And by "banks" they probably mean individual turrets. NuEnterprise has the refit saucer with 6 banks of two turrets each, arranged at 0, 90, and 180 degrees (depending on your point of view). The style of phaser coming out mirrors TWOK style. The phasers and torpedos did seem powerful enough to deliver the coup de grace of the Narada.

The tech on this Enterprise is more true to the movies with sound effects reminiscent of TOS. When you look at the phasers instead of a single beam of energy like in TOS you get a repeating burst of red energy like in TWOK which was a film JJ looked to for some inspiration naming it the Trek film he remembered that he liked the most.
