MLS 2008 - where it's soccer, not football!

Talk about a double-whammy.

TFC lost 3-1 - after going a goal up - against Chivas USA. At the time, I kinda felt, well, somewhat detached from the result, since the depleted team was likely to lose, and I was taking in the view of Toronto from the West Stand and the atmosphere at the stadium for the first time, and stuff.

However, just now, I was watching Canada (which included Deportivo's Julián de Guzman) go a goal up against Honduras down at Stade Saputo in Montréal... only to go down 2-1 in the second half, get a player sent off... and to add insult to injury, the player who milked the tackles enough to get the player red carded ordinarily plays for Toronto FC!

Damned MLS insisting on playing matches on FIFA competition dates...

As you can see, I feel a lot worse about the second result than the first. Garrrrrrrrrrrrg.

I'm pretty disapppointed in Canada's performance as well, but to me it's mostly Dale Mitchell's tactics, subs, and formations that are killing Canada. Now they have to win 3 of their last 4 games (no easy task as 3 of them are on the road and 2 of them are against Mexico).

Definitely looked like Canadian soccer was on its way up recently. Guess not.

Well it is on its way up. We just need a world class manager.

Last night, when Canada subbed Gerba in to support Friend, and Canada started playing a more attacking style, they looked pretty good.

Are we supporting a much weaker league then we thought? Three out of 3 MLS teams have lost so far. Including DC losing at home.

Apparently, that design is the exact same as the second one that the Metrostars were going to get, before the current plans for Red Bull Arena were set.

And last night's game was not all that fun - but bear in mind that Saprissa are a damned good team (one of the few non-Mexican teams to be a perennial regional power).

Oh well, here's hoping the Impact do well tonight!

Ottawa? Is support for soccer there really that strong that they'd go to Ottawa ahead of Montreal or Vancouver?

Well, in terms of bids, Ottawa's bid is better than Montreal (who hasn't submitted an official bid yet and is balking at the 40 million expansion fee) and Vancouver (who's bid hinges on the city building a stadium).

And in the CONCACAF Champions League, L'Impact de Montréal beat Joe Public FC 2-0 in Montreal. The same Joe Public that beat the New England Revolution 6-1 on aggregate.

The Group Stage is certainly throwing up a few interesting results - and it seems that the Mexican sides involved are, so far, learning not to take their Central American opponents lightly...

...not least Cruz Azul, who didn't bother bringing their first team against the Honduran side Marathón - and got themselves spanked 2-0 as a result.

(Heh, Azul are at the same level as D.C. now!)

Oh, also:

The Impact looked impressive during a victory over Joe Public of Trinidad & Tobago in the opening game of the group stage in the CONCACAF Champions League, but there was at least one interested spectator who wasn't sold.
Joe Public head coach Keith Griffith, who initially applauded the Impact's performance that saw his team totally dominated in a 2-0 result before 7,631 on a rainy night at Saputo Stadium last night, boldly predicted a different result when the teams meet again, next month in Trinidad.
"The next time we see the Impact down at Marvin Lee Stadium, we'll beat them by four goals clear for sure," Griffith said. "I'm quietly confident, but I won't give you the reason why.
"We'll beat them by three, four clear goals for sure. We knew we had the chances tonight and (goalkeeper Matt) Jordan can't be that brilliant again."
Upon learning of Griffith's remarks, Impact head coach John Limniatis could only wonder what game his counterpart had been watching.
"Unless he has a direct line to God, who tells him what the result will be," Limniatis said, shaking his head.
Hahahahaha...

And the Galaxy have finally awakened to beat a super injured DC United team 5-2. Maybe it just isn't Dc's year...

I got a little worried when I heard the commentators talking about how Landon Donovan might end up going to the Bundesliga after this season. I'm not a Galaxy fan, but I wish American players would stay in MLS and help to continue building the sport up here in the United States. But I understand that they have more chances for money and prestige by leaving to play in Europe.

If the Galaxy qualify for the CONCACAF Champions League next year, that might be more of a reason for Landycakes to stay in MLS...

...speaking of which, this coming week will see Saprissa go to Cruz Azul, the Impact host Atlante and D.C. go to Honduras to take on Marathón.

Houston got a point on the road, the Islanders won 3-1 against Santos Laguna in a game of water polo, and Saprissa got cruz-ified at the Estadio Azul 4-0.

D.C. and Montréal games on tonight!

And Montreal ended up drawing Atlante 0-0 which is a great result. Although I was hoping that Montreal would end up winning as they had a lot more chances than Atlante.

Help us Dyna-mo Hous-towney, you're our only hope...

...well, except for L'Impact and the Iskanders!

(Yes, I changed the spelling deliberately.)
