10 X-Men 2
Rewatch. The second movie based on the Marvel X-Men comics. The existence of Mutants is still a contentious issue. A military scientist plots to destroy them. Various events occur as the X-Men and Magneto team up to stop him. An interesting look at the lengths that some would go to deal with a real or perceived threat. It is as good as the previous outing. 8.5/10.

11 X- Men The Last Stand
Rewatch. The third movie based on the Marvel X-Men comics. A pharmaceutical company has developed a 'cure' for 'being a mutant'. Magneto takes advantage of the unrest that this causes to gain followers in order to combat the problem at it's source. A good look at the problems that the revelation of such a 'cure' would cause. But it's not as good as the previous outings. 8/10.

12 Do You Believe?
Do you believe? That is the question. It is a question that touches the lives of 12 different people as they are contronted by the Cross of Jesus Christ as they go about their lives. Over a few days some of the people are shaken by various events and the kindness of strangers. A very moving film about how God can work in mysterious ways, through circumstances and His people. It shows how the actions of Christians being lead by the Spirit can make a difference in people's lives. A very frenetic pace, but easy to follow. 9.75/10.

13 Man of Steel
Rewatch. A Superman origin film and the beginning of the new DC Cinematic Universe. Clark Kent is searching for meaning in a world he has struggled to deal with all his life. While on this search, he crosses paths with a reporter, Lois Lane who is researching the good deads he has performed. This is interrupted when General Zod, a criminal from his home planet, attacks Earth. A good movie, realistically depicting the alienation one would feel when one grows up different from those around them.
The motivations of Clark, Lois, Zod and others are also well depicted. A certain scene near the end doesn't negate the character growth of Clark (IMO). 8.5/10.

Chattanooga Film Festival:

15. Remember (2015) ⍟⍟⍟ - Christopher Plummer seeks out the Auschwitz Blockfuhrer who murdered his family. It's a little heavy-handed, but Plummer gives a solid performance. Almost as good as that of Ian McKellen in Mr Holmes last year. Dean Norris is also great in this.
16. Bad Blood (2016) ⍟⍟⍟ - I got to see the world premier of the world's first Werefrog movie. I really enjoyed it. The creature effects were great, the sound is hilarious (you'll know what I mean when you see it), and the acting is way above average for a horror movie. Mary Malloy stars in this and I wouldn't be surprised to see her career take off in the next couple of years. She's like Maika Monroe but with more personality.

Night of the Slasher (Short) ⍟⍟½ - A meta short film involving a guy who kills wearing a Leonard Nimoy mask. It was entertaining.

The Babysitter Murders (Short) ⍟⍟⍟⍟ - The best thing I saw all day. Get your hands on a copy. I don't even want to discuss the plot

Lake Nowhere (Short) ⍟⍟1/2 - It's ok. It's made to look like an old 70's/80's film on VHS.

Watched a few Tom Hanks movies on Netflix last weekend, includin' one that was "new to me" - Larry Crowne. Kinda hard to believe someone would be fired from a retail job just because they don't have a college degree. Isn't that who retail jobs are for, for the most part? I don't expect the Wal-Mart cashier to have a doctorate in anything. Some good humor throughout, but didn't much care for the romance with Julia Roberts' professor.

Watched Jimmy Carr's latest stand up, a Netflix original. Very crude, but some jokes did make me laugh.

And the first trip to the theater this month was earlier today! Took my sister & nephews to see BvS 2D. We were all decked out in DC t-shirts (Batman, Superman, Green Lantern) for the cheap matinee. Got the popcorn bucket refilled, and Captain America: Civil War collector cups of soda. And then we sat down for the longest, dullest superhero movie I have gone to see in the theater for awhile. Dear lord, why?!?

I was not a fan of Man of Steel, at all, and now with this, I'm pretty much done with DC movies. Marvel or GTFO (with the exception of X-Men, 'cause more of those have been good than bad) 'til the next franchise reboot!

15 X-Men: First Class
Prequel to the X-Men trilogy and 5th film overall in the X-Men Cinematic Universe. As the world hurtles towards the Cuban Missile Crisis, various factions of mutants find themselves on opposite sides. One is exacerbating the tensions between the United States and the Soviets, while another, lead by Charles Xavier, wants to prevent nuclear war. There are many different aspects and plotlines to this film. The faction of mutants lead by Sebastian Shaw, provide an easily believable threat as he easily manipulates the superpowers.
Xavier's search for other mutants with the help of the CIA, is also well written (including one memorable scene). The climax of the film is also well written. The way that the new X-men respond to the problems that come up is well presented. 8.5/10.

16 The Wolverine
The second film in the X-Men Cinematic Universe focusing on Logan/Wolverine. (It doesn't rely upon X-Men: Origins Wolverine, but has more influences from The Last Stand). Logan has been living in the Canadian wilderness for years since the events surrounding the Battle of Alcatraz. This is where a young Japanese woman finds him. Going to Japan, he is drawn into a struggle of various factions instigated by the plotting of a man he saved during the bombing of Nagasaki. He finds himself challenged like never before.
An interesting look at Logan as he deals with the situation with the Yashida clan, and the effects that it has on him, and the other people involved. The other characters, Yukio and Mariko especially, are well written. It is also a good look at some aspects of Japanese culture. 8/10,.

17 Mr. Peabody & Sherman
A film based on the Peabody's Improbable History segments of the Rocky and Bulwinkle cartoon series. A film about the relationship between a genius dog and the boy he adopted. It is also about what happens when the boy starts school and is drawn into an adventure through history with a former bully/new friend. Another plot line is what happens when a threat to that relationship arises. There are many more elements to this movie. One could examine each scene, but there isn't enough space here for that.
There are several sequences set in the past. Ancient Egypt, Renaissance Florence and Troy with the present being set in New York City. The Ancient Egypt sequences uses Ancient Egyptian culture and mythology well, despite getting some details wrong. The Florentine and Trojan sequences are also well done. 8/10.

18. Boy - ⍟⍟½ - This is actually slightly better than the trailers make it out to be
19. Invitation - ⍟⍟½ - It's a shame the rest of the movie doesn't live up to the final act. It takes way too long to get to where it's going

18 Captain America Winter Soldier
Rewatch. A Marvel movie, based on the Captain America comics. After a mission, Captain America discovers a conspiracy within SHIELD. He must find who he can trust, who he cannot and find out what is happening. Chris Evans continues his portrayal of Captain America from the first Avengers film, as do Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury and Scarlett Johanssen as Agent Romanov. As he investigates he discovers that an old foe has survived and has infiltrated SHIELD. He has to discover what has gone wrong.
A great thriller that goes in an easily believable way, that also reflects on how the world has changed since the 1940s. The action scenes in relation to the attack on Nick Fury and the battle on the Helicarriers are also well done. It also easily shows how Steve Rogers finds himself in a new world that he has to get a handle on. 8.5/10.

9) Homefront - B-

I'm getting a reputation as the guy who wants plot in action films, but Homefront seemed to be one action scene to the next, just to show that Jason Statham can beat anyone up.

Another major issue is Statham. Yes, he's the bankable action star, but he's not the family man the movie wants him to be. It's just not in his repertoire. Additionally, Rachelle Lefevre. What's the point of her character? It didn't help the every time she spoke I expected her to yell "Barbie!" or a dome to fall over the town.

This movie gains it's strengths on it's other stars: James Franco, Kate Bosworth and Winona Ryder. Unlike Statham, they are believable ask their characters, essentially methed-out backward hicks.

20. Southbound - ⍟⍟ - A horror anthology film that felt like it was trying to do way too much. The plot is close to indiscernible without looking at Wikipedia, in my opinion.
21. Hail Caesar - ⍟⍟ - Sigh... I really wanted to like this, but it's just really not that good. It meanders and none of the characters are particularly likable or interesting

7) Eye in The Sky (2016) - B

Eye in The Sky is a tense movie about modern/drone warfare and the political and military hand-wringing it brings. Helen Marrin and Alan Rickman are both really great and it was nice to see Barkhad Abdi (Captain Phillips) again. While I do agree that this movie came down to a little girl selling bread, I thought it did a fantastic job addressing the morality of collateral damage being done by drones. Whether or not you agree with the subject, Hood managed to make a smart political thriller with ethical questions leading to a very suspensful conclusion at the end, as well as some emotional tension in the aftermath.

Also, this movie really made me miss Alan Rickman. He was superb in this movie and he said a line at the end of the movie which was an emotional punch to the stomach.

Bridge of Spies

This movie has a figure who could inspire a Trek character-James B. Donovan (played by Tom Hanks). In the movie, Donovan is determined to do the right thing, rather than doing the expedient and easy thing.

Midnight Special - Alamo Drafthouse

I was in Austin over the weekend and got to the Alamo Drafthouse - Village on Saturday night for a shadowcast viewin' of The Rocky Horror Picture Show & the Alamo Drafthouse - Lakeline on Sunday for Midnight Special.

Seen RHPS several times now, so I won't be addin' it to the list.

MS was pretty good, though. Saw the before WTF a few weeks ago, wasn't sure what the hell the movie was supposed to be about, but my friend Esther wanted to see it, and I knew it wouldn't be playin' out here anytime soon.

Fairly simple story of a father trying to protect his son while being chased by the government...with an added scifi twist. Check it out, if ya get the chance.

22. Trainwreck ⍟⍟⍟ - The casting in the movie elevates it beyond the mundane. Lebron James was particularly hilarious.

20 The Mummy
Rewatch. The first movie in the Mummy series. An Ancient Egyptian priest who commits an indescretion against the Pharoah. As punishment he is mummified alive... Thousands of years later, in the early 20th Century, a young librarian working for an Egyptologist, her brother and a revolutionary scoundrel find themselves looking for the City of the Dead. They also poke into something they shouldn't. They quickly find themselves overwhelmed with the threat that the creature, the ancient priest has become, presents.
This film is quite good, taking the threat that the Mummy presents seriously. Also the situation in Egypt at the time (both times) is well presented. The main characters are also well presented, being more complex than merely a damsel in destress, a scoundrel or an ordinary guy. Even the Mummy has characterization. It is quite enjoyable, there is nothing that I would object to in the presentation or story. 8.5/10.
