Moffat Out, Chris Chibnall in

It's funny going about geek sites and seeing the discussions in the "Moffat is leaving" articles.
First there's jubilation that Moffat's leaving ("anyone is better!111"), followed by realisation that Chibnall actually wrote some Doctor Who stories. The jubilation dies down when they realise what episodes Chibnall wrote. Then someone posts a picture of Cyberwoman and everyone goes to hell.
He may end up being stellar, but he doesn't exactly have a good track record when it comes to Doctor Who.
You could almost trick yourself into thinking season 2 was good. Except it wasn't, it was merely better than season 1.
And Jeezus. People gave Moffat a hard time based on overanalyzing his works for sexism. Season 1 of Torchwood was just... Cyberwoman was the LEAST of it's problems when it came to female characters, not to mention female same-sex relationships. In fact of the two times I remember it happening, both involved evil alien possession.

Well, this is interesting Not having a new season this year sucks but I knew this was how it had to be. And the writing was on the wall for months now, so I don't see why everyone is reacting to that. I've even been pointing it out for a few months. This is no surprise, everyone stop acting surprised.
Moffat, whatever you think of him, or have thought of him I think we can all agree he's done his time and he should move on. I have nothing more to say on that matter,

Granted, his prior Doctor Who work tends to be mediocre to above average, but he does have some good qualities. Remember, he wrote that scene where Rory's father gets a letter from Rory after The Angels Take Manhattan that had half of fandom in tears. And season 2 of Torchwood did have some great character stuff in it, IMO. If he is the right choice to lead Doctor Who remains to be seen, but I won't automatically assume it's going to be crap, either.
Also, it can't be much worse that the previous two seasons with Moffat just writing monologues describing significant events rather than showing these events happening. I'm looking your way, Face the Raven and Hell Bent.

Very mixed feelings about Chibnall. But then, I had mixed feelings when Catharine Tate was announced as a full time companion after the Xmas special, and we know how that turned out.
As for Moff, yeah, he seemed to suffer from two things: one, a failure of ideas, and two, making his scripts too clever. My son and I were discussing 'The Abominable Bruide', and it wqas watchable, but way, way too clever to hold water, jad plot holes you could drive through.
Not happy about a gap year, but then it might give them time to gather some decent story ideas.

Moffat leaving...well, we knew it had to happen eventually. But the whole "We're announcing this now and 2017 will be a year to remember!!!!!!" thing is just odd. Honestly it smacks of an attempt to get the ratings back up. People are tired of Doctor Who! Give them a little break, and then they'll miss it and be back in force for series 10 in 2017!
Thanks, Mof. Thanks for Matt Smith and the fairytale vibe you brought to the show, and a few really cool story arcs, and for casting Jenna Coleman. And your prior work before you became showrunner. You weren't always good, but you did a good job overall and the show became huge globally under your watch. I'll forgive you for the bust-ups and strops behind the scenes and for River Song.

As someone who loves Russell T Davies and Steven Moffat tenure's on Doctor Who (though I would give the edge to Moffat), I'm excited and nervous for this. Part of the reason I like Moffat's spin on the show is how different it is from Davies. And vice versa when I rewatch. Each brought their own style to the show and I hope Chibnall can bring something new and maintain the quality. Time will tell.

Series 7 had a weird transition half way through. We had five episodes billed as "movie level" quality. It turned out to be far from stellar.
Part 2 of Series 7 was a mixed bag. We resolved Clara's story and purpose in half a season. It was paper thin.

Series 8 was trying to find the right tone for this new doctor with some leftover Matt Smith stories.
Series 9. I haven't even watched "The Witch's Familiar".
I just don't have the drive/interest as a previously do. Maybe i'm burned out

I'm glad Moffat is going. Never cared for his tenure and lost interest in the show when RTD left. Hopefully things go back to normal.
The lack of a series this season is dumb. Moffat / Capaldi must have something else planned for this year which forces Who to take a back seat, OR the BBC want to focus on Class this year to avoid it being outshined by its parent show.

My heart lept a little bit when I saw a headline about Moffat's departure on the AV Club. Been hoping for this for a while now. A shame, because he was the best writer under RTD and I really wanted to like his tenure, but I felt his era was mostly a creative disaster. The show and the character of the Doctor have both completely disappeared up their own asses at this point. (A similar fate has befallen Sherlock.) Moffat took a series that used to be appointment viewing for me and turned it into something I maybe will watch if I happen to remember it's on this week. I didn't even watch series 9 until it hit Netflix and I only put it on in the background while I did chores.
Well some good things can be said of Moffat:
1. He would actually use time travel as part of the plot and get creative with it.
2. He could write some very powerful speeches for the Doctor.
3. Even when the story wasn't all that good, he would still make it funny from time to time.

That. My girlfriend showed me this idiocy on facebook.... this twat is a testament to crap. What the bloody fuck? Each episode he's penned is a malodorous pile of crap. Fuck off. Done. *drops make-believe microphone*
It's too bad we won't get a full series, but hopefully Moffat uses the extra time to make his final series really good. As for Chibnall, his who episodes may not have been the best, but Broadchurch was really enjoyable. Maybe he's [become] better at running his own show than writing for other people.

^Yes, that's my point. I know he's a fan, and I'm concerned that another fan taking over isn't necessarily a good idea. That's why there was a "but" between the two clauses. Though I guess I could've been clearer.
