Apocalypse Now: Call me crazy, but I prefer the longer Redux version of this film to the theatrical cut. The additions to Willard's journey up river make the film more mythic and better underscore the thematic underpinnings of the movie. Still, the theatrical version remains a powerful movie with two or three deservedly iconic sequences.

Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse: Twenty years on, this film remains the apotheosis of the making-of documentary, and it's hard to imagine something surpassing it. Mainly, it's a matter of access; Eleanor Coppola was able to shoot dozens of contentious incidents during the making of the film that, at best, other making of pieces might only get pieces of or report second hand. More unusual are her audio recordings of her husband's near mental disintegration during the making of the film, which offer an insight into the film-making process that is without the benefit (or hindrance) of hindsight or personal censorship.

Went to see the third of three Preston Sturges movies last night, the last one in the retrospective the Drafthouse has been doin'. I missed last week's, which I was bummed about, but two out of three isn't bad.

Joel McCrea was in this one, and in Sullivan's Travels, the first of the retrospective.

Its a bit of a convulated story about a couple goin' broke, she decides he needs money, so to help him, she plans to divorce him, pass their relationship off as siblings, and get a millionaire to finance his plan to build airports on top of cities. Followin' the advice of a cab driver, she heads to Palm Beach for the divorce, and her husband goes chasin' after her.

There's a twist at the end that comes out of nowhere, but other than that, it wasn't too bad.

Rudy Vallee was pretty good as the millionaire, too. He got some of the best lines in the movie.

Had a plan to see Red Dawn and Lincoln before work today, but since its six in the mornin' and I can't get to sleep, I may not make it to either of 'em...

Sapphire still needs to be slapped for insisting on that title.

I picked this up for $5 at Canadian Tire; this is the first time I've seen it since watching it in theatres when it first came out. It holds up pretty well. Since seeing it, I've seen some of Spike Lee's work, and it's obvious that Lee Daniels' style has been influenced by it a lot. The acting is still terrific, from the almost entirely female ensemble (the only male part of even the tiniest importance being Lenny Kravitz). I still don't understand why so much praise went to Mariah Carey over Paula Patton, though. Not to say Carey's bad, mind you.

Since this one has more characters, that leads to a higher body count among the Wolverines.

It did get a little better when Jeffrey Dean Morgan shows up, but again, he's not alone, like the Air Force pilot in the original was.

But even the characters have dialogue that tells how pointless the movie is..."North Korea?!? That doesn't even make sense!"

Gremlins is one of this month's "classics" playin' at the Alamo Drafthouse, so I went to the first show yesterday. A bit of a techical difficulty delayed the start of the movie, but other than that, it was a good time.

I'd seen the sequel when I was a kid, but never the original 'til now.

Followed that up with Lincoln. I enjoyed the history lesson, and its a very well made film, dialogue heavy, of course, but with incredibly performances from Daniel Day Lewis, Tommy Lee Jones & James Spader bein' my favorites.

And then I got together with my buddy Ryan to see The Comedy, since he's a fan of Tim & Eric. I am not. And the nicest thing I can say about the movie is that it isn't the worst Tim & Eric movie I've seen this year.

Stopped off at Blockbuster after work, rented a few movies 'cause I couldn't decide what I was in the mood for, and I'm watchin' People Like Us on DVD now.

Watching Brando play this weird character was fun most of the time, but I expected more of a western starring him and Nicholson. It was just all right, a bit boring and seems like a lost opportunity...

139. The Sessions (B+)

Another biopic focusing on a brief period in the subject's life, an increasingly popular form. The lead performances by John Hawkes and Helen Hunt are brilliant, particularly Hawkes, in an uncanny depiction of an almost completely paralyzed man. The movie itself is very light on plot or conflict, which seems true to life -- there's no villain or final obstacle here. It's largely observational. Not a great movie, but a good one, with great acting.

Starring Rachel Weisz stars in this film that takes place in 1999 during the Bosnia conflict. She's a UN Peacekeeper who uncovers a human trafficking operation of young women used in the sex slave trade. It's a good movie and I feel could've used a bit more time with Rachel's character before she flew out. They rushed her personal story a bit imo but I get what they were going for with the maternal instincts and seeker of justice as a cop. The biggest fault of the story, and it's not the film's fault, is that the sleaze bag people involved in this were never prosecuted or brought to justice. Diplomatic Immunity bullshit.

The Conspirator was the second of the three movies I rented from Blockbuster the other night.

Pretty good cast, especially Kevin Kline, and I thought it was an interestin' look at a part of American history that isn't usually shown, the conspiracy behind the assassination of President Lincoln.

Watched Bernie via Netflix, 'cause I was curious about it. And because I turned down the chance to be an extra when it was filmin' in Bastrop. Maybe I should have gone for it...

And it was another "based on a true story" movie.

Breaking Dawn, Part One was the third of my three rentals from Blockbuster. I actually thought I had a technical issue with the first DVD and took it back for a differenet copy...turns out its security locked to not play on computers, or something, 'cause I had the same problem with the second copy, but no trouble at all watchin' it on the roommates' blu ray player.

Just had to wait for 'em to go to bed, so as not to make anyone else suffer through the movie.

And last night, I finished up the Prophecy franchise...the last two movies suck all kinds of ass. And havin' Tony Todd in the fifth movie still can't make up for the lack of Christopher Walken, especially since he can't sit the way the other angels sit throughout the five-film series, so he's always shown upright.

Got a plan to go see the Monkees movie Head at the Ritz tonight.

And I may go ahead and knock out Breaking Dawn, Part Two tomorrow before work.

Got to the Ritz, and didn't have any trouble gettin' my ticket for The Monkees movie Head.

It was pretty bizarre, and a bit incoherant, but not too far removed from their television series, if ya have seen it. And I used to watch it all the time as a kid.

The Rescuers Down Under: Maybe it's just nostalgia speaking, but I think this is a far better movie than the original. It does away with the mediocre musical numbers, has much more dynamic animation, and is excellently cast (what's not to like about George C. Scott's turn as the villain, or John Candy's turn as a bird?).

The Great Mouse Detective: This was always my favorite Disney movie as a kid, so I know nostalgia is at play here, but I really enjoyed revisiting it. Vincent Price is excellent as the bad guy, the mix of simple digital animation with traditional animation is quite good, and score by Henry Mancini is a lot of fun. Sure, this is riffing off the Rathbone version of the character more than the original stories (Rathbone even has a cameo as Holmes!), but it's fun.

Death Wish: I've seen all five Dirty Harry films, but not even the worst of the bunch prepared me for this tripe. The cinematography is dull, the direction is lifeless, the writing awful, and the acting...well, let's just say I don't think Jeff Goldblum, Denzel Washington, and Christopher Guest have kept this on their resumes. Charles Bronson is actually serviceable (and not too old, as he would be in the inevitable sequels), but the film is really indefensible in the ways that it justifies vigilante justice and portrays the poor. One character even suggests rounding up all the poor and putting them in concentration camps! Bronson laughs this off (!), but later, after his wife is murdered and his daughter raped, it seems like he might agree.

It does have a pretty neat Herbie Hancock score, though, which is about the only thing positive I can say about it.

Outrage: This is an insightful, well put together documentary about closeted politicians and their anti-gay policies, although those familiar with the subject won't find much new here. It's amazing (and reassuring) how much things have changed in the four years since this film was made, though; most of the figures discussed are out of office and, in many cases, out of public life altogether.

140. Man of the Year

Robin Williams plays a late night talk show/news parody host, who tries to run for president. This could have been such a fun film, if they had focused just on the election and dropped the conspiracy stuff; but as it is, I found it only average.

I'm not going to add these to my list but with the excitement of Skyfall, I saw Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace in a relatively short timeframe and I think I gained a new appreciation for QOS. Yeah it's hindered by the fact that it doesn't "feel" like bond, but it's not the worst Bond movie I've seen, and if you do watch the two more back to back, you at least understand what is going on. I think it also helps that I'm getting used to Daniel Craig as Bond and going back to watch his first two was a little more easier to swallow than it was when we were in the transition phase of Pierce Brosnan.

So, I watched the remake of one of my favorite classic scifi movies in the history of every yesterday.

And it sucked in so many ways, I can't begin to imagine how it could have been much worse than it turned out to be.

Picked up MH from the discount bin last night, and watched it when I got up this mornin'. The CGI for the characters was pretty flat & lifeless, which may have helped make the house look awesome. Almost wish I had taken the time to go see it in 3D at the theater when it first came out.

After that, I grabbed a shower, put on my Team Edward (James Olmos) t-shirt, and came into work to see the final movie of the Twilight "saga." Tomorrow's the last day for it to be free, and since I have to open at work...

And, to be honest, it wasn't as terrible as the previous movie. Yes, the dialogue was still bad, but it wasn't so awkward. And despite the creepiness of Jacob & Nessie, Taylor Lautner wound up bein' the best thing about the movie.

That final battle, though, was bullshit.

Ben Affleck and Jeremy Renner star in this Beantown area thriller about some bank robbers. It lived up to the hype. Great movie indeed. I can't really see any flaws in it from a drama standpoint, action film or acting.
It co-stars Rebecca Hall whose playing Maya Hansen in Iron Man 3 and I hadn't seen her in any thing to get an idea of her. I'd wanted to see this so it was a win/win and worth watching for sure. She has range no doubt.

The Amazing Spider-Man: At my parents' home for the holidays, and this is the only movie on their shelf that I hadn't seen yet. It was...perfectly adequate, I guess. I have no idea why they chose to set it during high school, though. The age issues of the leads aside (Garfield was 28 when he made this, Stone was 23), the movie asks us to swallow the premise that Gwen is the chief intern of a major research scientist, and then barely exploits the high school setting at all. I was surprised that Martin Sheen didn't get the famous "with great power..." line before his Uncle Ben was killed. The best part of the movie, I think, was The Lizard, essentially a take on Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, but a good one. James Horner's score was at times familiar and at times forgettable -- not unlike most of the movie, really.

Obviously, this was made so that Sony could retain the Spider-Man movie rights for a little longer, and that commercial motive is fairly evident on screen. I never saw the poorly-reviewed third movie, but I thought the first two were decent if not exceptional comic book movies, and I have no idea why Sony didn't just make a fourth film with the original cast. The best idea here (the Lizard) would have been a perfect fit for a fourth movie; the rest consists of material that Raimi's films already covered. The only other truly new idea is the mysterious backstory of Peter's parents -- which this film is so disinterested in, it abandons half-way through, leaving it for the sequel.

One other point of interest: the visual effects. I don't think I've ever seen a blockbuster that so definitely alternated between interesting sequences of live-action and tedious, sometimes silly (i.e. the crane scene), and often unbelievable visual effects. Bluescreen backgrounds were often flat and over-lit, and the computer animation never once even approached photorealism. The worst offender might be the Oscorp Tower, which never once blends into the New York city skyline.

This wasn't the fiasco I had been expecting, but it was hardly memorable -- just another comic book movie to fill the afternoon hours on cable.
