Haven't ya noticed the last few years that a hopeful blockbuster has been released in March, because the movie releases in February & March generally suck & attendance goes down at the theaters.
Not really, but then I don't remember a movie released in march that made as much as The Hunger Games made. Considering the movies being released now (And Avengers making over 200 million in the first weekend) it was smart to release THG when they did.

130. The Runaways: (✩✩✩) - Live TV - The story of The Runaways that focusses on band members Joan Jett and Cherie Currie. Kristen Stewart plays Jett and Dakota Fanning plays Currie. The leads looked a little young, because they were, but I was amazed by Fanning's performance. She played a very troubled character who was more into being provovative than the music, and who ultimately burned out. Quite the change from the precocious little girl of days gone by.
131. Anonymous: (✩✩✩) - On Demand - A story making William Shakespeare a front man for the real person who wrote the works that he's known for. Directed by Roland Emerich. It's slow and plodding, but it's a fascinating story.
132. The Hangover: (✩✩✩) - Live TV - Finally saw this. I was on a plane two years ago and the guy beside me was watching it and laughing. Combine that with the good word of mouth and its financial success, and I figured I was in for something good. In the end, it was average, but I did laugh a few times.
133. The Hangover Part II: (✩✩✩) - On Demand - Saw this sequel right after. This movie followed the same basic plot with the same twists. Funny again, but average. Doesn't look like there will be a third one.
134. Duplicity: (✩✩½) - Live TV - Julia Roberts and Clive Owen as corporate spies. Meh. Paul Giamatti is always good in whatever he does though.
135. Leap Year: (✩✩✩) - Live TV - Romantic comedy starring Amy Adams, who travels to Dublin, Ireland to meet up with her travelling/workaholic boyfriend and propose to him. Problem is, she ends up somewhere else due to a storm and has to hire a guy to take her the rest of the way. Hilarity and romance ensue. Movie is average, but man, Amy Adams is a sight alright.

Domestically, it grossed slightly less than the original ($254 vs. $277 million). Internationally, the sequel blew the original out of the water ($190 million vs. $327 million). There will undoubtedly be a third film (unfortunately).

Pirates! Band of Misfits: This wasn't Aardman's finest achievement, but like all of their work in film and television, it was delightful and at times very funny. The voice over cast is great and the animation, as expected, is very imaginative and technically amazing. Plus, when will an American animated film have Charles Darwin as a character who gets some of the best lines in the movie?
Nice twist on the vampire genre (it's basically what happens after I Am Legend ends) and a surprising cast. It was good, but i wish they hadn't gone for the "looking for a cure" storyline.

One Day in the Life of Andrei Arsenevich: Chris Marker's short documentary (55 minutes) that serves as his eulogy for Russian filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky is an interesting piece, although I'm not crazy about the way Marker has adopted video since the mid-80s. Obviously it has allowed him to make films much cheaper, and just about completely on his own, but I can't help but feel nostalgic for the film look of his earlier work. Still, it's not to the detriment of this film, which is probably most valuable for offering us footage of Tarkovsky directing his final film on location (other footage, such as clips from Tarkovsky's student film of The Killers, have since become available in their entirety, lessening the film's impact somewhat).

Got together with my friend Zee & her son to see Yellow Submarine at the Drafthouse Village earlier tonight. They had never seen it on a theater screen, and before tonight, I hadn't seen it at all.
Odd animation style...I think I should have gone in stoned or something, if I did that sort of thing.
But Zee liked it - she was quotin' lines, singin' along, dancin' in her seat and was the only one to clap at the end.
Why yes, it is one of her favorite movies and I'm glad I was able to get her into it for free.

136. Puncture: (✩✩✩½) - On Demand - Based on a true story, a lawyer takes on the case of a nurse who got AIDS after being pricked by a needle. His fight pits him against the system itself, which is trying to prevent the sale of a safer syringe that will prevent such things from happening. Along with the case, our lawyer is battling demons of his own... prostitues and heavy drug use. Chris Evans stars and I got this one after seeing him in The Avengers. The movie also suggests that needle pricks are quite common and that the AIDS epidemic in Africa is due to reused needles and not unprotected sex. I found this to be a decent movie worth watching. It also has an ending that leaves you wondering about something in particular that happens. If you choose to watch, you'll know what I'm talking about.
137. Amelia: (✩✩½) - DVD - The story of Amelia Earhart. Stars Hilary Swank, Richard Gere and Ewan McGreggor. Christopher Eccleston is also in it. When I saw him, I couldn't place him until I saw his name in the credits. The movie tries to be grand with a big motion picture look and feel, but storywise, it lacks whatever makes a movie engaging.
138. Lymelife: (✩✩½) - DVD - A slice of life comedy drama set in the 70s against the backdrop of a lyme disease scare. Stars one of the Culkin brothers, Emma Roberts, Alec Baldwin, Julia Nixon, Timothy Hutton and whatsherface from Crossing Jordan. Lyme disease can cause mental problems and because of that, I think the title is also a play on the craziness that goes on in the lves of the characters. The movie isn't very good, but it gets more interesting about two thirds in.

Starship Troopers: Attended the 15th Anniversary screening of this film last night; several members of the cast and crew were in attendance, including Jake Busey, who I ended up sitting next to. I had a blast. It's not hard to see why it wasn't a blockbuster hit (the film trashes Heinlein's novel, the advertising campaign played things straight, the message "war makes fascists of us all" certainly doesn't sit well with conservatives, the pastiche of World War II era combat melodramas might just seem like soap opera to an audience in '97). Of course, for most of those same reasons, it's not hard to see why the film has a cult following and could fill a theatre fifteen years later.

139. Raising Helen: (✩✩½) - Live TV - A care-free career woman's sister and brother-in-law die and she has to look after their three kids. Stars Kate Hudson and John Corbett as Kate's love interest. It's also got a pre-Heroes Hayden Panettiere and Joan Cusack as the other sister, acting all frustrated and crazy because she didn't get the kids. Very basic and formulaic.
140. Waiting...: (✩✩) - DVD - A movie about waiters and staff at a franchise restaurant called Shenaniganz. It's got a lot of big names like Ryan Reynolds, Justin Long, Anna Faris, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Chi McBride, David Koechner, Wendy Malick, Dane Cook, etc. It's not very good though. It's very slow and plodding and it makes me not want to eat at a restaurant ever again.
141. Still Waiting...: (✩✩½) - DVD - This is the sequel to Waiting... This one takes place at a different Shenaniganz restaurant, but a lot of the original cast is back along with a few new faces. A lot of the action also takes place at the rival restaurant next door called Ta-Ta's, which is supposed to be like Hooters. Again, not a very engaging movie, but it does look better, as if they got a bigger budget, and it has some pretty funny moments.

Recently saw Anonymous. I remember people waxing wroth about the slander to Shakespeare but the Jacobi frame explicitly claims mere possibility. Taking this literally, the movie is still absurd. But the scene where "Shakespeare" comes off the stage of the Globe and is passed over the heads of the rapturous audience (is the phrase "mosh pit ?)makes it very plain that the makers do not intende this to be taken so solemnly.
That said, the real insult to the intelligence is the notion that Queen Elizabeth I could get away with multiple pregnancies and deliveries. The Tudors were tyrants but they still had enough enemies that such a thing would have been impossible. Also, cowardice, whtether physical fear of dying in childbed or moral fear of being exposed to a new husband as unchaste, could have explained very believably why Elizabeth remained unmarried and very limited in her sexual experience.
Emmerich's direct created at least one scene, the Globe theatre production of Henry V's St. Crispin day speech which is a wonderfully exciting, bravura rush. The notion that the hunchback in Richard III would be read as an attack on the younger Cecil is also perceptive. But for the record, it was Richard II, not Richard III, that Essex wanted produced as propaganda for his attempted coup. Richard II of course has a deposition of the king.
But the notion that "Shakespeare" was somehow a supporter of Essex at that point is absurd. The best explanation for how Shakespeare and the rest of the players escaped any consequences for propagandizing
for Essex is that Shakespeare et al. informed on Essex to the authorities. Much of the elaborate plot in Anonymous seems to be aimed at keep Shakespeare free of any nasty political taints like this.
Richard III was produced early in Shakespeare's and Essex's careers and may well have been aimed at Burleigh. Charles Nichol's The Reckoning, about the murder of Marlowe, offers evidence that Essex' people had a hand (a point Nichol himself doesn't follow up on, but then, Nichol didn't like Marlowe.)
There are also the apparently inevitable gross stupidities endemic to all Emmerich productions, along with the clever bits. My favorite is the nonsense about writing a play all in verse. If anything Shakespeare was more innovative in introducing prose. But the idea that Ben Jonson was what we might think of as a nice guy is a close second.
There is actually room for another fictional Shakespeare biopic, though I would hope it would eschew a cockamamie plot twisted around so that there could be a tragic "Shakespearean" ending. Especially since incest is not nearly as Shakespearean as a bunch of dead bodies. Really, I don't quite understand why Orloff and Emmerich didn't finish with Oxford, Elizabeth, Burleigh and Jonson all dead. Then we could have had an epitaph by Shakespeare's natural son, Davenant!
I saw Dark Shadows on Friday. I really liked it, but I was one of the kids who would run home from school to get home by 3:30 to catch the TV program. Not for everyone, but if you like (really) campy horror flicks, Tim Burton, and/or Johnny Depp, you'll get some chuckles. Liked the homage they paid to the Terminator trilogy and War of the Roses. There were probably more references in there that I didn't catch.
Edited to add: some of the actors from the old TV series were guests at the ball at Collinwood. Time to go "aww...!"
I liked this one a lot, although it was quite a weird film (and, having never seen the original soap, I don't know how closely it resembles it). With every other scene it changes from comedy to horror to drama and so on... It has a great cast, but it felt as if quite a bit was cut, because none of the plot lines really seemed to get enough time to be fully developed.

Finally saw this Zack Snyder film that is full of style and amazing visuals. The story is alright but the film is clearly about the f/x, which in fairness were good.
It appears the bulk of the film takes place in the proverbial "blink of an eye", just that second before Babydoll is lobotomized(?), whatever's done to her with that sharp instrument.
Apparently Babydoll loses herself in her dancing and every time she dances is where the film shifts to the "exotic" scenes of killing German zombies, androids and dragons. Her dancing also serves as moments when they are trying to pro-cur the items needed for their escape from the mental institution/impromptu brothel.
Visually a good film and it no doubt is playing to the male audience but not one I'd really have in my collection. The story while not bad just isn't engaging enough imo.

Picked up The Skulls trilogy release for five bucks the other night, watched the first movie last night.
Basically, a secret society at Yale that admits Joshua Jackson & Paul Walker into their ranks. One is a workin' class stiff while the other is the son of the society's chairman. The blue collar guy's roommate is murdered, and he sets out to discover the truth behind the society's cover-up.
Seems to me that if the society's were so secret, they wouldn't be so obvious as to have signs at their buildin', brandin' irons for new members, drop large sums of cash in bank accounts or give their initiates brand new/classicly restored vehicles. Kinda goes against the whole "keep the membership secret" thing...
Craig T Nelson (Coach), Steve Williams (The Practice) and William Peterson (CSI) all have supportin' roles.

Alien: Although I just saw this on Blu-Ray, I had the opportunity to see it in 35mm (along with Cameron's sequel) for free. I'm glad I took advantage of the opportunity. It's a great movie. I think I marginally prefer Scott's 2001 director's cut over the original theatrical version that I saw here, but it's not a big difference.
Aliens: Cameron's sequel isn't quite as good as the first film, but it's damned close. The theatrical version isn't nearly as good as the special edition, though. By cutting out every scene referring to Ripley's daughter, much of the thematic substance of the movie is lost. I also mourn the truncation of the sequence where the survivors hold up in the command center, as well as the deletion of the reel that shows Hadley's Hope before the Alien infestation, and many of the slow tracking shots through the Sulaco that give the movie more of the feeling of Alien. I still think it's terrific, though.
