I think it wouldn't necessarily be to the detriment of the show if they brought in a non-genre producer. It worked on TNG with Michael Piller.

Good TV is good TV. Let the writers make up the aliens.

There's also the very real question of who he hands it off to. There aren't many producers experienced enough that the Beeb could trust to secure the future of the show who are also prepared to take on the fan bullshit.

Holy cow, if that's actually true and not hyperbole, the BBC is extremely impoverished in terms of producer talent! They have other major problems they need to deal with.

Well, it's true to the extent that they weren't able to line up a replacement in time for Series 10 but the idea that nobody wants / is qualified for the job is utter nonsense. He has pretty much come out and said the process of finding his replacement is underway.
