Che: I've been struggling to figure out why I didn't like this biopic more than I did. It has an excellent cast, and like all of Steven Soderbergh's work it is well edited, directed, and photographed, but the film is missing something. Despite spending more most of the four hour plus running time with the title character, we never get a great deal of personal insight into Che Guevara as a human being. We know he has a family and friends, but that's rarely dramatized. What we're left with is Che's revolutionary struggle, which is probably more fascinating in the second half, which is dedicated to his activities in Bolivia (where it fails) than in the first half, which deals with the successful Cuban revolution.

Honestly, I think the film would have been more interesting if it took a long hard look at Che's life that takes place between the end of the Cuban revolution and his arrival in Boliva -- the intermission between the two parts, essentially. The film makes passing reference to his conflicts with Fidel Castro, and his failed attempts to start revolutions elsewhere before Bolivia, but for any detail the only refuge to be found is the audio commentary (which, from what I've heard so far, is fascinating, and another triumph for Criterion).

Watched the unrated cut of Reno 911!: Miami on DVD the other night. Pretty funny, though its almost exactly like the show with a slightly larger budget, more nudity & curse words. The DVD includes a "lost" version, which I may watch later...

Went to the theater last night to see Bedevilled, a Korean revenge story. It was actually a pretty good. And it was easier to stomach than the only other Korean revenge flick I've ever seen, Oldboy.

Got a plan to see The Revenant, a zombie movie, tonight.

Spin: An interesting video project entirely composed of footage culled from raw satellite feeds recorded during the 1992 election (in which the participants are often unaware that they're being recorded). The impact is probably a bit less than when this was originally released in 1995; since that point, several of the most damning clips (Dan Rather saying "they all look alike" and asking when Ramadan is, etc.) have been included elsewhere. Still, plenty of this is particularly damaging, and it gives an excellent look into how managed media appearances of politicians are (when they're smart enough not to go off script), as well as the power of the media in establishing a narrative (the total exclusion of Larry Agran is appalling).

My Dinner with André: Endlessly parodied since its release in 1981, this is a nice and quiet little film that revolves around nothing more than the dinner conversation of two men (Wallace Shawn and André Gregory, playing fictionalized versions of themsevles). I don't think it's a masterful piece of cinema, but it's a good film that's worth seeing.

This one was mostly boring with only a few funny moments. I remember liking the last one with the dinosaurs, but here it felt as if they were just running on auto-pilot.

Went to see The Revenant with my buddy James the other night. One of my co-workers, Robert, showed up, too.

Pretty dumb zombie movie about a soldier killed overseas that comes back as a zombie and gets helped by his stoner buddy.

At least it was free...

Saw the x-rated trailer for The ABC's of Death...felt a little sick after.

100. Jaws (A)

I've never watched this before, largely because sharks are a particular phobia of mine, so it never made it high on my priorities list despite all the praise it gets. It turns out that the actual mechanical shark is so fake looking that it wasn't that big an issue (apart from the bits where they use an actual shark). People tend to talk about the film's influence on blockbusters, but the opening one imagines also helped generate the modern horror formula. And thankfully, in the end, the member of the trio most deserving of death due to stupidity is the one who bites it.

I saw this for the first time recently as well and I didn't find it all that scary. I want to say that I'm surprised at how iconic it is because I wasn't on the edge of my seat, but I can accept that it was a groundbreaking film in its day.

235. The Losers: (✩✩✩½) - DVD - After being used to kill a drug lord, a special ops team fakes their death. Months later, they're hired by a mysterious woman and offered a chance to kill "Max", the man who set them up. Stars Zoe Saldana, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Chris Evans and Idris Elba and it's based on a 32-issue comic book series that ran from 2003 to 2006. I'd like to read it when I get the chance. Looks like the movie was set up for a sequel, but given that it bombed, that's not likely to happen. The movie itself isn't the best story-wise, but it's high on style and a lot of fun to watch because it has a slightly comedic tone. And Max, the villain played by Jason Patric , was a hoot to watch. He played the cartoonish bad guy to perfection.

236. Bangkok Dangerous: (✩✩✩½) - DVD - A hitman who wants to get out of the business goes to Bangkok for one last round of hits before quitting. Stars Nicholas Cage. I enjoyed the movie quite a bit. It made Bangkok a dangerous and lively place, and I liked the voiceover that offered insight into how to be a meticulous hitman. The movie does slip into a formula and things kind of fell apart at the end though. I read that this movie is a remake of a 1999 movie of the same name and by the same directors. If I get the chance, I may check it out.

237. The Pleasure Drivers: (✩✩½) - DVD - Don't ask me what this movie is about. It's a little weird. A woman kidnaps a guy and takes him out to a motel in the desert while a college professor leaves his cheating wife and tries to hook up with a young nympho. ...in a desert motel. Stars Angus Macfadyen, Lacey Chabert, Lauren Holly and Billy Zane. I got this one after seeing the clip in the Lacey Chabert BOTW thread. It's not a good movie but I loved Chabert's sexualized character.

238. The Butterfly Effect 2: (✩✩✩) - DVD - The sequel to the Ashton Kutcher movie. It has a different character who can do the same time travel thing. I can't compare this with the first one since I haven't seen it since it came out, but I liked this sequel well enough. It's slow and a bit boring at first, but at least it's got Erica Durance to get you though that first bit. After the first half-hour, it starts to pick up.

239. D.E.B.S.: (✩✩✩) - DVD - According to the IMDb, D.E.B.S. stands for "Discapline Energy Beauty Strength". It's about four plaid-skirted school girls who are actually secret agents in the D.E.B.S. program. Their assignment is to spy on the elusive super villain Lucy Diamond, but things take a turn when one of them runs into her and they fall in love. I got this one mainly because of Jordana Brewster. It's campy but entertaining.

240. Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde: (✩✩✩) - Live TV - Saw this 1941 movie on TCM last night. You can read some further discussion here. It had a good hook at the beginning with a dinner discussion on evil and the soul, but the movie itself was slow and plodding.

241. Prozac Nation: (✩✩✩) - DVD - A Harvard girl suffers from depression as she deals with personal issues involving her mother who feels like she's sacrificed everything and a father who wasn't around. Stars Christina Ricci, Michelle Williams and Jessica Lange. Nicholas Campbell of Da Vinci's Inquest plays the father. It's based on the best selling book Prozac Nation, which is about the life of its author Elizabeth Wurtzel. I heard about this movie before, but sort of dismissed it. Then, last week, I looked up Wurtzel after reading a thread in the TNZ and saw that she authored a book that became this movie. Wurtzel is a fascinating woman. She's in her 40s and she's afraid of getting old. You can find her columns online. The movie isn't earth-shattering, but I'm glad I saw it.

242. Thunderbirds Are Go: (✩✩✩½) - Live TV - International Rescue uses its formidable team of Thunderbird vehicles to make sure a second attempt at a Mars mission isn't sabotaged like the first one was. Filmed in Supermarionation™. I didn't think I'd like a puppet movie, but it was surprisingly well done.

243. Fail-Safe: (✩✩✩½) - Live TV - During the Cold War, a bomber is accidentally given the order to drop a nuke on Moscow and Strategic Air Command can't stop them. Stars Henry Fonda, Walter Matthau and Larry Hagman. It's a very talky movie that takes place entirely on the ground, but it's got some good stuff about the dangers and responsibilities of having nuclear weapons. Then there's an ending that leaves you going wow! In reading more on the movie, I saw that a version was made for TV in 2000 with an all-star cast including George Clooney, Sam Elliott, Richard Dreyfuss, Don Cheatle, Walter Kronkite, James Cromwell, Brian Dennehy, Hank Azaria andd Noah Wyle. I immediately added it to my zip list.

244. Robin Hood: (✩✩✩½) - Live TV - Yet another retelling of Robin Hood. Stars Russell Crowe. Before watching this, I lamented the fact that this wasn't the proposed "Nottingham", a movie that would have been the story of Robin Hood as told from the sheriff's perspective. Too bad they chickened out and decided to go with this, I thought. Then last night, I grudgingly decided to check this out and liked it. It's the kind of movie you want to turn off half an hour in, but if you stick with it, it gets better. That happened around the one-hour mark (on TV with commercials that is). It also looked like this was set up for a sequel, something I actually wouldn't mind seeing. On a side note, Russell Crowe and his costars appeared in an episode of the Canadian series Republic of Doyle earlier this year, so it was fun to see them in this movie.

Decided goin' into downtown Austin durin' a holiday weekend on the night of UT football's home opener may not have been the best idea, so the first "new to me" movie of the month was The Ambassador after I got off from work last night.

Pretty good documentary about a Danish journalist who goes to the Central African Republic as a Liberian diplomat in an effort to secure blood/conflict diamonds.

I was hopin' for a bit more to the story, but I guess ya can't film everything...

The Liam Neeson film where it seems someone is trying usurp his identity. Everyone seems in on the ruse. I figured it out about mid way. It still gets point for acting and execution but I wasn't overly excited about the movie. Glad I saw it but not one I'd own. Neeson doesn't really get to be a badass, the kind you saw in Taken, until after the reveal of what's really going on till near the end of the second act.

Haven't had much time for filmgoing in the last week or so, what with moving to Kingston for school.

Prohibition drama set in the rural South, which is a bit of a novelty compared to most gangster films from the era. It's basically pulp storytelling, with lots of blood and nudity (and very thick, occasionally incomprehensible accents). Shia LaBoeuf is actually pretty decent (it helps his character is meant to be a milquetoast), though he has a pretty severe case of retaining too much of his boyish looks well into adulthood (particularly pronounced in the epilogue). Tom Hardy is better, Guy Pearce is a lot of fun as the villain (since it's an R-rated film, he gets to be really bad), and there's a bunch of other people who frequently aren't used to their potential. Mia Wasikowska as LaBoeuf's love interest, in particular, has a severe case of "why are you in this movie?"; Jessica Chastain as Hardy's has a bit more of a role (and looks good naked), but it's not very demanding either. It's a perfectly fun diversion, but not anything more.

Pulled a nine hour shift at work today, and then got my movie ticket afterward. Went to see Lawless, since its the only thing showin' I hadn't seen at my theater...

It was better than I thought it would be, that's for sure.

And Tom Hardy was all kinds of awesome in it.

Cool, I've been chipping away at it on my free time when I'm not at work or watching other shows. I got a couple days off so I should be able to finish another chunk of episodes.

Two weeks ago I attended a special screening of the original Total Recall at the Egyptian Theater in Hollywood. Paul Verhoven and the two screenwriters were there as well for a Q&A afterward. The print was in 70mm and had been screened maybe once or twice. It was pristine. Marvelous time all around. The best quote of the night was when someone asked if anyone from the remake had consulted Verhoven on it, to which his reply was "They did not ask me anything, so I have no problem saying that I think our movie is good... and theirs is not."

This morning we watched Sin City, which wound up being rather ironic given the news of Michael Clarke Duncan's passing today; after dinner I watched the Spike Lee joint Inside Man, which is still awesome six years later.

104. The Rules of the Game (B+)

One of the highest-regarded films of Jean Renoir, and an acclaimed film in general (the only film to appear in all seven Sight & Sound top tens, having reached as high as the #2 position), it's...perfectly fine. Well-acted and amusing, and one can see that its cinematography would have been quite an advance in 1939, but its satire, considered savagely biting at the time, is pretty old-hat now, and that lessens its impact.
