Most obvious stunt doubles in trek

Gul Bones

Now obviously Trek isn't unique in television for having fairly obvious stunt doubles but it seems to have many of them.

First one that comes to mind is the stunt double for Data leaping over the stones in the holodeck river featured in Encounter at Farpoint.

Any more?

Specifically, Kirk fighting Finney and confronting his evil twin in Engineering. Sometimes the double's face is in plain view.

Kirk and Khan in "Space Seed" is pretty funny to watch.

And Kirk's evil twin doesn't have the right haircut, IIRC, when seen from the back in "The Enemy Within".

Not a stunt double, but James Doohan's missing finger grows back in lots of close-ups of Scotty's hands.

Brent Spiner's stunt double when Data's fighting a Borg in the first act of Descent always stands out to me.

Well he is Canadian, just like Wolverine!

Well, the bluray versions of TOS certainly make the stunt doubles way more obvious than they ever were before.

I'm sure the same will be true for the new TNG blu rays as well.

Commodore Decker and the crewman fighting in the corridor in The Doomsday Machine. SO not William Windom.

Kirk and Spock fighting in the transporter room in This Side of Paradise.

To branch out a little:

I was watching a 1978 Hawaii 5-0 last weekend. McGarrett was climbing a construction site crane to chase a bad guy. McGarrett's whole physique and hairstyle changed radically in the wide shots.

In Octupussy, when Bond is fighting on the outside of the airplane, we can very clearly see the stuntman's face.

And in every fight scene in Buffy, tiny little Sarah Michelle Geller gets a bit stockier and larger-breasted when she fights. :)

Just about any fight scene on TOS has obvious stunt doubles. I've never really noticed stunt doubles all that much in the modern shows. I know that they're there but they don't stand out in my mind as much as the TOS ones.

^ Because the modern shows were designed and shot for higher resolution screens. TOS's stunt scenes were just fine for the screen resolutions they were intended for.

Complaining that the stunt doubles in TOS are too noticeable is on a par with complaining that the colors in Citizen Kane are not vivid enough. ;)

CGI can easily fix the stunt double differences these days, Kinda surprised they did not do they in TOS-R, probably to expensive.

When I first started watching TOS, it was on a small black and white TV and do not ever remembering noticing stunt doubles. The first time I did notice them was when Kirk fought himself in "The Enemy Within" - after dad got the new bigger and colour TV. Good Lord, those were the days.

Obviously, the most obvious stunt double is Eddie Paskey. Not only was he Shatner's stand-in, he was also the "stunt finger" for Scotty at the transporter. He was Lt. Leslie and various other crewmen. He died in "Obsession" and miraculously came back to life the next episode. He was also driver of the truck that killed Edith Keeler.

That would've been cool storywise if it was actually Mr. Leslie doing the driving -- doing his part to make sure the timeline was corrected.

I know exactly which episode you're talking about.

In "Datalore," some of the shots of Data facing the camera while Lore has his back to it (or vice versa), it's fairly obvious that it's Spiner's double Guy Vardaman with his back to the camera. Same thing with the two Picards in "Time Squared."

There's also a production still from Nemesis of the Argo jeep jumping out the back of the Argo shuttle, and it's really obvious that Stewart is not driving, and Spiner is not riding shotgun.
