MLB Talk - 2010 Season

The Nats killed the Mets today, 13-3. Usually I'm happy to see the Nats win (got to support the local team), but I don't like seeing the Mets lose. :(

it's almost making me want to watch the WGN feed, just to see those douchebags deal with this

How are Len Kasper and Bob Brenly "douchebags?"

They're very critical of the Cubs when it's warranted (which is to say, quite often; it's the same behavior that got Steve Stone canned by the Cubs), incredibly respectful of the opposition, they call a solid game, have incredible chemistry, and don't talk for the sole purpose of hearing themselves talk (unlike quite a few other broadcasters across baseball -- Hawk Harrelson, Chip Caray and Joe Buck, I'm looking at you).

For the record, at the beginning the postgame, after getting the handoff from Kasper's introduction, Brenly said, "Len, this was a game that represents everything that has gone wrong with the Cubs this season and just how many changes need to be made to the team. They were outplayed by the Mets in every respect."

What's your problem with the Cubs' TV team? I can understand hating Chip Caray while he was calling their games on television -- but he left town in 2004, and you weren't even a fan of baseball in 2004, were you? -- but Kasper and Brenly have, in my memory, never been anything but professional. Along with Duane Kuiper / Mike Krukow, the Mets' trio of Cohen / Darling / Hernandez, Jon Miller, Gary Thorne, Dick Bremer / Bert Blyleven, and Vin Scully, they're some of the best working today, I feel.

I wonder if you're confusing them with Hawk Harrelson and Steve Stone, who call White Sox games -- which are also shown on WGN. (Originally, WGN was to show 64 Cubs games and 30 Sox games this season, with the remainder being shown on Comcast Sports Net or nationally, but after the Cubs faceplanted, WGN began shifting more and more Cubs telecasts over to CSN and WCIU and bumping up its Sox telecasts by the truckload.)

Harrelson is known for sayings like "score one for the good guys," "the bad guys in today's game are [team]," and basically being an overbearing blowhard who won't shut the hell up about how great the Sox are and how terrible and vile their opponents are. If anyone's a horrible WGN baseball announcer, that's the one.

Yeah, I think I musta been thinking of the White Sox crew. My bad.

Is Harrelson the one who goes "He gone!" when the other team strikes out?

That's the one.

And, to be fair, Stone is still one of the best color commentators in history. He's just working with one of the worst play-by-play men in history.

(Also, just for the record -- teams hire their own broadcasters and put them on television / radio. The stations don't hire or pay them. Unless it's a team-owned channel, like YES, it's not really fair to refer to a broadcast duo as "the WGN guys" or whatever.)

Ubaldo Jiminez finally got his 18th win today! First pitcher to make it to 18 this year, and broke a Rockies record.

Ok.

Guess the Mets couldn't enjoy that last Cubs game for long... :(

Also sucks that the Yankees got beat, but I'm not surprised the O's are turning it around. With Buck Showalter, how could they not?

Lost in 10 to the Marlins. Melky Cabrera is a terrible on defense and a mediocre hitter. Won't be sorry to see him go. He doesn't really seem interested in being a Brave.

Phillies are still 1 game back, they have a double header against the Marlins tomorrow, I'm really hoping they can at least split.

They did indeed split, but the Braves lost to the Pirates. Phils are a half game back!

Of course, keep in mind that the Phillies are a game and a half up on the Giants for the Wild Card. It's possible that both teams will make the playoffs no matter what (although where remains to be seen).

I actually do think both teams will make it after the epic Padres collapse now.

Dillon Gee really did great for the Mets the other day. I hope they give him another chance, and like soon.

As for the Yanks, I like what I've seen so far from Nova. Plus, he's got the number 47, which is always a plus. ;)

And the Phillies keep pace, but lose Rollins again (not sure for how long). Seriously, it's amazing that the Braves haven't run away with the division with the amount of injuries the Phils have had.

Derrek Lee and Rick Ankiel have been complete busts, Troy Glaus is falling apart, Derek Lowe can't get a 1-2-3- inning to save his life, Kris Medlen and Chipper are both out for the season, Tommy Hanson always gives up runs in the first and second innings... the list of woes just goes on and on. A month ago, they were on top of the world and now they just look pathetic.

I'm pretty sure a local sportscaster has been referring to the Arizona Diamondbacks as the 'D-bags' instead of the 'D-backs' all season.

Rockies win their 7th in a row today. Left for dead in the playoff race last month, they're climbing back into it. Carlos Gonzalez continues to make a Triple Crown push - 32 HR, 100RBI and a .340 batting average.

^^ Drew Litton nails it again!

What an amazing couple of series against that Padres and now the Reds, both strong teams. Who was this kid that stole home to win the game today? Incredible.
The Rockies are certainly one of the most dominant late season teams. Too bad they can't win a few more in the early months.

That was his first stolen base and he steals home.

Too bad they can't win a few more on the road on a regular basis and late season heroics wouldn't be an issue.
