Modern Warfare2 General Thread

Playing MW1 over the last couple of days and I'm reminded to ask, "IW, where the fcuk is my Dragunov in MW2?"

Hopped in to a game, right away some jerk with a wallhack... I quit... found an app called mw2 server admin or something like that... basically it uses winpcap (kind of a packet sniffer API) and when you are host it reads the names of the players from various IW.net and associates them with IPs. Then it has a button for 'banning' which just adds a firewall rule to the winpcap driver to block all traffic from their IP. You access it through a web interface, and these days steam has a built in web browser so you don't even have to alt+tab out of the game or anything.

After downloading, I went into a game, lo and behold it had the very same cheater, and in short order thanks to the magic that is a decent quality internet connection with properly forwarded ports, i quickly became the host. I let the guy shit talk for a few seconds about how he's hacking and there's nothing we can do about it... said "Bye bye" and watched him timeout in futility. An aimbotter joined not too much later and got a pretty quick 'ban' himself.

I didn't want to have to resort to this tool. I know some people use it to kick people just because they're doing well, or using weapons the host doesn't like, or whatever... which I think is total bullshit. But for getting rid of confirmed hackers it's great! After those two losers I had about two hours of quality gameplay to practice my lacking sniper skills (though I did just finish the unlock all attachments challenge for Intervention, and even had 3 games in a row where I started by getting an 11-0 killstreak for an AC130!)...

When it was time for my last match of the night I busted out the trusty AR build with a red dot M16 and of course did far better overall (despite only getting one predator killstreak at the very end).

Sadly I doubt the tool exists for console users, though I suppose in theory it could, but you'd probably have to route your xbox through a PC as a proxy or something, and I doubt anybody actually bothered to code the tool to sniff the packets from the console versions.

Still, I have a nice shortcut for it right below mw2 multi in Steam

i've just been on a game where i think someone had hacked it. the sound was all slow and slurry and everyone was able to leap around like fucking Neo in the Matrix. it was mad.

Wow, in back to back games I first went 1-15 on Carnival, and then 35-0 on Storm. The 1-15 was pretty brutal, but not entirely unexpected when I'm running my sniper class. Still a work in progress.

But, it didn't matter how hard I tried, I just couldn't die that second game. I know I've had a longer streak, 38, I think, but it's hard to argue with the no deaths. I don't know how many of my kills were actual sniper rifle kills, but there was at least a few :). I do know that the Raffica akimbo ran out pretty quickly, so I had to rush a guy with a UMP to stab him, barely surviving, then emptied his UMP into his buddies, and had to rush another guy with a rapid fire vector (and scavenger judging from the ammo the thing had when I picked it up), and knifed him as well.

The hacks can suck, no doubt about it. Its why I'm looking forward to BOps-Treyarch likes to learn from IW's mistakes. The latest console hack? Invulnerable Harriers. This is getting old fast. It took 3 of us a combined 7 shots to drop one plane. Then an AC130 came out, and nobody had any missiles...

Treyarch has a well-earned reputation for making the "shitty" COD games... COD3, WAW... they're just... not that good, though that's probably more true for the single player than the multi. On the PC side the dedicated servers will solve tons of issues. Whether they fix some of the other pressing multiplayer issues like tube spam, who knows. But for Xbox 360 land I think you might be in trouble, I don't imagine dedicated servers are coming to the console versions, and with Jtagged 360s around I just don't see things getting any better there.

Treyarch has already dealt with the Jtag problem regarding BOps. They are also assigning dedicated security teams to the next game to stop glitches/cheats as they are found.

And Waw rocked-don't know what PC was like but I still go back and play on 360. Their lobby is better than IW, some of the party features are next-gen by comparison, and they deal with things like tube spamming and team killers more effectively.

I can't speak much to WAW multiplayer... but the single player was dreadfully uninspired. All the IW COD games had great single player, even if MW2's plot was a touch incoherent, it still plays great. COD3 single player was awful as well.

I did love COD:UO multiplayer though... which if I understand correctly was developed by a team who mostly ended up at Treyarch in the end. They added the sprint button to the franchise... which was great... Except when IW decides to pair it with a marathon and a lightweight perk

I'm a bit curious how 'dedicated security teams' are going to take care of jtag though. As far as I understand it jtag lets you run unsigned code which means you can do stuff like wallhack on your local system much like you would on a PC. With the PC typically you just boot someone from the server when it's obvious they're cheating... VAC or PunkBuster and the like will try to detect that stuff against a database of known cheats and you could possibly get a ban there.

The problem right now with PC is with no dedicated servers cheaters aren't getting effectively banned, and VAC apparently can be disabled with no penalty because IW (must stand for Infinite Wisdom) didn't bother to require VAC to be enabled while connected to IW.net.

With a jtagged 360, I see the same problems as PC is having, but with none of the solutions. Brute force 'security teams' banning cheaters permanently could work I suppose, but I doubt they're going to hire enough people to make it work. I do have to plead some ignorance on the various jtag hacks though. As I understand it the Xbox 360 won't multitask like a PC so maybe the hacks aren't quite as robust. But Mario Kart Wii is much the same, people can mod the game and render any online match unplayable for everyone else.

World at War's multiplayer was great. Sure, it had its map glitches and was a bit buggy to start with, but once they patched it all up, it worked great. A lot of people complained about certain weapons being overpowered - mainly the MP40 - but I never really felt it was much of a problem. I used the Gewehr and the STG-44 and did alright on most games.

There are things I loved about it, that I really miss on MW2, that I hope Treyarch bring back for Black Ops;

Party chat on ALL game modes. I hate being forced to go into game chat on most game types on MW2. The lobbies are usually full of dicks, and I end up having to mute everyone except my mates. I'd much rather be able to stay in party chat like you could on WaW.

The 'War' game mode. Loved that game. I think I must have spent the majority of my time on War, or Hardcore War. Was sorry to see that it was left out of MW2.

Nemesis. This was only a cosmetic thing really, but I loved seeing who my nemesis from the other team was on the stats screen at the end of each game.

Squads. That was a great feature. Being able to join a squad, so you can stay with the same team of people for a while, really made the game a lot more fun. Again, IW didn't bother.

The improvement I would most like to see to multiplayer is a ranking system akin to Halo.

It would solve two of the biggest problems with MW2 MP.

1) It would match you against similarly ranked players.

2) It would be a good yardstick to really measure how good someone is.

No no, I like being put into games with noobs. That's where the 35-0 rounds that validate my existence come from! :guffaw:

WaW SP was ok, although suffered hugely with the invisible-line bollocks.

MP was decent, with a large and varied selection of maps. Biggest disappointment was that the seven-killstreak reward was 'attack dogs'. Also wasn't won over by the inclusion of tanks either, but nothing major.

Best part of WaW, was the novelty addition, nazi zombies. I've still got WaW and still play it, a lot, largely due to this. Great fun, and something that it sounds like they're bringing back in BOs.

Difference between IW and Treyarch is that the latter knew that they could learn a lot from the former. By contrast, IW seem to have begun to believe their own hype and that levelled at Treyarch and as such figured that they couldn't learn anything from them, which was just wrong.

Taking out party-chat in particular was a huge mistake, made even worse by IW telling us that it was to 'stop cheating'. Yet they were ok with allowing ample opportunities and incentives for boosting? WTF?

IW were great until they began to believe that they were the greatest thing since sliced bread.

I hear you! The jtag issue is already addressed-Treyarch found a simple but effective code overlay that basically puts a jtagged hacker into limbo as soon as they try to activate the hack-No, don't know the technical explanation and No, don't understand why IW won't do a fix for this game. Maybe it has to be in the game code to work...

Servo summed it up pretty good-I endorse his post as an example of clear thinking regarding the difference between IW and Treyarch CODs. COD3 had flaws-but Treyarch struggled mightily to fix them in WAW. They did admirable work and I eagerly anticipate BOps.

Well, I think IW is fresh out of coders. They're all at Respawn! I'm not convinced they could push out the simplest of bug fixes if they wanted to at the moment.

But yeah, I think they just don't give a fuck. That smarmy douche "fourzerotwo" Robert Bowling tells nothing but lies as they completely ignored their community.

I think the true lineage of these games will be felt in whatever Respawn releases down the road... and I'm talking about the lineage that goes back to Medal of Honor: Allied Assault. I'll give Black Ops a try I'm sure, but no, I can't pin my hopes on Treyarch.

Just playing W@W right now. Man the Juggo-MP40 is overpowered. My KDR goes right into the positive when I use that class as oppose to something stupid like the M1 Garand. I hopefully Black Ops have some balance.

Edit: Socially retarded kids on X box live can go to hell. Stop screaming into your mics!!!

It is a crazy combo. You don't see it much in hardcore, though. There, the big gun is the STG. BTW-best way to stop MP-40/Juggy is a Thompson-fast reaction and heavy hitting.

Holy crap, they finally added a no kill streak mode? That might be enough to get me to play the game again.

i had a crap Sabotage match this morning. TF 141 was camping the shit out of half the map and we never got to plant the bomb. they planted it once, but i defused it. ended up going to sudden-death overtime with no respawns and it ended up 0-0 as the time ran out.
