Most obvious stunt doubles in trek

CGI can easily fix the stunt double differences these days, Kinda surprised they did not do they in TOS-R, probably to expensive.
Easily? Not so easy if you don't shoot reference images to map onto a CG head and then laboriously match move it to the footage.

I remember an episode of Family Guy talked about this. Neal Goldman (The geeky kid voiced by Seth Green) shows his class "Area" and mentions when Shatner is replaced by his stunt double, even showing his coffee cup in one shot :guffaw:.

Yeah, not to mention that it would suck.

I already know these aren't real people, they are characters. I don't need shatner's cgi mug pasted on his body to sell the idea to me. I like the fact that I can see the stunt doubles, it makes it slightly more interesting from a "behind the scenes" perspective, and has provided us with some humorous jokes over the years. A lot of the enjoyment I get from watching old shows is to see how things were done back then.

No need to george lucas it up.

Stunt doubles will be much more obvious in the TNG blu rays as well, and I hope they don't CGI them out. For example, data has always obviously NOT been brent spiner while tap dancing in data's day, and it will be fun to see it in hi-def now.

The most obvious for me is Kirk with his duplicate on the transporter pad. Painfully obvious they were different heights.

The least obvious was Sean Kinney as a stand-in Pike in The Menagerie. Not exactly stunt duty, but pretty darn convincing so it's worth noting.

Did any major ST actors do their own stunts ever?

I'm pretty sure Marina Sirtis insisted on doing more stunts at one point, which resulted in a broken tailbone. It's that episode where her, o'brien, and data are posessed by alien spirits or some such thing.

Not a major ST actor, but, Pat Tallman did appear in several small roles throughout the Series, and she most likely was given the roles, because they got a two for one, with her being an actual stunt woman

That would've been cool storywise if it was actually Mr. Leslie doing the driving -- doing his part to make sure the timeline was corrected.

Funny you should say that because I came very, very close to filming a dual-role fanfilm sequence in the 90s, which we intended to insert into that episode. The driver was to have been revealed as my Tellarite alter ego, Grol, with Therin of Andor in the passenger seat:

I think a lot of the obvious stunt men in TOS has to do with the filming style of the day. They'd often do the whole fight with stunt men as a master shot, and intercut it with close-ups of the real actors.

I often see them cutting to a long shot that isn't even "stunty", and therefore so much more obvious, but from an editorial standpoint they had no other coverage.

They had some great stunts in TOS that are completely perfect too, such as Scotty getting zapped by Apollo.

I think if they'd had time to do a "principal actors" master shot back in the day, a lot of the stunt work would have been more seamless.

I was watching Omega Glory yesterday (I don't know why), and it looked like the fights between Kirk and Tracy were mostly done by the actors! They showed their faces quite a lot. Granted it was some simple theatrical fisticuffs and a couple of falls onto soft bags of grain...

Watching the Blu-ray Encounter at Farpoint, Yar fighting in the court scene is hilarious. They haven't even got the double to wear the same colour hair.

I remember spotting a very skinny Jim Kirk at the beginning of The Final Frontier and then he magically became fat again lol. I've only seen that movie once, so I might have to check it out again. So I could be wrong.

I know it has been said many times before, but I will say it again. When I first started watching Trek back in the 1970s on my twelve inch black and white set I never noticed any of these things.

Power Play, yes. Then she complained that it was shot from so far away that it barely made a difference. It could have been Worf in Troi's outfit for all you could tell.

Same here. I used to think it was amazing how much the stunts guy/doubles looked like the actors. The Kirk vs "Kirk" fights were amazing!!!!!!!! Then came DVD, Blue Ray and HD. :weep:

I honestly don't know if it's Shatner or a double at a certain point in the fight with Finnegan in Shore Leave, but at one point you can see his toupee flip up and expose a patch of scalp.

^^^Not Shatner, that is stuntman/actor Paul Baxley's combover flipping up. It's fairly obviously Baxley's very round face if you freeze-frame it.

Sir Rhosis

Robert Beltran's butt double in the VOY episode "Tattoo" is pretty obvious. Makes me wonder just how bad Beltran's real ass was that they felt the need to use a double in the first place.
