Moffat to finally let a woman direct some episodes.

That's the good news. The slightly bizarre news is that it's American director Rachel Talalay who gave the world such classics as "Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare" and*shudder* "Tank Girl".

Maybe in another four or five years he'll even let one of them write a script. I'm sure I read somewhere that Shonda Rhimes is a fan.

She's a very experienced TV director since her movie career died - she's done Supernatural, Haven, Continuum, and various other things.

I doubt that he selects the directors anyway. Might have a final veto over them if he doesn't like the suggestion, but his side of things is the writing.

Oh, and if Tank Girl had had more bits like the dance number then it would have been mad enogh to be a classic!

Russell Davies definitely selected the directors (he talked about the process with Toby Hadoke in his "Who's Round" podcast), so unless something has really changed, I suspect Moffat does too.

I am still completely baffled that no one ever got Hettie MacDonald back. "Blink" is 50% her! Why would you not hire the director of that episode constantly?

I'd agree on that, her direction is flawless in that episode. But you don't know what's going on behind the scenes, she may not want to do Who again, she may not have time to do Who again.

Actually looking at wiki she hasn't done a huge amount since Blink. who nows maybe she's put her career on hold to raise a family

Oh, yeah, I'm sure there are reasons; the other director I wish would come back is Joe Ahearne, but he's talked about his.

An interesting article in the Independant about female directors in British TV which shows this issue isn't, funnily enough, just one for Who to contend with.
