Most powerful scene in TNG without dialogue.

Use of Time

Greetings, I thought I would introduce myself by attempting to initiate a new discussion.

What would you consider the most powerful/moving scene in TNG that did not involve dialogue.

I submit the final scene in the BOBW where Picard goes to sip his tea but lowers the cup and stares out the window. To me this was the first time where an episode didn't simply end with the Enterprise heading off to another adventure after wrapping up another situation. You knew things were not OK and that there was some real lasting damage done to Picard there. The scene was also shot beautifully and paired with a great score. This scene also served as a fantastic segue into "Family" which is one of my favorite episodes of the series.

What are some of yours?

Neat idea for a thread! :techman:

That scene from the end of "Best of Both Worlds, Part II" is really great, you are right. Another nice scene without any dialogue that comes to mind is the last scene from "The Inner Light", again with Picard standing in front of a window.

That's the one I immediately thought of. I'd have to think about others ...

I never thought of the Inner Light scene but that is a fantastic choice because it highlights a positive life changing occurance in Picard's life that contrasts with the negative life changing one in the ending of BOBW. Looking back, these might be the 2 most defining experiences for Picard other than his torture at the hands of the Cardassians.

Those are all good. I'll toss in another--
"Preemptive Strike", the final scene in the ready room after Picard learns of Ro's betrayal. He just sits there and...

I see that many of these powerful scenes without dialog involve Patrick Stewart. No surprise there.

Here's one more:

The last moments of "Sins of the Father", in which all the Klingons surrounding Worf on Qo'nos must turn away from him. Even without dialogue, and even to the most casual observer, I think it's very obvious there's a dramatic beat when Worf forces Kurn to do so as well.

Here's a good one...

At the end of "The Mind's Eye" when Troi is trying to help Geordi recover his memories. Yes, there is dialogue back and forth, but for the last 15-20 seconds or so, we get an extreme close up of Geordi desperately trying to recall the gaps in his memory. You can see the frustration on his face without him saying anything. Pretty powerful.

Of course BOBW pt. 2 is probably the most powerful out there, but "Sins" was excellent as well.

Maybe I'm broadening the thread too much, but in thinking about endings, I can't wait to see the end of "A Fistful of Datas" in HD.

The end of the the theft of the Enterprise from "10100101"--the expressions of the characters watching helplessly and effects matched by the amazing music just make it chilling!

I also second the end of "Conspiracy."

This is exactly the scene I first thought of when I saw the thread title but was yet to read your post.

I have to go with The Inner Light as well. But not just the final moment with him and his flute. Also, the five or ten seconds when he firsts wakes up and has to remember who and where he is, is the single-greatest 10 seconds of acting ever (IMHO.)

I actually like the scene from "Family", where Jack Crusher's holo-recording ends, and Wesley reaches out to touch his father, just as his image vanishes. The look on Wesley's face really conveyed the emotion of the moment well, IMO.

I like the scene were Picard immitated the Tamarian knife ritual thing in Darmok in homage to Captain Dathon. That whole epsidoe was awesome on so many levels.

I am going to go with the scene from "The Measure of a Man" where Riker is researching Data's specs and finds the information regarding his off switch - Riker's gamut of emotion as he goes from thinking about his case to thinking about his friend was pretty powerful.

I have to add my voice to those who said the end of "The Inner Light." The other suggestions are wonderful, as well, but seeing Picard, alone and the only sound we hear is him playing the flute, it was just a moment that I will remember forever.

First one that comes to mind for me is another scene from BOBW, where Picard is getting various Borg accessories attached to him, and a single tear can be see in his eye.

That scene is going to look fantastic in HD. :techman:

This may not quite count, and although there is some dialogue in it, the most powerful moment was when words weren't used at that moment. It comes at the end of Nemesis where Riker and Picard say their farewells. Right after they shake hands, they stand their just looking at each other. At that point you know that it's over. Also a powerful scene, was the look Data gave to LaForge right before he activated the force-field. Then LaForge nods his head and closes, then opens his eyes at Data...again...you knew it was all coming to and end. Two tear jerking moments for me during the TNG movie runs.
