Most popular/ recognised series - by region?

This kind of stems from another thread, but I've noticed in different countries the most popular Trek series is different.

In the US, and around the world, TOS seems the most 'marketed' followed by TNG with the others collectively behind

In the UK there is still a major nostalgia for the 90s shows, TNG being maybe the most popular I think but a lot of people talk about VGR when I mention Trek - in the LGBT community particularly whenever I mention Trek Janeway is mentioned everytime. Enterprise seems the most ignored show.

I'm wondering what people's take on this is, I know many of you are from different countries on here

Based on my exposure here in the US, I'd say the popularity of the series in terms of current status and how much they are talked about / remembered is:

I'm forced to agree with Vger23's assessment of the situation. By rights -- certainly in my view -- The Next Generation is the STAR TREK most worthy of remembrance. It's entertainment at its finest and a true testament to Gene Roddenberry's brilliance and showmanship. Alas, The Classic Series reigns supreme in American Pop Culture. But, then again, look at how popular Thomas Kinkade's paintings were and are -- and they're pure, unadulterated kitsch! The kind of artwork you'd expect on a Holiday Lottery Ticket. That's the masses, for you, though. No finesse ... no style.

I think TNG is very popular in the United States. I wouldn't know exactly how to rank all of them, but I would certainly think Voyager is more popular (in the general public) than DS9 or Enterprise.

I live in the US. My personal list falls into:

1. DS9
2. TNG
3. TOS
4. VOY
5. ENT

In my later years, I've come to enjoy the nostalgia of TOS more. So currently, I would rank TOS higher. In the era of when then shows were actually on TV, my ranking was as above though!

I always giggle when I look at the box office results for the movies here in Germany. TNG was waaaay more popular than TOS. You notice that when talking to people, too. The nostalgia for Picard...

Looked up some audience figures for the movies here in Germany:

Voyage Home: 0.5 million
Final Frontier: 0.2 million
Undiscovered Country: 0.5 million

Generations: 1.8 million
First Contact: 2.4 million
Insurrection: 2.4 million
Nemesis: 1.3 million

Star Trek: 1.3 million
Into Darkness: 1.5 million



Yes, Nemesis was as successful as ST09.

You put Enterprise higher than DS9/Voyager? I don't think I've met a person face to face who stayed with Ent longer than one or two seasons. It's almost universally loathed.

Hard to say between DS9/Voy. Among the geeky persuasion DS9 is more popular but the average American gets Voy more and remember DS9 for not caring about Quark stories.

I live in Toronto and TNG is the most popular among people I've met. Could be a generational thing. But I met a couple of people who were into DS9 and Enterprise.

My take on things here in the UK would be

The Next Generation made a name for itself airing at teatime on BBC 2 for years while TOS repeats were intermittent and tended to be Sunday mornings. The iconic imagery and characters of the original show makes me give it second place although I'd imagine the popularity of actually watching the show would be lower, maybe even one step above ENT. DS9 again benefited from a sweetheart timeslot in first run, which neither Voyager nor Enterprise ever had. I'd say ENT is pretty much unknown outside the fanbase.

In my part of the US, whenever I see merchandise having to do with Star Trek, it's overwhelmingly TOS-related. That speaks to the enduring, rightfully iconic status of Kirk, Spock, the original Enterprise, etc.

Oh, and there's TNG, too.

I find more casual viewers in the US who remember "the series where Scott Bakula was Captain" than anyone remembering anything to do with DS9 or Voyager. I'm not saying which series was most well-liked. I guess I equated "popular" with "remembered" which may have been a mistake.

From my experience, in the U.S. it depends on your generation. Born before 1980? TOS is the most popular. Born after 1980? TNG is the most popular. Then for both:

My perspective in the UK:

TNG
TOS
VGR
DS9

TNG ran Wednesdays on BBC2 from Sept 1990 - May 1992, then again from April 1994 through to summer 2002. In the later years, it often ran twice a week (with two-part episodes often shown as 'movie' versions).

From Sept 1992 into 2000, it also aired FIVE DAYS A WEEK for much of the year on Sky One. It was everywhere; it had mass appeal outside of hardcore fans... I think that these days many underestimate just how popular TNG was, and is today.

I think Voyager is more popular/recognised in the UK than DS9 for numerous reasons - it had a huge VHS launch, it came to the BBC quicker after its US start than the other series did (still 20 months, but TNG took three years!), it had similar popularity on Sky... for whatever reason, it just had more mainstream appeal here than DS9.

Enterprise was the one series not shown on the BBC - Channel 4 poached it (then proceeded to treat it terribly). One wonders if it had inherited the Wednesday at 18.00 on BBC2 slot from TNG, it may have been a little more well known...
