So... interested in a little Star Trek news? We have it today from a couple of angles that Paramount is currently working on another release of the Star Trek feature films, presumably to take advantage of next year's debut (in theaters and eventually on DVD and Blu-ray) of the new J.J. Abrams big screen reboot of the franchise. Our own industry sources have recently hinted that several of the previous feature films are currently receiving brand new high-def transfers and a good digital scrubbing to prepare them for future Blu-ray release. Meanwhile, over on his own website, long-time Trek scribe David Gerrold (also writer of the excellent Martian Child) had this to say yesterday (scroll down to the "And Finally..." part "

Tim King Productions invited me down to the Paramount lot to be interviewed for a documentary. Paramount is planning to rerelease all ten Star Trek movies on DVD with a bonus disc of extra material, including an interview with folks who were in the crowd scene in Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Most of those folks were Star Trek fans especially recruited for the privilege, so they gathered a few of us together and let us reminisce for awhile in front of a couple cameras. Among the attendees were Bjo Trimble (she and her husband John created the letter campaign that got the original series renewed in 68) and Chris Doohan, Jimmy Doohan's son. It was a fun couple of hours.David goes on to talk about the group's visit to the set of the new film as well, and he sounds pretty enthusiastic about what he saw. So no word yet on The Original Series in high-def, but it looks as if the films might be finding their way to DVD (again) and Blu-ray soon enough

I'm all for some cleaned up High Def versions for Blu-ray. But DVD? How many more times are they going to go to the well on that one? It always starts with the movies before they hit the T.V series so get ready for those announcments once the movies are half way released.

This was inevitable with the new film out next year... but exactly how many will buy another boxset, especially with STXI to follow by Xmas 2009? In all honesty, like the TNG 20th Anniversary set, chucking in a couple of new documentaries isn't much of an inducement to double-dip. Okay some of those early extra features for TWoK were a bit half hearted but even so...

If Paramount seriously want to tempt me into stumping up the cash for another movie box-set, then put the theatrical versions of TMP & TUC into this set, maybe get Shatner together with Daren Dochterman and recut TFF with new CGI FX. Dig out that 1983 TV documentary - Leonard Nimoy's Star Trek Memories and sort out the rights issues on those Generations trailers. To upgrade my collection, I'd want something that equals the Superman tin set or the Alien Quadrilogy.

I can see dipping again for the new pristine look on Blue-ray. I'd love to own the new movie plus "wrath of kahn" and "first contact" on that format as long as it is REALLY cleaned up with no blemishes. Superman was an AWESOME transfer but the Twilight Zone movie sucked. I'll definitly wait until I read the BR reviews before buying.

DVD? Not a chance.

the Twilight Zone movie sucked.

In what way? The film itself, or just its release on Blu-Ray?

I was talking about the transfer to Blue-Ray. But after watching it again for the first time in ages, I don't think it stands up anymore. The transfer was horrible and almost similiar to a DVD picture.Very piss poor job to say the least. Watch out for older movies on blue ray because not all of them were given the grade A cleanup if you know what I mean.

Wow. I just bought the 10-movie box set about 6 months ago - plus I own them on VHS. No way I'm buying them again on DVD no matter how many extra features they have.

Yeah, it pays to research that ahead of time before you buy the discs. They're too expensive to waste money on transfers that suck, especially since the format's whole point is supposed to be superior A/V quality.

I have the ones I want and they still look fine to me, so I think I'm done; Though I may reconsider in twenty years when they get rereleased on Holo-Wav.

I'm perfectly happy with the DVDs I have now. I will not double-dip (especially at Paramount prices!) for any of the Trek series or feature films.

I'm in no hurry to jump aboard the BluRay wagon when I'm pretty content with standard-definition DVDs. Regular DVDs are cheaper, anyway.

I'm way beyond buying any currently released DVD again for some sort of so called really cool Blu-Ray.

Especially due to the current outrageous cost of upgrading my TV and DVD player.

Paramount and CBS needs to look closely at rushing any new format Star Trek to the store shelves in the next 24 months minimum.

I want them to make a Deep Space 9 series set any chances of that happening anytime soon?

Probably not on DVD. But with a new fromat(Blu-Ray) who knows? Hopefully they won't release every season seperately BEFORE releasing the complete series. But this IS paramount we're talking about here.

I still haven't decided if I'm gonna pick up any of the movies on Blu-ray. I might at least pick up TWOK, TUC, and FC. ;)

Not until DS9 is remastered, no.

TNG, DS9 and Voyager all had their effects (and editing) done on videotape. This automatically prevents those shows from being aired in HD, or released on Blu-Ray.

To rectify this, they'd have to do what they're doing for TOS: recreate all effects, from scratch.

If only I had a Blu-Ray player. But they still cost too damn much. I'm going to have to wait a few years before I buy one of those players. I had to do the same thing for dvd players when they first came out. Kept using VHS until the dvd players were down to a reasonable cost.
