Revisiting this, one of the major surprises of last summer, my assessment is pretty much the same: it's a very good, intelligent movie, but a couple of issues keep it from being truly great as a whole. The human characters aren't nearly as compelling as the apes (apart from John Lithgow's superb turn), for starters, but that wouldn't be a big deal if the whole James Franco/David Oyelowo dynamic that the movie sets up doesn't make sense. You can nitpick various points of scientific procedure (as people have been doing extensively in their evaluations of Prometheus), but I can overlook little things like that for a compelling central theme, which is pretty normal in movies -- but the movie invests a lot in the idea that David Oyelowo's greed leads to the downfall of humanity, and...that's not true, at all. Everything bad that happens in the movie happens because of James Franco's actions, and the movie doesn't seem to realize that. All the same, the rest is quite thematically potent (it's a very effective update of Frankenstein, among other things), with phenomenal effects (it's funny that I'm a big fan of Hugo, but it definitely won two Oscars that belonged to movies that I overall rank lower than it).

Overall the Focker saga stayed fairly strong. By this third film though I had tired of the Kevin(Owen Wilson) character. He wasn't just the ex who was still friends with Pam and the Byrnes family, he clearly still had feelings for Pam. That back tattoo would've been the last straw if I was Gaylord.
You just knew from the moment Jessica Alba was seen on screen she was the temptress meant to test the marriage. So her scene of stripping down to her bare essentials and jumping all over Gaylord was no surprise. Although it was a good scene!
Good to see Laura Dern back in a film. I always wanted her to have her "solo" lead in a Jurassic Park film since it seemed the 2 sequels did that with the male leads.

Got together with my buddy Trevor to see the latest movie written & directed by Bobcat Golthwaite and starrin' Joel Murray.

Murray is Frank - divorced, recently unemployed and diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor, he decides with nothin' more to lose, its time to clean up society since he views reality tv, news and other media as a sign that American civilization is in decline.

Aided in this is sixteen year old Roxie, who witnesses Frank's first murder and helps him see he's on the right track.

Several good monologues in the movie, and I totally agree with Frank's character - its time for some mean motherfuckers to die for the betterment of the world.

Got a plan to see Prometheus 3D this afternoon with my friend K/C. Lookin' forward to that one!

Well, I enjoyed it, and so did K/C. Nice use of 3D, too, especially durin' the scene with David on the Engineer bridge.

I'll be goin' to see it again, too, since I have other friends who want to check it out & I can get in for free.

Whit Stillman returns to the screen after a Malick-level hiatus (14 years since The Last Days of Disco), and the result is an aggressively quirky comedy about a group of snobby do-gooder college girls. I'm still unsure if this is an absurdist masterpiece in the A-range or a very solid B-range comedy that lacks a certain something necessary to rank higher. The pace never flags, at a minimum, which is a virtue in a comedy. Provisionally I'll call it a B+. It's headlined by Analeigh Tipton, who the IMDb tells me was a contestant on America's Next Top Model, but between this is and her lovely work in Crazy Stupid Love is carving out a niche playing endearingly awkward girls; and Greta Gerwig, in a performance of epic deadpanness. This is also the first time in a while I've seen Adam Brody in anything.

173. Prometheus: (✩✩✩✩) - Theatre - I thought the movie was visually stunning and good scifi overall. My high grade is for the enjoyment factor.

How to Make Love to a Woman: (✩✩✩✩) - Internet - A guy is having trouble bringing his girlfriend to orgasm and over the course of the movie, he ends up getting advice, both wanted and unwanted from friends, family and even strangers who overhear his conversations. The movie also gets a little serious towards the end as his trouble reveals other problems with their relationship. This independednt movie stars Josh Myers and one of my favorite raven-haired beauties Krysten Ritter. Also putting in appearances are Ian Somerhalder, Ken Jeong, Jenna Jameson and James Hong. I found it to be a pretty good sex comedy. It wasn't stupid and didn't bore me.

175. Good Dick: (✩✩✩✩) - DVD - A guy who works in a video store tries to meet and pursue a relationship with a young woman who rents porn there. It's an independent movie written by, directed by, and starring Marianna Palka. Palka's boyfriend Jason Ritter plays the guy. I thought it was very good. Very raw and real. I was fully engaged, wanting to see this relationship progress and hoping to get some insight or answers concerning this young woman's odd behavior. Once you see the movie, the title will make more sense. Also, there was a redhead who appeared for a few seconds in the video store. I thought she looked like Bryce Dallas Howard, and sure enough, it was her. Apparently she and Palka are friends.

Way back in the mid 90's I bought this on VHS as part of a Halloween lot from Columbia Home Video. Never watched it though. I wanted Michael Meyers.
Had this movie been called anything else but Halloween III it would probably get more recognition. From what I know they wanted the Halloween saga to be an anthology series and this was the first go at that. Must not have done well cause for pt.4 they returned to Meyer.

As a movie itself and for it's era I found it to be a good scary, suspense flick. It stars the man from John Carpenters Fog and his ex-wife was played by the gal who was Lori Strode's friend in the first film. It's about an Irish Druid Cult trying to harness the power of Samhain. Samhain is the only thematical tie to the other films as Meyers was said to be a follower by Dr.Loomis. A couple other subtle nods to the first film also. The film ends and you really don't know the conclusion. But I did like it and if you're a fan of this era's horror films give it a try.

176. Gojira: (✩✩✩✩) - Live TV - Also known as Godzilla. This is the original movie that started it all. It was in black and white and had subtitles. It was also surprisingly good. I expected a dumb cheesy action movie, but this thing actually had a story and a relevant message about the dangers of nuclear technology. I'm glad I finally saw it.

177. Rodan: (✩✩½) - Live TV - Another introductory film for another monster. This time, it's about the "rodan", a flying pterodactyl-like creature that terrorizes the skies, and there are two of them. It's not as substantial as Gojira, but it was good to see.

178. Mothra: (✩✩✩) - Live TV - Yet another introductory film. This time, it centered around Mothra. This movie is more fanciful than the others. It deals with two 12-inch tall women having been captured by an expedition party to an island, with their deity Mothra, a giant moth, having to come to civilization to rescue them. It was pretty weird, but again, I can say that I finally saw it.

Men in Black 3

I really had fun watching this movie. A lot of people are saying how unnecessary this movie was, but it's your typical summer film and a film that I thought had a lot of heart. Brolin did a fantastic job playing young K, and I really liked Emma Thompson as O. Also, the end scenes (probably the last 20 minutes of the movie) were really touching, even if it was a little predictable.

Prometheus

The more I think about this movie the more I didn't like it. Visually, it was a great film, but in terms of character and narrative development, I found this movie to be kind of a mess. These characters did stupid things, some of the actions were not very well explained, and it just was kind of a dull movie. I kept thinking about how great Alien and Aliens were, and that this was a prequel, but it doesn't even compare with those two movies. This was was more on the level of Alien Resurrection, and that was a bit unfortunate.

Another of the classic 70s paranoia thrillers. It's less consistently atmospheric than The Conversation, but I'd rate it higher on the strength of the narrative (it's only decent most of the way through, but it has a great ending). From the unexpected detente with Max von Sydow's character to the moody, ambiguous ending, it's superb. The preceding film isn't bad, either, and has a lot of interesting old-fashioned espionage details, but it's not standout.

Winters Bone: It was a good film. I seem to recall lots of hype about it though back upon it's release. Was that cause of expectations on a then relative unknown Jennifer Lawrence or it was Peter Jackson's first big movie post LOTR? Both? I did enjoy it and at times it felt more like a documentary on poor white mountain trash or human interest drama about a down on their luck family.

Battleship: If this movie were called Naval Combat and had no expectations to feeling tied to a Board Game it would have maybe been received better? There is only one 15min sequence in the film that resembles the board game, beyond that it's just an alien invasion film. No glaring plot holes. It's actually an enjoyable summer popcorn action flick.

Much Ado About Nothing: The early 90's Kenneth Brangh adaptaion. A coworker was going to throw it away after not getting anything for it at a second hand retailer so she gave it to me when I mentioned I hadn't seen it. That I could recall. It's decent. It was more fun seeing the introduction of Kate Beckinsale and a post-Batman Michael Keaton than anything.

Picked up a couple of double packs from Fry's Electronics a bit ago, opened the first one up the other day, and started to watch Cursed. Written by Kevin Williamson, directed by Wes Craven, and starrin' Christina Ricci, Jesse Eisenberg & Joshua Jackson.

It took me three tries to finish it, 'cause I could only handle the awful a half hour at a time.

Terrible freakin' movie.

But, hey, for five bucks (or $2.50, since there's another movie on the DVD), I shouldn't expect too much, right?

And its confirmed - I have free advance screenin' passes for both Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter and Brave. YAY!

The Sting -- I was lucky enough to see a restored print of this film last night, and minus one or two details, it really holds up. The best part is probably Paul Newman's totally irreverent performance, but Robert Redford, Robert Shaw, and the piles of character actors in supporting roles are also good. The only thing that really doesn't quite work plot-wise is a twist involving Redford's love interest, but it's such a minor note that it doesn't bring the movie down very far. The other odd thing is the very 1970s use of zooms, which undercuts the nostalgic, Saturday Evening Post cover look of mots of the movie, but it only happens a few times, so it's not a huge deal.

This print is going around the country as part of a 100 years retrospective of Universal Pictures. It looks terrific, so if the series makes a stop near you, it's worth seeing.

I vaguely recall watching that movie one time on TV with my father. Since it's being released on Blu-ray/DVD now, I've been meaning to check it out again.
