I think that perhaps the need to raise the sun and the moon manually only arose after Discord's rule of chaos.
Then again, maybe it's best not to think about these things too hard because we'll never find a satisfying explanation.

Yeah, not all of Laurens ideas were that great, but they're trying to gradually phase out the sun and moon thing. Too many inferences of the system being stable enough on it's own these days.
Maybe that can be used to explain why 'Tia and Luna aren't active in every battle: Their powers are diminished/dwindling because their respective celestial charges are/have entered into a state of balance...of harmony, if you will.
Maybe now that Discord is back, things are settling down. Or the Tree of Harmony fixed things on being given the Elements back.

I've always kind of hoped Twilight was a direct descendant of Starswirl the Bearded.Sunburst the Douchebearded? that's not a name destined for glory right there.
Starswirl, Sunburst....oh hell no, please tell me that's not where this is going.
I think Hearthswarming Eve implied she was the descendant of Smart Cookie, his apprentice.

Do you mean Clover the Clever? She was Starswirl's apprentice. Also, I think Smart Cookie was played by Applejack in the pageant.
