Not really. Data was fine until the producers decided to throw fans a bone by giving the impression there would be more movies to come. NEM didn't feel like a finale at all, especially not in the vain of TUC which felt like the crew's last mission.

Star Trek:Insurrection came after two good, successful films that seemed to indicate that the Next Generation films were off to a good start and in capable hands. Then came Star Trek:INS, a movie that failed at being a comedy and had a terribly thought out premise. Like TFF, it was a case of blowing an opportunity to follow up a great film with another great entry. At least in TFF though, they went big. INS deliberately went small, and its failure marked the beginning of the end of the Next Generation films, which we should have gotten more of.

I liked it at the time, so it wasn't disappointing. GEN aimed big but fell flat for me at the time.

Honestly, I think the hate comes from how Data is treated, as well as the emphasis on action, i.e. the dune buggy scene, the Scorpion fighter scene.

I personally don't mind it but it certainly isn't a film that I hurry back to revisit. I do love the music.

The dune buggy scene was not the greatest bit of Star Trek, I agree. I'm not a big fan of the whole B-4 storyline overall. I think they wanted to leave the door open to bringing back Data should TNG come back in a film, but it wasn't my favorite.

Nemesis and First Contact were the two TNG movies that felt like, well, movies. I can't really see either one as a TNG episode. They had a big feature feel to them.

But it wasn't just that. I was glad the Romulans finally got some movie love here (even if they weren't always at the forefront) and I absolutely loved the final battle scene. That was the kind of battle I was waiting for in a Star Trek movie, and you got to see the Enterprise use all it's phasers, and the collission scene was intense as well. I liked Hardy as well. I'm not a huge fan of the clone idea, but I can't take anything away from Hardy's performance. I thought he did a good job there.

GEN to me, felt big and movie-ish to me, esp. the cinematography. It is just kind of a mess plot-wise and forcing integration btwn two casts/vibes.

When I see GEN and Trek 2009 starting I watch the first few minutes then switch to something else.

Totally agree. I love the look of Generations, and I think it's held up extremely well, visually at least. I find the FX to be way superior to Insurrection, and some of FC too. At least it was a genuine big screen attempt, which Insurrection just wasn't.

The less said about the Nexus the better though.

See, thinking back, I really wasn't expecting much from either, and like INS at the time. Distinctly remember leaving the theater happy.

Most disappointing would have to be the films I don't watch regularly or if ever nowadays.

TMP, TFF, GEN, INS and STID.

If I had to pick one though, it would probably be INS. The film looks good when they stick to the Trek elements and space. Everything comes to a crawl when we get to the planet and remain on the planet. Lo-tech Trek = boring drek.

I am surprised that STID has taken so many hits on this poll.

While not my favorite Star Trek film by a LOOOOOONG shot, it was still a big hit and a pretty awesome action/adventure spectacle movie.

Indeed, most fascinating. I figured Generations and TMP or TFF or INS would be in the top spots but its NEM/ID by far..
Good to see TUC untouched by votes but lol at TWOKs 3 votes! (be like doing a Star Wars poll and Empire getting a few )

I think I noted somewhere much earlier in this thread that while I like TUC fine, I could have easily voted for it as a “disappointment “ because I went in expecting something epic and narratively very smooth, and it was anything but.

“Disappointing“ is different than “least favorite” which is why I like this thread. Ultimately, I voted for INS, which probably wasn’t my best choice in the true spirit of the thread. I could have very easily have voted TUC or TVH.

I agree, I categorically think TFF is the worst movie out of them all (I'm sure you will disagree) but I found Insurrection to be more disappointing, especially considering the budget and the advances in FX at the time. In 1998 I was expecting a blockbuster and what we got was a poor episode.

TFF is a mess....it just happens to be a mess that I love unconditionally!

With Into Darkness I think there was a section of fans that wanted and/or expected a more thoughtful Trek film after 09 was the big action heavy crowd pleaser. ID arguably being even more of a spectacle movie and with a depiction of Kirk that didn't really improve him in some people's eyes really turned a lot of people off.

I think it was expectations vs. reality and reality felt like a let down.

But, then for me, I was on a forum with so much negativity that when I finally watched it I thoroughly enjoyed it. So, I still don't hold any antipathy towards ID because it is fun, entertaining, and takes Kirk on a good emotional journey from 09. It's hard to argue against that if I'm watching it on its own merits and not my preconceived notions.

After Star Trek, I knew what these movies were going to be, very Star Wars driven rollercoaster rides with a sprinkle of substance, mainly through Zachary Quinto and Zoe Saldana. Pine I just couldn't take seriously as a commanding officer, he's more like a handsome jock who's the quarterback of the football team. Breaking school rules and getting into trouble for it. Shatner had cast a long shadow for that character and I don't think Pine could ever live up to a living legend.

Pine didn't need to live up to the legend and he knew it. He did his own thing.

Mileage will vary on if it worked or not. I say it did, because he had to learn, grow, and develop.

What was more interesting to me is that when Shatner wrote a novel about 18 year old Kirk there was a lot of similarity between how Prime Kirk behaved and how Kelvin Kirk behaved. Which makes me think (though it's an assumption) that Pine was not as far off as many would think.
