Most ridiculous thing about TOS

I'm sure GR fought them both real hard on this issue.
Yes, I'm sure he wrestled with both of them long and hard on the issue (on his casting couch of course.);)

[Yes, I went there, but people who know the history of GR know too it's probably not far from the truth.]

He's also got a rather liberal take on sex in general. His original ideas for TMP-era Earth culture are a bit out there.

Justman/Solow (if I recall) reported that GR would personally inspect women's costumes and often order the hemline shortened, to the dismay of William Ware Theiss.

My issue with women in uniform trousers is that they weren't flattering. What they needed was properly designed and fitted slacks made of good-looking material. The women's uniform pants we got in early S1 were generally unflattering as hell.

:D
They're definitely fun to look at, but they're still ridiculous military uniforms.
It'd be even more fun to look at if the official female uniform was shoes and a smile, but it'd be that much more ridiculous, too. :D

Right, in a climate controlled environment you could skip the shoes.

Ok if you watch tos episodes in a row you will def. See the miniskirts. When i was a kid in the 80s it sure got my attention and made me pay more attention to the actresses and even respect them. Now im older but the miniskirts still grab my attention and respect all at the same time.

Besides miniskirts, it got to the point in tos that pretty much anyone could take over the ship. Hippies? ! How about the crew letting complete strangers just roam the ship freely without any escort? Bad security if you ask me.

I thought the female uniform trousers for TOS were fine...

... but I liked the wider selection of uniforms that Theiss design for the Star Trek II television series that expanded on the original uniforms (some of which have been used by New Voyages).

How have I missed the standard uniforms for women on TOS! I suppose the miniskirts are distracting.

It looks perfectly flattering to me.

Wow - new one on me as I didn't recall the show having female 'crewmember' cast wearing pants past the first two pilots. Yet they obviously did.

Mainly extras, and the crewwoman Charlie Evans turned into an old woman (didn't want to show the latter in a mini no doubt).

When I look at those trouser variants for women I'm always left thinking what could be done to make them work better.

- Possibly lengthen the hemline to fall more on the hips.
- Design a better neck opening, possibly making it more like the men's tunic.
- Tone down some of the elaborate hair styles.

I think it might not have occured to them to go the route the spin-offs followed where the unforms were essentially unisex in design except for tailoring dependennt on the male or female body form. We can assume that in the 23rd/24th centuries it's easy to produce clothing tailored specifically for each individual's distinct form as opposed to having to wear approximate sizes off-the-rack.

Seeing a mix of both skirt and trouser variants for women would have looked cool.

I wonder how the actresses felt when, in later years, fans leveled criticism at the show for that particular fashion choice? They thought they were empowering but on down the road some fans thought them sexist, impractical or just silly.

Don't get me wrong. As costumes the minidresses looked good on them. As a uniform for a quasi military organization...put me in the silly camp

STAR TREK was not the first science fiction television show to have a miltiraristic uniform for its female crewmembers with a miniskirt. Both SPACE PATROL and ROCKY JONES, SPACE RANGERS did it before them.

I think the most ridiculous thing about TOS is that some people have a problem with short hemlines on a 50 year old TV show. Especially when its contemporaries had at least as many. Star Trek was not, is not, the future. It's entertainment that reflects the time in which it was made. Nothing more.

YMMV. :techman:
