Of that list, I'd argue that Mel Gibson as Braveheart is the more well known role than Mad Max. It's almost arguable that Riggs from Lethal Weapon is more well known than Mad Max (although Braveheart is clearly more well known than Lethal Weapon).

I already explained the T-1000 omission. In that instance, I'm asking for the second most popular choice, since the first choice would be obvious for everyone. And your Robin Williams and Will Smith choices are not movie roles.

Why do the rules need to be so rigid? It's just for fun, right?

Also, out of curiosity, why are there no women on the list?

Well, I did ask for movie roles, and Fresh Prince and Robin Williams the stand-up comedian are not movie roles. I was just making a correction, not calling names or anything like that.

Actor names more readily came to my mind, I suppose.

    A) Woody (though for some great performances see Cloud Atlas).
    B) William Wallace.
    C) The Terminator.
    D) Rocky Balboa.
    E) John McClane.
    F) Ethan Hunt, though the question barely applies. He's best known for being Tom Cruise.
    G) J.
    H) Drawing a virtual blank here. That agent from the X Files, maybe.
    I) Han Solo.
    J) That role in Pretty Woman.
    K) Mrs Doubtfire.
    L) Jake LaMotta.
    M) Ace Ventura.
    N) Jules.
    O) McMurphy.
    P) Red.
    Q) Riggs (or was it Murtaugh?).
    R) That complete psycho Tommy from Goodfellas.
    S) Donkey.

I'd put Cruise, Ford and Nicholson as the most famous.

    D) Sylvester Stallone - Rambo

    E) Bruce Willis - John McClane

    F) Tom Cruise - Ethan Hunt

    G) Will Smith - Agent J

    H) Robert Patrick (other than the T-1000) - Mr Lisp

    I) Harrison Ford - Han Solo

    J) Richard Gere - Edward Lewis

    K) Robin Williams - The Genie

    L) Robert DeNiro - Travis Bickle

    M) Jim Carrey - Ace Ventura

Bolding where I differ from the first response. You might notice that I'm privileging roles in kids' movies somewhat. My impression is that far, far more people have seen Home Alone, for example, than have seen Raging Bull or Goodfellas.

The three most famous are Hanks, Ford and Schwarzenegger. The former two were both, at respective times, the number one box-office draw in Hollywood and the latter was independently famous (albeit in a fringe community) prior to acting and has also entered politics - a triple threat, fame-wise.

Edit: I see the OP has specified movie roles only, so I've changed my response for Will Smith from the Fresh Prince to Agent J and for Robert Patrick from John Doggett to Mr Lisp (Spy Kids).

Not looking at anyone else's answers (and not looking up the names of some of the characters):

    A) Tom Hanks - Forrest Gump

    B) Mel Gibson - Mad Max

    C) Arnold Schwarzenegger - the Terminator, but I'm not sure if it's the baddie in part 1 or the goody in part 2

    D) Sylvester Stallone - Rocky. Or Rambo

    E) Bruce Willis - John McClane

    F) Tom Cruise - ?? I don't know. He's best known for being Tom Cruise, not for any particular role. Maybe Top Gun, or Mission Impossible?

    G) Will Smith - Agent J or Fresh Prince of Bel Air

    H) Robert Patrick (other than the T-1000) - Agent Doggett

    I) Harrison Ford - Han Solo. Or Indiana Jones?

    J) Richard Gere - the guy in An Officer and a Gentleman

    K) Robin Williams - the teacher from Dead Poet Society

    L) Robert DeNiro - Travis Bickle

    M) Jim Carrey - not sure, maybe Truman?

    N) Samuel Jackson - Jules in Pulp Fiction

    O) Jack Nicholson - One Flew over Cookoo's Nest

    P) Morgan Freeman - Se7en

    Q) Danny Glover - Lethal Weapon

    R) Joe Pesci - Goodfellas

    S) Eddie Murphy - Beverly Hills Cop

Robert De Niro; Jack Nicholson; Harrison Ford (I'm not sure how much Cruise is famous for his roles and how much for... other stuff)

    1. Clint Eastwood - Dirty Harry

    2. Paul Newman - Butch Cassidy

    3. Robert Redford - Sundance Kid

    4. Steve McQueen - probably the guy from The Magnificent Seven, but there's no way I can remember his name

    5. Warren Beatty - Clyde Barrow

    6. Burt Reynolds - errrr... I dunno, Bandit?

    7. Jeff Bridges - The Dude

    8. Kevin Spacey - Keyser Soze

    9. Michael Caine - for the younger generation, Alfred. For those who are more familiar with his career, one of the many gangster roles he's played, but there's no way I can remember specific characters or films. His characters tended to be similar. Basically, it's "Michael Caine Cool Gangster role"

    10. Donald Sutherland - Hawkaye in MASH (maybe)

    11. Tommy Lee Jones - Agent K

    12. Tim Robbins - Andy Dufresne

    13. Kevin Bacon - ?? I don't know. He's best known for the 6 degrees of himself :p

    14. Sean Penn - Dead Man Walking

    15. Liam Neeson - Oscar Schindler

:o Sorry man, my bad. I intended for the two lists to complement, not compete with each other but in hindsight, a bit presumptuous of me. Apologies.

    A) Tom Hanks - Gump

    B) Mel Gibson - Mad Max

    C) Arnold Schwarzenegger - The Terminator

    D) Sylvester Stallone - Rocky (Arguably Rambo)

    E) Bruce Willis - John McClane

    F) Tom Cruise - Either Ethan Hunt or Jerry Maguire I can't decide

    G) Will Smith - J - Men In Black

    H) Robert Patrick (other than the T-1000) - A movie? Nothing. Fire In The Sky maybe

    I) Harrison Ford - Han Solo tied with Indiana Jones

    J) Richard Gere - The Pretty Woman millionaire guy

    K) Robin Williams - Mork (Edit: Just realized it's only movie roles. I'll say Mrs. Doubtfire then)

    L) Robert DeNiro - Vito Corleone

    M) Jim Carrey - Ace Ventura I suppose, though I'd like to believe Truman Burbank

    N) Samuel Jackson - Jules Winfield

    O) Jack Nicholson - Jack Torrence

    P) Morgan Freeman - Ellis Boyd "Red" Redding

    Q) Danny Glover - Roger Murtaugh

    R) Joe Pesci - Tommy Devito

    S) Eddie Murphy - Much to his dismay, it's probably Donkey from Shrek

Bonus Question: Which of the 3 actors above are most famous for their overall work/roles?

I'd say Tom Hanks, Jack Nicholson & Harrison Ford

Copland, which I was considering choosing, but neither it nor Fire in the Sky are really all that noteworthy. His ONLY truly memorable movie role was the T-1000

It depends what generation you're from. A 70s, 80s and early 90s person will see
    Will "The Fresh Prince" Smith
    Godfather's Vito Corleone
    "Maverick" Mitchell in TopGun

a late 90s or 2000 person will see
    Agent J Men In Black
Meet the Fockers Jack Tiberius Byrnes
Mission Impossible's Ethan Hunt, or Tom Cruise doing his scientology dance on Oprah's chair

Someone from the US might see Lethal weapons Martin Riggs, Someone from England or Scotland might see Braveheart
Someone from Australia might see Mad Max

A film buff will see EVERYTHING :mallory: :rommie:
