The Apple family is huge, and tough, they've always got the rest of the family to support and love them. Just remember Sisterhooves Social, Apple Bloom has all the love and security she needs even without her parents, she'll be fine.

Also, interesting revelation that the family's name is Smith, not Apple (from this line in "The Gala Song": And I'll earn a lot of money for the Apple family!).

Haven't seen this yet (still a few eps behind) but "Granny Smith" is also the name of a variety of apple often used in apple pie.

^Granny talks about the "Smith family" (referring to Applejack and Applebloom's ancestors) being present at the founding of Ponyville, so it's not just an assumption based on the name.

Then again it depends who she married, Twilight's mother is refered to by Celestia as "Mrs. Sparkle", Granny (or Annie as the fans have started calling her now) Smith could have married an earthpony with the Apple name, and subsequent generations have all been the Apple family, she's just refered to affectionatley as "Granny Smith" from her maiden name.

^That's what I gathered from it, Chem. None of Granny Smith's family had apple-based cutie marks. Her dad had an acorn on his flank, her mom had a sewing machine and it looked like one of her brothers had a banjo on his flank.

The Cakes have it easy. She's Cup Cake and he's Carrot Cake. They didn't have to change the monograms on their towels.
