Modern Warfare2 General Thread

I know I'm not the only one who experiences frustrations with seemingly impossible deaths. From time to time, I hear someone say into their mike "Oh bullshit!". And I'm always thinking, I feel your pain dude.

A question for all you XBL users. How's the lag on XBL? I'm playing the PS3 version and I'm starting to get really fed up with lag. So I'm wondering, if the XBL version (since XBL is not free) is any better?

For me, on XBL, lag is generally little to none. It varies on the host, but probably only one game out of every fifty or so has lag that effects gameplay. And of course I either wait for the host to change, or leave the game and find a new game with a better host.

There can be lag but its really easy to id the culprit. We had a guy last night with 2 yellow bars that was goofing the game up. We finally team-killed him until he left-then came from behind to win. Not nice, but necessary. Usually, any lag is in appearance only, with the game still playing clean-but there are exceptions like last night. The most annoying lag effect is when you shoot first and hit him-but you die and he doesn't. Rare, but serious crap when it happens.

I get that a lot.

Just did this speed test. Perhaps the upload speed is the culprit.

Last Result:
Download Speed: 6789 kbps (848.6 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 387 kbps (48.4 KB/sec transfer rate)

Uh, yeah, could be. My upload is like 4 mbps, sometimes hitting as high as 6. Your upload sends your response to the game in progress-no wonder you have lag. The miracle is that you can connect at all...

Well dammit, there's not much I can do about it. I could switch to DSL but it's even slower. Our internet, which is cable internet provided by Mediacom, was down a couple of days last week and maybe they still don't have it completely fixed, because I know I've gotten closer to 1 MB uploads in the past when I tested it. They promise "up to" 12 DL, and 1 UL. So much for that.

Generally my connection always shows up in the green and quite often full bars.

That's generally a good sign. I pay extra for TW's "premium" connection just so my xbox performs faster and smoother. The standard connection is fine for email but the Roadrunner high-speed is a gamer's wet dream.Particularly in games like this that have so much going on at once. Did you reset after the outage was fixed? That clears your IP and can clean up the connection sometimes.

If by reset, you mean restart the modem/router, (my cable modem and router is one device) no I didn't try that. I remember now that in the past, simply rebooting the modem/router has helped so I'll try that.

Also I'll point out that the speed test numbers listed above were done on my laptop with a wireless connection. The PS3 is connected directly to the router by a ethernet cable. Presumably that connection MIGHT be a tad faster (but maybe not enough to make a difference.)

Well I've discovered something that might be the cause of some of my lag. When I play the game, when the online screen comes up, it lists my router type as open. When I run the PS3 connection test, it's telling me that I have type NAT 3 and gives me a little message about possible communication issues.

So I googled this, and found info on it and some sources say NAT 3 can cause lag, and there are general instructions on how to change it to NAT 2. The thing is, I don't understand this stuff at all and I've very reluctant to go in to my router and start messing around with things when I have no clue what I'm doing.

Plus, I could have sworn I went through this sometime in the past. Is it possible that it could be NAT 2 for one item (my 360) and NAT 3 for the PS3?

Wish I could help you but I don't get it either. My NAT type is OPEN. My buddy was having issues with lag-and his was the other setting, some kind of partial thing. Can't remember what its called on MW2. His would flip back and forth between that and open-he had to re-set the function on his modem to stop it. Best I can do ya. Sorry.

Well I've decided I'm not gonna mess with it, because I know just enough to really mess things up. When my online screen for MW2 comes up, it says NAT Type: Open. So I think it's okay even though I'm NAT 3. And it's like this, yeah the lag is probably causing me a kill here and there, but I suck so bad, it ain't gonna make THAT much difference.

The risk of you causing any major problems by tinkering with the router is less than minimal, as you can just restore the default settings if anything goes wrong.

Well my router was doing some really odd things Sunday. I've been playing the PS3 version of MW2, but I've got some friends playing the 360 version, so I got a deal on the 360 version and started playing it some Sunday. The 360 version said my NAT type was open----at first. After I played the 360 version for a bit, I decided to go back to the PS3 version (havent' maxed my level yet) and after I was shutting it down, I noticed all of the sudden that the Nat Type as shown by the PS3 version was all of a sudden saying "Strict." I'm like WTF? So I turn on the 360 version and it's now saying "Moderate" where moments before it said "Open."

So I go into my router admin screen, I noticed that the port forwarding stuff for the PS3 had already been done (which is what I thought). So I go back to MW2 and now both versions were saying "Open" again.

This shit drives me up the wall.

This Unlimited Care Package glitch needs to be fixed, quickly. It's making the game boring as hell.

For my money, the need to nuke the Commando perk. Good grief, it's ridiculous. For whatever reason, I hadn't run into it too much while playing on the PS3. But on the 360, those "Marathon, Lightweight, Commando" guys were everywhere. It was like playing against Superman. They would just wade right through a hail of bullets to kill you with a knife. Frickin' ridiculous.

I don't see it that often. When I do its time to break out the striker-I can kill commandos with that. Give a shotty a try-it might help stop them.
