedestrian.

In a way I'm glad I saw this movie now instead of right after Inside Out. Where Inside Out was creative fun, and the best movie I saw in 2015, this movie was simplistic, average, and reminded me too much of Land Before Time meets The Lion King. This isn't a bad story, but it's really an average one, and for Pixar's standards, an average story is kinda bad. This film is marketed as what if the Dinosaurs never went extinct, yet that really wasn't what the film was about. It was that common coming of age story about facing fears and becoming the man you're destined to be. There are so many other movies that did it better that this one just came across as disappointingly bland.

I will say I thought the scenery was gorgeous and the best parts of the movie. That scene with the light bugs, for example, was beautiful to look at. Also, the music in this movie gave it a country western feel which I appreciated.

Watched RtK over the weekend. Kind of a dull movie where Bill Murray plays an agent who travels to Afghanistan for a USO tour and his singer bails on him. He then gets caught up with a hooker looking to retire, arms dealers, and a female singer who cannot, by religious custom, sing in public. Blah kind of movie.

For the Fourth of July, I went to see the Independence Day sequel. IDR was disappointing all around. Nice to see so many of the original cast back, but ya would think after 20 years, they could have written a better movie.

Took advantage of the new Tuesday discount at the Carmike for the Finding Nemo sequel. FD was cute fun, I laughed quite a bit during it. Stuck around for the post credit bonus, too.

Used a coupon & store credit to rent a couple of DVDs from Hasting's.

IStL was an alright biopic, if more than a little bland compared to some other stories out there about hard drinking musicians.

KFP3 was a fun entry to the series, though the first is still my favorite.

May wind up at the movies this weekend, just not sure what I'll go to see...

The Secret Life of Pets - Movie Tavern - This is the second movie now that I've seen at the recently opened Movie Tavern theater with my three kids here in Syracuse. The other being Finding Dory, which is pretty unfortunate for this film. We went at dinner time, Aaron and Kira enjoyed Mac & Cheese. While Ian enjoyed an Hamburger. I opted for the Hawaiian style Flat Bread, which was awesome! It's sad but the meal was better than the movie. Don't get me wrong, the movie is funny. I was laughing constantly during it, the whole movie theater was. The voice acting was outstanding, for the most part. Kevin Hart steals the movie as Snowball. He maybe the best part of the movie. The worst is actually Albert Brooks as Tiberius, he sounds like they put a script in front of him and he just read the lines. Juxtaposed against recent Finding Dory is startling, I was wondering is he drunk every time he says a line. The major problem is outside the laughs, there really is nothing to hold onto with this movie. It meanders and never really gets to the point, also not sure what the lesson the movie was trying to convey. I asked Ian what the movie was about, he really couldn't tell me. I asked him about Finding Dory and without missing a beat, he summed it up in a few sentences and Finding Dory he saw a few weeks ago. I think I'll watch Bolt again, love that movie.

Went over to Hasting's this afternoon, used a "Rent 2, Get 1 Free" coupon.

S2 continued on from the first, with the same demon targeting a new family, two boys with an abused mother caught up in a custody fight. I saw the first in theaters, gotta say this one was a bit better, especially the home movies. The ending kinda peeved me off, though.

T9 was a pretty good corrupt cops drama. Incredible cast. But, again, the ending was wrapped up a little too easily.

Watchin' T5W now...so far, so good.

Went over to the Carmike in Lufkin to the last bargain matinee of the day for latest The Purge sequel.

Not too bad a movie. I like how each of the sequels built on the original story, providin' a larger scope to how the annual Purge works in America. Good cast, too.

At the house, watchin' TBS via Netflix now. So far, so good.

Black Mass - HBO on Demand - I sat down to watch Sunday night's Preacher on the DVR but I hit the on Demand button instead of the DVR button and Black Mass popped up. Thought I would give it a watch and I'm glad I did. While I wouldn't call it a great movie, however Johnny Depp was fantastic in it. The movie itself was slow and plodding, but the story was somewhat captivating.

Ghostbusters 3D (2016) - theater

Made a plan to see the new Ghostbusters with a friend from my old job. She cancelled, but I went on without her.

Not as bad as I thought it would be, but still not too funny. The first two were both a lot better.

Nice cameos from the original cast members playin' different characters, and good to see the dedication to Harold Ramis. Dan Aykroyd's cameo was my favorite.

With the 3D show, the picture was letterboxed, and effects such as slime, ghost explosions & proton streams extended into the black bars, addin' to the effect.

Several bonus scenes throughout the credits, with the big one at the very end. I turned out to be the only one in the theater that wasn't an employee by the time it came up, though. Guess folks didn't know to stick around for it.

For a subject matter as serious as CTE, I thought this movie was a little bland. It had a great performance from Smith (Though I'm not sure it was Oscar Worthy) but all the other characters for kind of forgettable. What saves this movie other than Smith's performance was the scenes with the NFL players. We needed more powerful moments like that in this movie to really nail the point home. They were chilling and hit you in the stomach as to how serious this issue is and how the NFL keeps denying it.

I really enjoyed Star Trek Beyond. I thought it hit the right notes emotionally for a Star Trek film, and the action was very exciting. It also provided some great character moments such as the stuff between McCoy and Spock. I also really liked Jaylah and "Montgomery Scotty", and I hope Jaylah sticks around for the next film.

I think if I had one issue, it felt like Krall could have been developed a whole lot better. He felt one dimensional, and his Motivations weren't all that well explained.

Other than that, I had a great time with this movie and the tributes to Leonard Nimoy were really nicely done. I'd call this the best of the Abrams films.

Watching the Marvel Movies this summer, I'm really starting to notice the evolution of these films. You start with Iron Man, which was a huge movie the year it came out now feel really small. Then you had Incredible Hulk which other than the scene with Abomination at the end felt like a small budget for a pretty average film that was utilizing the CGI at the time. The next few films started to feel bigger in terms of visual effects or in the case of Captain America, just some high quality action scenes.

Now you have Guardians of the Galaxy, which puts some of the early Marvel movies to shame. Granted, this one is mostly an outer space adventure going to alien worlds, but the FX in this movie really is stunning and the climax is probably the second best climax sequence of any marvel film to this point, right below Avengers. In terms of characters and story, this movie is just all out fun, with an insidious soundtrack and I can't wait till we get to see these guys again. It's been two years Marvel, bring out the next Guardians movie, or at least give us a trailer.

Of course I'm typing this on comic con weekend, so they might have actually done just that. Still, I think it's about time we start getting excited for the return of the Guardians, because it's easy to forget that this movie came out two years ago, and watching it again tonight, it still is an excellent and just plain fun film.
