I haven't read the other posts yet, so that they wouldn't influence my choices. Answers will probably be pretty biased based on my age and preferences, and may not reflect their best performance, just their most famous one.

    A) Tom Hanks: Forrest Gump
    B) Mel Gibson: Braveheart
    C) Arnold Schwarzenegger: Terminator
    D) Sylvester Stallone: Don't know his movies
    E) Bruce Willis: The Sixth Sense
    F) Tom Cruise: Top Gun
    G) Will Smith: Men in Black
    H) Robert Patrick (other than the T-1000): Don't know who this is
    I) Harrison Ford: Indiana Jones (I chose this over Star Wars because it was more of a leading role)
    J) Richard Gere: Some sappy romance, I don't watch those
    K) Robin Williams: Mrs. Doubtfire
    L) Robert DeNiro: Analyze This
    M) Jim Carrey: Ace Ventura
    N) Samuel Jackson: Jurassic Park
    O) Jack Nicholson: The Shining
    P) Morgan Freeman: Driving Miss Daisy
    Q) Danny Glover: Haven't really seen many of his movies, not sure
    R) Joe Pesci: Don't watch his movies
    S) Eddie Murphy: The Nutty Professor

Bonus Question: Which of the 3 actors above are most famous for their overall work/roles?
    Tom Hanks
    Harrison Ford
    Jim Carrey

ETA: I'm impressed that you guys actually named the characters from the films, no way I could come close to remembering that, outside of Forrest Gump, Ace Ventura, and Indiana Jones.

    Forrest Gump

It's probably Braveheart but I think he'll always be linked with Mad Max so that people can make (not unreasonable) Mad Mel jokes.

    The Terminator

Probably Rocky, but it's about 51/49% between it and Rambo.

    John McClane

I would say Top Gun but if people actually had to name the character as oppose to the title, then it'd be Jerry Maguire (though he's both character and title).

Probably Men in Black but another tough call.

I suspect most casual movie and tv fans won't be able to place him in any other roles; for genre fans, it's probably Doggett in the X-Files or else his True Blood character. Personally, I remember him from the Sopranos.

Despite the popularity of Star Wars, I think Harrison is arguably better known for Indiana Jones, given that he played the lead and got top billing and given that the character's name was in 3 of the 4 movie titles (4, if you count the revisionist title Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark). Plus he's played Indy 3 times since his part in the SW saga ended. Whether or not any reprisal of Han changes his status remains to be seen

Probably a tie between Pretty Woman and an Officer and a Gentleman, which is a shame, as his work in American Gigolo and Breathless is more interesting (ditto Internal Affairs). Actually, I'd plump for Officer... as Pretty Woman is arguably better known for making Julia a star.

It's been so long since he had a decent role that it's hard to say, but despite his Oscar noms for Dead Poets' Society and Good Morning Vietnam, I'd say it's probably Mrs Doubtfire.

If impersonations are anything to go by then it's Taxi Driver.

Another hard one to call but despite his serious roles and the acclaim for the likes of Eternal Sunshine or Man on the Moon, he is often referred to as 'Dumb and Dumber star Jim' or 'Ace Ventura star Jim.'

Probably Pulp Fiction, though genre fans will think of Mace Windu or Nick Fury first.

Either The Shining or One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, with the Joker following behind.

    Red in Shawshank Redemption.

    Murtagh in Lethal Weapon

I would say his Goodfellas role just about nudges out his Leo Getz, probably on account of the iconic 'funny how?' scene.

Beverly Hills Cop, though to younger audiences, he'll always be Donkey!

    Hanks, Ford and Cruise.

    K) Robin Williams - Mrs. Doubtfire

    L) Robert DeNiro - Jack Walsh

    M) Jim Carrey - Ace Venture

    O) Jack Nicholson - Colonel Nathan Jessup

    P) Morgan Freeman - Narrator or God

    Q) Danny Glover - Roger Murtaugh

    R) Joe Pesci - Tommy DeVito

    Agree with all above exxcept:

Robert Patrick - o/p, how can you eliminate the T-1000, and why? That is the role for which he is most known. John Doggett to a lesser degree.

Will Smith - Yeah, gotta be Fresh Prince.

    Robet DeNiro - Don Corleone

Nice calls on Joe Pesci, Nicholson.

  15. Captain McBain

I eliminated the T-1000 because I thought that without question everyone would choose that character for Robert Patrick; I wanted to know what people would choose if that option was terminated.

I do remember Patrick portrayed a police officer or some other authority figure in a movie, but I don't recall which one. And this is movie roles, so French Prince and Agent Doggett are not options. I think Will Smith's most famous role would be the Men in Black character, or perhaps the Independence Day dude.

I think a lot of people are subconsciously picking their favorite roles for the actors, or the ones for which movies they've seen, and not the ones that the most people recognize the actor from... especially if its a role from a movie people may not have seen and still recognize the actor!

For example, Tom Cruise has been in four Mission: Impossible films, but when you say "Tom Cruise" to a random person on the street the first movie they think of is Top Gun, 90% of the time. Only younger people would think M:I, which is fair but not everyone is young.

    That being said:

    A) Tom Hanks - Forrest Gump
    B) Mel Gibson - Braveheart
    C) Arnold Schwarzenegger -Terminator
    D) Sylvester Stallone - Rocky Balboa
    E) Bruce Willis - Die Hard
    F) Tom Cruise - Top Gun
    G) Will Smith - Independence Day
    H) Robert Patrick (other than the T-1000) - Too bad, I'm saying T-1000
    I) Harrison Ford - Indiana Jones
    J) Richard Gere - Pretty Woman
    K) Robin Williams - Aladdin (it counts)
    L) Robert DeNiro - Taxi Driver
    M) Jim Carrey - Ace Ventura
    N) Samuel Jackson - Pulp Fiction
    O) Jack Nicholson - The Shining
    P) Morgan Freeman - Shawshank Redemption
    Q) Danny Glover - Lethal Weapon (yeah, not as popular as Mel Gipson.)
    R) Joe Pesci - My Cousin Vinny
    S) Eddie Murphy - Beverly Hills Cop

Bonus Question: Which of the 3 actors above are most famous for their overall work/roles?

Tom Hanks and Arnold Schwarzenegger are the clear 1 and 2, and 3 is a toss-up. I'd go with Harrison Ford or Tom Cruise, but an equal case could be made for many of them.

    C) Arnold Schwarzenegger: Terminator/Conan, actually himself

    D) Sylvester Stallone: Rocky

    E) Bruce Willis: McClane

    F) Tom Cruise: Ethan Hunt

    G) Will Smith: himself, the Fresh Prince of Bel Air

    H) Robert Patrick (other than the T-1000): that makes no sense

    I) Harrison Ford: Indiana Jones

    J) Richard Gere: that dude he played in Pretty Woman

    K) Robin Williams: himself, he is a standup comedian after all

    L) Robert DeNiro: Travis Bickle

    M) Jim Carrey: Ace Ventura

    N) Samuel Jackson: Jules Winnfield

    Q) Danny Glover: Roger Murtaugh

    R) Joe Pesci: Tommy DeVito/Nicky Santoro, actually just Joe Pesci

Most famous for their overall work I'd say
    1. Schwarzenegger
    2. Hanks
    3. Smith
