He was kind of arrogant in the early seasons. Maybe that was the point, but it bordered on being annoying.I see a lot of reviewers talk smack about Bashir, but I never saw what the problem was.
Valid point. He's also the franchise's only Augment cast member. Does that mean the Augments just can't help it?He was kind of arrogant in the early seasons. Maybe that was the point, but it bordered on being annoying.
Jake gets the short end of the stick alright. You can get the character to do alot as a youngster but what do you get the guy to do when he's older?
100% understand the decision for him not to go into Starfleet. It's a bit old-hat that everyone has to get into Starfleet. OK, we'll make him a journalist! I like that move in principle. But the problem with that is that there's only little evidence that there's any kind of developed media in DS9 or an type of mass engagement with media at all.
So the vibe coming from Jake is that he's slouching around with a personal hobby. One exception is that episode with Bashir where he's under attack from the Klingons and he has to confront and deal with issues of war and so on. But generally they kind of wrote Jake into a corner. You'd have to explore an actual Federation news room to bring that character to life and make him an adult with purpose. But with such a big cast it's lucky he got the episodes he did I suppose.
Clearly, we need to see more of the Federation News Service in subsequent productions. It was good to see a human character who didn't want to join Starfleet. The problem is the whole writer/journalist angle was largely irrelevant and that's basically what Jake became. If he'd shown interest in a career that would draw him into the main plotlines he might have been a more integral character. Maybe he should have worked at Quark's. There was never any shortage of material for Quark as he got to interact with every main character all the time with the possible exception of Ben Sisko.
I don't.Tough not to like Quark.
