Modern Warfare 2: Prestige Edition... comes with night vision goggles!

Re: Modern Warfare 2: Prestige Edition... comes with night vision gogg

Yeah, no body is forcing anyone to buy these things.

It's pretty cool package, though I would only buy them if I had much more expendable cache. Right now I would not feel right wasting 150 on this.

Personally i would find out what the street value of those NVGs are before I plonk the money.

Although i do have a laugh at the hypocrisy of it all, one minute Activation are screaming in public the PS3 needs a price cut then they do this, and the PS3 being the only system that wont see any piracy of the game, you have to chuckle.

Why is this hypocrisy?? It cost $ to develop on the PS3. And if the base isn't big enough or doesn't buy as much of the game as 360 the math will start to kick in and you start wondering what's the point of spending all the money.

Activision is in the business to make $.

If they can squeeze and extra dollar out of you they will. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Price_discrimination which is exactly what they are doing and I approve of it.

Re: Modern Warfare 2: Prestige Edition... comes with night vision gogg

The night vision can't be real. The PE would cost $1,000 if it were...

Re: Modern Warfare 2: Prestige Edition... comes with night vision gogg

They're real, the same way you can buy a Vespa or one of those little electric razor-style scooters with a seat on it. They do the same thing, just not as well.

I must note that that man's voice makes me want to smack him.

I stopped caring about CoD a while back, but I do have a W@W dev-team hoodie. SUCK IT NOOBS! TF2 4 LIFE!

The hypocrisy is one company publicly shouting for another too cut its prices while they increase theirs.

Guess you don't get it or how businesses operate. Fair enough.

Re: Modern Warfare 2: Prestige Edition... comes with night vision gogg

Shouldn't Sony be able to demand that games be cheaper so that gaming becomes more appealing and then they can sell more hardware?

What's the point of having a cheap console when games cost 60-70 dollars?

Just because that's "how businesses operate", doesn't make it any less hypocritical. The meaning of the term, or Haggis' use of it, doesn't diminish just because the hypocrisy is deemed to be acceptable behaviour in big business. Guess you don't get it. Fair enough.

Forbes had a breakdown of game costs a couple of years ago.

Personally I also think a lower price point, like say $30 on all console games would really spur sales, and most games would sell more then double of what they would of sold at $60 but we'll never know for sure. With Valve talking about how much revenue they made when they had a 50% off Steam sale for L4D it does make me think that many gamers feel that games are over priced.

One has to wonder about the substainibility of the video game industry, especially in light of today's global economy. I'm an avid gamer, but for the most part, I've pretty much quit buying new games because they're simply too high priced. $60 is way too much to pay for game that you can beat in a day's time. Granted there's online play for replay value, but not everybody wants online gaming.

And then to hear the developers side of the story, they're talking about the millions of dollars of investment that go into the development of a game, so they need the high prices to recoup their investment. So you have to wonder, are we going to reach a point where new creativity can't substain itself in the market?

Yup they can demand that too and are more than welcome too. But as the Wii has proven cheap games don't drive console sales or making gaming more appealing.

Point of selling a cheap console is the the business model of not making money on consoles but rather getting in on the piece of the action or residuals you get from selling the games.

If you're patient, every game drops significantly in price when the retailers want to clear out shelf space and when the sequel comes out. Assassin's Creed II and Bioshock 2 are coming out, so why not buy the first games for half the cost?

Re: Modern Warfare 2: Prestige Edition... comes with night vision gogg

I already do that by waiting a little while and then buying used on Ebay. I've bought a lot of used games at significant savings on Ebay and have only been burned once by a bootleg copy of Chinatown Wars for the DS.

Re: Modern Warfare 2: Prestige Edition... comes with night vision gogg

I posted this elsewhere but I suppose I'll post it here too:

Modern Warfare 2 with night vision goggles, Guitar Hero 5 with new plastic instruments, Tony Hawk with a plastic skateboard, DJ Hero with a plastic turntable, I think I see what Activision's strategy is. Trying to bleed gamers dry in a horrible economy. Classy.

Also it makes me pretty angry they are charging $60 for the PC version when they don't have to pay the licensing fees the console versions do. I'm not happy with how similar W@W was to MW, and MW2 looks like more of the same. After discovering Team Fortress 2 pretty much any multiplayer mode besides Left 4 Dead is no longer a real draw for me since I know I'm at most going to play it for a short time and then go back to TF2.

I bought CoD2 when I got my 360 and have been buying the rest of the series on release day since then but I'm seriously considering not buying MW2 until a pretty big sale since I'm just getting tired of the franchise and the way Activision is running it into the ground.

Spot on.

The extra stuff is awesome but I don't get how sucking money from an already ailing economy will work. Most people are living off of every last penny they have and I don't see how expensive equipment for games is going to make anyone want to buy them.

Re: Modern Warfare 2: Prestige Edition... comes with night vision gogg

^ Except that the goggles aren't required to play MW2. All the other games mentioned have specific controllers/equipment as part of the novelty factor of the game, and are required to fully appreciate the gameplay. The goggles are merely a collectors item, that you are completely free to pass on without affecting your experience of the game.

Think they're ridiculous and overpriced? Fine. Just buy the standard edition, enjoy that, and quit complaining that Activision are trying to "bleed people dry" just because they're releasing a collectors edition that no-one is forcing you to shell out for.

Re: Modern Warfare 2: Prestige Edition... comes with night vision gogg

The problem is that this is just part of a larger pattern that you can see happening at Activision. Dropping games like Ghostbusters and Brutal Legends because they can't whore them out yearly, turning their studios into yearly sequel factories (or in some cases like Guitar Hero more like quarterly), raising prices of games in the UK and PC prices in the US, and releasing a bunch of games with large and expensive bundles.

Not only that, but Activision CEO Bobby Kotick is one of the most disliked CEOs in the gaming industry. Every time I see him say something I dislike him more and more. It seems like nearly every time I see some Activision piece of news typically it lowers my opinion of the company. That's not a good thing. This news about the MW2 Collector's Edition was just the latest news that dropped my opinion of Activision.

I personally think the last thing you want to give pissed off RROD owners is military equipment.....

But, again, no-one is forcing you to buy this stuff. It's not like you have to buy a new guitar and/or instruments every time they release a new GH game. Hell, the instruments are even compatible with the Rock Band series, which is made by a completely different developer.
The price increase is only a problem if you actually end up paying over the odds for the game. Smart people will look around and find cheaper deals. If you're the kind of person who goes out and pays full price for a game on release day, without looking for a cheaper deal, then you deserve to get screwed.

Games companies have been releasing special collectors editions of games for years, and seeing as no-one is forcing you to buy the Prestige edition, and not buying it will not affect your enjoyment or experience of the game, I fail to see why people are bitching about this so much.

Don't like it, don't buy it. Simples.
