Which recent or comparatively recent Bond from the 90s and 00s do you think is overrated? The usual suspects are of course GoldenEye and Casino Royale, the former Martin Campbell film having an especially horribly bloated reputation amongst Bond fandom (especially in that loony bin, IMDb), no less boosted by the brilliant N64 game. It is a lie that it was Brosnan's best instalment, at least to me. I used to like at the time, but it really has deflated alot in the last 13 years.

GoldenEye had great cast members like Judi Dench, Sean Bean, Famke Janssen and Gottfried John, with a mostly excellent pre-title action sequence and iconic tank chase, GoldenEye had a scope not seen since the better Roger Moore movies in the late 70s and very early 80s. But the formulaic screenplay for GoldenEye is rather uninspired and nonsensical in the light of day, so it loses points in comparison to superficially more simplistic but internally more coherent instalments like Tomorrow Never Dies and Quantum of Solace (the latter two movies are 7.5/10, while GoldenEye scores 5.5/10). The soundtrack is dull and dated as well

The praise for Casino Royale is more generally warranted, and Martin Campbell had more to do with a vastly better screenplay, but it was not without some groaning faults (I give it 8/10).

GoldenEye is my pick. It was a good film, but Brosnan didn't seem to quite fit in the role just yet. He gave better performances in Tomorrow Never Dies and The World Is Not Enough.

TWINE because it's just so deathly dull. Lousy Bond girl, terrible henchman (really I expected better from Carlyle), not expecially exciting set pieces and a really lacklustre setting involving deserts and...well deserts...

Goldeneye is brilliant, two great Bond girls, great Bond, great villain, great henchmen/women, fantastic tank chase.

TND is a very solid and enjoyable Bond film, only let down by somewhat rubbish villains (aside from Dr Kauffman) The look of glee on Brosnan's face during the backseat driving bit is great, could never imagine Daniel Craig being that thrilled.

DAD I love it all the way up to the end on the plane. Seriously an invisible car I can deal with but Toby Stephens in a robot suit? Plus I wanted Rosmund Pike to kill Halle Berry. Is it ludicrous, obviously, is it still fun? IMO yes.

Casino Royale If it wasn't for TWINE I would have voted this. Good film, yes, but very over rated. It's too long, the plot is contrived and villain and the girl terrible. Luckily the presence of Daniel Craig makes up for all that, as do the best Bond titles ever!

QoS I'll let you know when I see it in about 48 hours.

Casino Royale. Bond movies are not supposed to have 90 minutes between action sequences, for a start.

^ Did you forget to vote? Mine seems to be the only vote recorded against Casino Royale so far.

Really enjoyed CR and QoS, the darker tone of the latest Bond is far closer to the novels than the previous incarnations have been.

Of those listed above, I'd pick Die Another Day. Didn't really do much for me.

What are we considering recent? Brosnan forward? Dalton? Well, I don't think any of the recent Bond movies are overrated. Goldeneye and Casino Royale deserve to stand with the best of the series. If anything I think that films like Licence to Kill, Tomorrow Never Dies, and The World is Not Enough are underrated. They don't deserve nearly the amount of hate they get. Die Another Day, though, deserves to be shredded to bits.

"Goldeneye" IMHO. It's ok, but I found TND to be far more entertaining.

Apart maybe from TND being underrated, I feel that most of the movies seem to get the appropriate responses. I haven't seen QoS yet, however. So I can't pass judgement on that just yet.

Goldeneye, I guess. Eric Sierra really takes it down a notch. Which isn't much to go on, but I had to vote for something.

Haven't seen Quantum of Solace yet. If anything, I think Tomorrow Never Dies is underrated, but that's not the question at hand. Honestly, I think the popular assessment of each film is about right.

Goldeneye now - it was great at the time, but has dated quite a bit, and the videogame actually makes more sense in filling in the plot holes!

"Tomorrow Never Dies" is overrated by its fans.

When the Bong Girl is as capabale as Bond then it detracts from Bond...plus they did that and still made her hostage at the end. Plus Terri Hatcher as a Bong girl...no. Just no.

GOLDENEYE is probably the most overrated, but it has Izabella Scorupco in it and she tastes like strawberries....so...

CR and GE easily take the crown. I had to vote for CR since I like more things in GE.

I'm stuck between TND and tWiNE. I don't mind either of them, but I thought that TND was considered pretty poor until I got into the Bond threads here and found it has quite a few fans - so maybe it isn't overrated anywhere but on this board. tWiNE is just boring, end of.

If one person on the planet likes Die Another Day, it's the most overrated Bond film, hands down.

It's not only a terrible Bond film, it's a terrible movie, period. It's Corman's Fantastic Four with a budget bad.

Casino Royale. It was good but lacked "something" but it was all in promise that I liked. It felt like a better, new, direction for Bond from where the Brosnan films went. But it was still a slow-moving movie and it didn't completely sell me on Craig as Bond.

Probably Casino Royale. I don't know, it seems the common thing is that Bond needs to be as close to possible to the books. While I can respect that, I also want Bond to be fun and for that, Casino Royale (While good) wasn't great. And I miss Q. :(

Die Another Day

I've heard some say it's just as good as the previous three Brosnan films, but for me it just goes too far over the top with the cliches. I'm glad Casino Royale shook up the franchise a bit.

CR, easily. I hate the Craig casting, I think they wrote Bond as a juvenile immature moron and it had NOTHING to do with the Fleming that I read (as opposed to Dalton's pics, who very much 'gets' that aspect.)

I don't know how TND or DAD could be overrated, considering most people are smart enough to consider them turds (TND almost utterly except for the score and the kd lang endsong, DAD for the last two-thirds.)
