More Firefly?

How much of this is needing money for production or just needing a place to present it? Those are kind of two different things and there's been plenty of cases where money was used to produce a movie or TV show and then they had to shop for someone to release it.

If Nathan has the cast, script, animation house and show runners collected that seems to imply they had some kind of idea on how much money they have to spend in order to be able to secure all of this.

I could see Netflix taking it up. They just better be able to tell a complete story by the end of their second season before they get cancelled.

So, naturally, I had to give the show a rewatch and, gorram it, it's still a damn good little series.

If/when we get this cartoon it'll be interesting to see how/if it picks up the vibe and tone.

Thank you for that failed DnD session back in 2005.

Serenity producers cut the budget from $100 million to $39 million (according to online articles) in order to get the studio to still make the film. I imagine with online fundraising, this project could happen. The studio would have too foot less. It's a way to go for sure, just look what Mystery Science Theater 3000 just accomplished with funding for an entire season.

And it still didn't make a profit, and that was just a few years after the show had aired so it was probably at the forefront of more people's minds.

Right, but the rest of my post noted the studio would have to foot less. That would translate into the possibility of a higher return since less was invested. And it's not like these studios don't keep making garbage that loses money when any of us could have told them that would happen.

Nathan Fillion told Deadline that Book will indeed be recast if the animated series goes forward:

Absolutely, that’s the plan. Yeah, we’re bringing back Shepherd Book for certain. Ron Glass, unfortunately, is not available. Ron once joked that he didn’t get a part when they were looking for a Ron Glass-type, and here we are again. We’re looking for a Ron Glass-type, and it’s not going to be Ron Glass.

Fillion explained why none of the original writers, such as Tim Minear, aren't returning:

Running a show is an entirely different beast from recording a voice for a show. So there’s the original folks, like Tim Minear, who are running other TV shows. They don’t have a whole lot of time, and I don’t know that I could even afford them. This is not a big money-making venture, doing an animated program. But what we did manage to do is find incredibly talented people who also love Firefly. Tara and Marc met and connected over their love of Firefly. So when we were looking for showrunners, their passion was palpable for the show. We wanted to find someone who loved it and would care for it the way we do.
Fillion said he has no interest in exploring the post-Serenity era:
You can’t bring back Firefly without bringing back all of Firefly. We toyed with the idea of spending some time in the show after the events of Serenity, and I honestly have no interest. I think Serenity was our wonderful farewell to what was an incredible opportunity. Had we only had one more chance to do something, that was it, and it was beautiful. I can’t compete with that. But what I can do is go back in time, bring the gang back together, and give people what they want, which is more Firefly. After Serenity, it’s not the same. I didn’t want to do this without my buddy Alan. And you know that’s a reason why animation is key, because Ron Glass is no longer with us. I like to think, in my heart of hearts, that this is something that he would have wanted.

Amusing that the extent of Joss' name-drop was, "Original series creator Joss Whedon is not involved in the new project but has given his blessing." I doubt he was even really considered as a part of "bringing the gang back together."

Obviously with the multitude of disgusting as the allegations against Whedon, I certainly wouldn't want him back for this project - or indeed any project, I do wonder how well it's going to go without him.

We've seen, plenty of other directors and writers have tried to emulate his style and have produced major flops and embarrassments of movies that have ruined several franchises.

Hopefully Fillion and the rest of the ensemble can bring enough enough of their character identities from the live action show to make it feel like a proper continuation of the story. The chosen showrunners seem to have a strong track record as well.

Definitely excited, but realistic about how well it might turn out given how stupid Hollywood has become and the challenges of reviving a 25 year old TV show without its original auteur.
