More Cast and Characters added to Discovery!

It's hard to say at this point how it will turn out. While all 3 are nice choices, none of them are particularly interesting or notable for the general public. However, when STNG appeared after a long TV drought, there were a lot of unknowns in the cast, with Wheaton and Burton as possibly the best known.

That was part of what I was getting at. The Tarsus IV crop blight starts popping up on various Klingon worlds, they accuse the Federation of spreading the blight to their worlds, Federation offers help sends experts aboard the Discovery.
This is possibly an answer. Or something close to this. I bet revealing his specialty was a subtle hint to fans.

Word in the yard is some actors are maybe getting callbacks today. One has a shar pei and one owns a cat.
You know who I'm rooting for!

That is a very specific breed, not too common as far as I know. Does anyone know an actor, who owns a shar pei?

Edit:

I googled around and I found John Schneider.
He has a main role in "The Haves and the Have Nots" right now though, so he probably isn't it.

This also bothers me. We were told 6-7 of the leads were cast...does this mean they are re-casting?? Not a great sign.

The last we heard, they hadn't cast the main role yet. Both could have also minor roles.

I found an actress, who owns a shar pei. Sheridan Smith. She seems to have time right now, so might be an option for DIS.

Edit: Found two more. Megan Prescott and Gemma Arterton. The first seems to have time. Arterton is likely too busy though, as she is part of a theatre play.

Sheridan Smith is eight kinds of awesome, but I can't see her moving abroad for it, and in some ways her skill set is too broad for Trek (never thought I would say that...but she has done literally everything. Musicals...scifi...straight drama...live TV...comedy....) and they probably wouldn't let her keep her accent. She would be wasted unless they go full Brent Spiner with her.

Casting Michelle Yeoh as the captain is an inspired choice. Putting it out there but I think she will be the female equivalent of Captain Picard.

I say this based on the roles Yeoh has taken on and her acting style. First of all this lady can ACT! She has played characters who project a commanding presence, but they are often soft-spoken, subtle in their mannerisms and yet deep-down very driven. Watch Croaching Tiger, Hidden Dragon or Memoirs of a Geisha- Yeoh owns those roles.

Yeoh is going to play it very differently from Kate Mulgrew. While Mulgrew added that brashness and can-do attitude with Janeway, Yeoh is probably going to play it more calculating and thoughtful, kind of like No 1 in TOS. Which is why I say Captain Georgiou (is that pronounced George - O ?) is going to captain in a style very similar to Captain Picard; the philosophical, high-principled thinker.

Once more casting Michelle Yeoh was an inspired choice and put a smile to my face.

I love Sheridan Smith. I only know her as Lucie Miller in Big Finish's Eighth Doctor audio plays but she's absolutely terrific in it. I would love to see her on Star Trek.

She is British of course....but her natural speaking voice is not in the RP mold. She can hold different accents no problem, but like most actors, has more range in her own voice. She might be a bit too local for an American audience. At least that's how expect the producers to think. I think she'd be great.

Gemma Arterton would be a superb piece of casting, based on what we know of the lead role, and her look is perfect for a Trek series. That said, she's surely too big a name?

Would love it though.

She's probably far too big a name at this point, but I'd like to see Alicia Vikander as the first officer. Great actress.

I'm not sure name-recognition value counts all that much. Heck, Scott Bakula was much better known to the general public than Patrick Stewart, Avery Brooks, or Kate Mulgrew . . . but that didn't help ENTERPRISE.

The right names are good for the promotion of a series. It might convince some people to check out the pilot on TV, who otherwise might just not care. But I think there aren't so many affordable actors out there, who will have a noticeable effect in this regard. For example Scott Bakula, when he was cast in ENT, was too unhip to be much of a special draw. Outside of big Hollywood actors, who they won't be able to get, the best names for promotion purposes are actors, who played very recently main characters in series, which got really many viewers. Michael Weatherly might have had an effect, but he is in another series now. House ended already a bit longer ago, but Hugh Laurie might still work this way. Most actors though are kind useless for promotion purposes. You might as well just get a cast of talented unknowns and produce a good series. Then people will watch it, no matter what actors are in it.
