The real confirming moment for me was when Kirk tried to be charitable towards Nero. And then Spock was happy Nero refused. Kinda confirmed both characters there for me - the bad boy shows the greatness of his soul; the perfect Starfleet officer shows his darker side. Well on their way to well-rounded-characterhood.

Yep...
I bought Pine's portrayal in the bar scene too. Making a bee-line for the prettiest girl in the place and trying to pick up on her is exactly what James T. Kirk would do.
This is exactly my experience as well. The way I saw the movie, he slowly grew into the role, and maybe that was the point since we weren't really seeing "Shatner-Kirk" yet but rather the "Proto-Shatner-Kirk". The more the movie went along, the more he began to feel like the Kirk I grew up watching. I do agree that the "seal the deal" moment was the end bridge scene. He was clearly doing his hardest to channel the Shat in that scene and it worked well without being a parody.

And the way he slapped Cupcake (or was it Cupcake's friend) in the face, when he said "so get some more guys and then it'll be an even fight".... that little slap in the face was VERY kirkish.
