James Bond returns, after fours years of doing battle with the most nefarious villains of all: MGM bankruptcy lawyers.

The Bond franchise has been notoriously producer-driven (the personal preserve of the Broccoli family, basically). Sam Mendes is, by far, the biggest director who's ever taken the franchise on, and (together with Roger Deakins) the result is one of the most stylish films by far. Plotwise it feels like some of the better of the ideas in GoldenEye and The World Is Not Enough have been filtered through the lens of a retro-return to the Connery-era status quo. Essentially, the series reclaiming its distinctive identity after the Bourne-style trappings the first two Craig films immersed themselves in. The result is still more serious than most of the franchise, but it's got some of the spectacle and humour back.

I remember when the Bourne Films came out there was talk about Bourne being the next Bond and that Bond might have become out of touch with the mainstream as far as the espionage film goes. Well, I think I can safely say after seeing Bourne Legacy (Which was not all that great) and watching Skyfall last night, Bond is back with a vengeance.

This was a great film, and a lot better than Quantum of Solace. This was the first time really where I really started to believe Daniel Craig was my favorite Bond, after years of thinking it was Pierce Brosnan. He got the mannerisms down better, especially his scenes with the New Q (Who I also really really liked) and Moneypenny. Also, Javier Bardem was a great villain. If there was a minor quibble I had with the film it was that some of the scenes felt like they went on forever (Like the scenes in Shanghi, even though it was great to look at) but those ending scenes and getting to know more of Bond's backstory made up for it. Also really liked how it ended, which brings me to this next point:

I just wanted to thank Dame Judi Dench for the years she gave to the Bond Franchise. I pretty much grew up with her as M, even though I've seen a few of the classic films, Dench felt like "my" M. It was really sad to see her go like that, but in the end, I'm happy they gave her a great death scene and memorial. It also allowed Bond to be set up for another 50 years, now that these trilogy of movies covering Bond's backstory and beginnings are done.

Looking forward to seeing where Bond goes next.

(✩✩✩½) - DVD - A 39 year old admissions officer invites a student back to her place during the day for sex and what follows is a budding relationship and a lot of past issues that resurface. Stars Laura Linney and Topher Grace. Paul Rudd also has a small role as Linney's character's brother. I think this is the first time I've really seen him in a dramatic piece. Just had to say that. Anyway, back to the movie. The initial sex scene was one of the best I've ever seen. It takes place in real time from the two of them making out on the couch to him putting on the condom to them going at it until they're done. What follows is a somewhat convoluted story about personal issues. It's still interesting enough to watch though. Laura Linney also has a beauty that I've never really noticed before this film.

308. Creation (✩✩✩) - DVD - A slightly fictionalized account of Charles Darwin as he came up with some new ideas about life in the face of a family and a society that believed in the bible. Stars Paul Bettany, Jennifer Connelly and Benedict Cumberbatch before he was famous. I didn't find the movie all that engaging, but I made it to the end. Same old religion versus science debate without anything too insightful, but parts of this argument were integrated into the film nicely through scenes showing us the process of life and nature.

309. The Tree of Life (✩✩✩½) - Blu-ray - This is a supremely bizzare movie. It's more of a moving art piece than a story that tells a cohesive narrative. It covers the discord of a family in the 1950s and the effect it has on an older present-day version of one of the kids in that family. These events are shown in the context of the creation of the universe, the galaxy, and life on Earth. We're supposed to think about this family's discord and how it relates to the state of grace. I think. It's a movie where you really have to pay attention and either think about what you're watching or just take it all in and try to see what comes. It reminded me of 2001 and The Fountain. And that's interesting because the fx guy who did 2001 also worked on the creation montage for this movie, as did the company that worked on The Fountain. Stars Brad Pitt, Sean Penn and Jessica Chastain. She got a lot of buzz last year. This is the first time I saw her in anything. I think. I thought of giving this movie a "Not Rated" score, because it really is hard to grade, but I think I'll go with something middling to decent just for the effects and the voice-over at the beginning that set up the movie's subject matter even if the resulting piece lacked clarity. I looked up the movie at the IMDb and saw a thread called "Where can I get the 6 hour director's cut?" I laughed out loud when I saw that. :lol:

Got in from work last night, watched a Kevin Pollack stand up special from 2010. I especially liked the Alan Arkin stories in it.

Followed that up with Goon, the hockey comedy starrin' Sean William Scott & Liev Schreiber. It was alright, not great...but I missed it when it was playin' in theaters earlier this year.

And now I'm watchin' the Conan remake before I have to go to work tonight.

Brave - Blu Ray - I really wanted to love this movie more then I did, unfortunately for me it was a let down. While I think the movie started strong, it got really muddled in the middle, but the end almost saves it. The movie is breath taking to behold, the textures and details are so rich and vibrant. I loved listening to Scottish accents, except Billy Connolly, there are other Scottish actors they could have used, his schtick is getting old. He's like the Scottish Robin Williams.

129. Astérix et Obélix: Au service de sa Majesté

Overall an enjoyable film, definitely better than the last one. I didn't care much for Astérix having a midlife crisis and they again tried to combine several books without really connecting their stories, but otherwise a lot of fun.

Another Audrey Hepburn feature, in vibrant technicolour this time. The technicolour is the best part, really. Funny Face contrasts poorly with the earlier projects of all involved, notably Hepburn and director Stanley Donen. The film practically orgasms with colour location footage from Paris, akin to what William Wyler did with Roman Holiday, but it's not used anywhere near as well. There's no chemistry between Hepburn and Fred Astaire, who's about twice her age and looks it (despite his admittedly still fancy footwork), and it's hard to overlook the condescending sexist element in their interactions. It's not without strengths: Hepburn is winning as ever, there's a decent amount of good humour and beautiful imagery, and Donen knows how to choreograph a dance number (although they're sadly unsupported by memorable music).

La Haine: The worst thing that can be said about this film is that it brought Mathieu Kassovitz to Hollywood's attention. Unlike the two awful films he directed for Hollywood studios, however, this film is masterful. Great direction, script, performances, camerawork, and editing.

Throw Mama From the Train: A passable comedic version of Strangers on a Train. Danny Devito's man-child character is probably the draw here; Billy Crystal is mostly just there. A pre-Star Trek Kate Mulgrew is good as his horrible ex-wife, though.

Horrible Bosses: For my money, this is still a very funny movie, and a better comedic take on Strangers on a Train than the above film. The extended version is nothing but improvised padding, though -- I'll stick with the theatrical version whenever I decide to revisit this.

Skyfall: It's a shame all the praise of this movie has taken the form of dog-piling on Daniel Craig's previous two Bond films. This is a very satisfying action movie, with a terrific climax, but I still prefer Craig's debut, and am disappointed that the Quantum plot line was dropped from those earlier films. The film also represents a bit of a return to formula; the villains plans in Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace were over-the-top, but believable. Here, Javier Bardem is a solid villain but his threat of cyber-terrorism is pure fantasy (apparently, everything -- from cell doors to heating units -- is hooked up to the MI6 computer).

Went up to a different theater from there to see The Sessions. I thought the movie was alright, but a bit too clinical...? I dunno...the whole story seemed kinda detached to me. It wasn't necessarily bad, but not really something I would watch again, either.

Great addition to the franchise. It finally feels like a cinematic James Bond film with Daniel Craig. I placed more thoughts on it in the discussion thread.

Found it on Netflix Instant tonight, decided to watch it. 'cause why not, right?

Dear god, that was a bad movie, even by early '80s standards.

Watchin' the Footloose remake now...not sure why. Nothin' about it so far can hold a candle to the Kevin Bacon original.

William Friedkin has had a very odd directorial career. With a few films of buildup in the late 60s, he won Best Director in 1971 for The French Connection, followed that up with The Exorcist, since then has done a variety of mediocre studio movies and fiercely uncommercial endeavours. Here, we've got an NC-17 (18A, in Canada) black comedy about one of the most irredeemable collections of people I've ever seen, featuring terrific work from Matthew McConaughey as the psycho title character.

Though through the screening I attended, I was distracted by the presence of a 70something woman, who, on leaving the theatre when the movie was over, remarked "I didn't know it was gonna be like that", which just raises the question of what she thought the movie was like.

Indo-Canadian director Deepa Metha adapts Sir Salman Rushdie's Booker-winning novel (with Rushdie working on the screenplay and providing narration). It's okay, but I think that the things that really make Rushdie's books stand out (his prose style, especially) don't translate well to film.

310. The Seeker: The Dark is Rising (✩½) - Live TV - A kid is the chosen one and must save the day from ancient dark forces or some-such. It's a terrible movie. Ian McShane is in it but I only decided to check it out because of Amelia Warner. I wish she was in more stuff. Turns out she was never legally married to Colin Farrell. At least that's what I read. Nothing to do with the movie, I just thought that was more interesting.

311. Astro Boy (✩✩✩✩) - Blu-ray - Saw this recent CGI motion picture that was based on the anime. As I was watching, the animation was so crisp that I thought for the first time that Astro Boy could work as a live action project without knowing that it was in fact intended to be a live-action film in the initial stages of planning. Anyway, I loved the voice work from big names like Nicolas Cage, Charlize Theron, Bill Nighy, Eugene Levy and Donald Sutherland. The story was also a pretty good one. It dealt with issues such as elitism and class. It also had some political undertones that apparently angered people (negative "red"energy vs positive "blue" energy).

312. Source Code (✩✩✩✩) - DVD - I don't want to say too much because so much unfolds from the get-go, but I thought this was a pretty good thriller with some intriguing scifi elements. If you're a scifi fan and you haven't seen this one, it's worth a look. It stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Michelle Monaghan, Jeffrey Wright and Vera Farmiga, and it's a mix of Quantum Leap and the TNG episode "Cause & Effect".

130. Skyfall

Well, it was beautifully shot (especially the ending) and Bardem was fun to watch most of the time, but otherwise I thought it was just a good film (admittedly, I'm not a big fan of the Bond films in general).
