Incidentally, Gong Li was not in Hero. You may be thinking of Maggie Cheung. Hero's director, Zhang Yimou, had once been Gong Li's lover; but until Curse of the Golden Flower (2006) he hadn't worked with her since Shanghai Triad (1994). And 2046? All kinds of brilliance. One of my favourite films of this decade; it's worth a look, but it's kind of a sequel to In the Mood for Love and a summation of Wong Kar-wai's career to date so it might be an acquired taste.
