Julian Bashir. Not only did the actor get a lot better but the character also grew more interesting and watchable as the show went on.

I hated Bashir in the first season and a half. He improved so much since.

I almost said O'brian though. Loved OBrian on DS9

I voted for Jake, not because he's my favorite on this list (though I do like him a lot) but because I think he doesn't get a fair shake, either by the show - I was so annoyed that he all but disappeared in the final chapter - or by fandom.

I voted for Quark. He gets items (legal and illegal) without anyone knowing, he's been the ex machina on multiple occasions, and he is a key player amongst Ferengi (opening trade with the Delta Quadrant regardless of the Negas not giving him much credit for it).

I opted for Jake, mainly because he wasn't really used to his full potential, that of just a normal teenager/young man.

Even though he earns many plaudits for his acting, I still think that Auberjonois (and by extension, Odo) does not get his due.

Jake gets the short end of the stick alright. You can get the character to do alot as a youngster but what do you get the guy to do when he's older?

100% understand the decision for him not to go into Starfleet. It's a bit old-hat that everyone has to get into Starfleet. OK, we'll make him a journalist! I like that move in principle. But the problem with that is that there's only little evidence that there's any kind of developed media in DS9 or an type of mass engagement with media at all.

So the vibe coming from Jake is that he's slouching around with a personal hobby. One exception is that episode with Bashir where he's under attack from the Klingons and he has to confront and deal with issues of war and so on. But generally they kind of wrote Jake into a corner. You'd have to explore an actual Federation news room to bring that character to life and make him an adult with purpose. But with such a big cast it's lucky he got the episodes he did I suppose.

Worf for me. After an initial settling in period for me Worf was DS9. He worked well, they integrated him well and at times I forget that he's the same character as the bland Worf of TNG.

It was good to see a human character who didn't want to join Starfleet. The problem is the whole writer/journalist angle was largely irrelevant and that's basically what Jake became. If he'd shown interest in a career that would draw him into the main plotlines he might have been a more integral character. Maybe he should have worked at Quark's. There was never any shortage of material for Quark as he got to interact with every main character all the time with the possible exception of Ben Sisko.

Clearly, we need to see more of the Federation News Service in subsequent productions.

I said Ben Sisko. I found him bland as wallpaper in the beginning. But over the course of the series, I see many aspects to the character that the other captains lacked. Sisko divided as Starfleet officer and father with Jake. Sisko divided as Starfleet officer and husband with Kassidy. Sisko divided as Starfleet commanding officer and friend with his old mentor friend Dax (especially when he laid down the law with Ezri not belonging on the station when she was afraid to work with Worf), Sisko divided between being a Starfleet officer and being the Emissary. Lots of internal conflict (like Spock) that lends itself to drama well.

I'm picking Ezri. Mainly as I think the rest of them all had their fanfare, whilst Ezri was a last minute fix with a lot of unexplored potential due to only being in that one final season.

She was a breath of fresh air in terms of character, someone who wasn't a brave hero or all out soldier ready to fight (even Nog was waving his rifle aorund like a mad man!) but somoene who needed time to grow up. ST kind of missed out the type of people who would rather go hide in a corner than confront, so even though there wasn't much room to grow for her - it was at last a different direction.

Tough not to like Quark.
I don't.

Also voted for Ezri, the actress gave her a lot of personality and made her significantly different from Jadzia, but one season just wasn't enough for her to fully develop the character. I'd have liked to have seen more of her, maybe on board the Ent-E in Nemesis as Troi's replacement counselor?

I actually think too much time was spent on Ezri. It was the last season but the first half of it was Ezri, Ezri, Ezri. Quark was severely underused in that season.

I picked O'Brien because he ended up being one of the only normal human characters on the show by the end. He was sort of an everyman and I just really liked his character. I almost went with Ezri though. She had very little time to develop her as a character but I thought that the writers did a very good job with her even if they did go overboard a bit.
