MLB Pseudo-Season 2020: Roger, Dodgers

I’m very, very happy with the new, new Mets manager. He was my preferred choice, well more than Beltran. I loved Beltran as a Met, very thankful for his commitment to the team. However I never thought he was the right choice for manager. Not straight away, but whatever. I also don’t think he need to quit or be fired. I understand the reasons but I think an apology would have been sufficient.
 
So the Cubs already lost Steve Cishek to the White Sox and now Brandon Kintzler has gone to the Marlins.

2 of our best relievers gone and we've signed....some trash/reclamation projects.

And oh yeah, we also signed 30 year old OF reclamation project Steven Souza instead of oh, IDK, trying to re-sign Castellanos.

I'm pretty sure we're looking at 4th place this year.

Castellanos isn't a huge loss--everything from his past performance suggests that his numbers after the Cubs got him last year were merely a dead cat bounce--but the bullpen is looking bad.

IDK, considering the complete lack of effort so far, Castellanos for 2 or 3 years max would be a risk worth taking (for any team actually wanting to win that is).
 
It turns out Dusty got a lot better about not abusing his starters.

Yeah, Prior and Wood were part of Dusty's learning curve, unfortunately. And yeah, I know some of Prior's issues came from tripping over 1st or 2nd base (can't remember exactly) or the 1st or 2nd baseman, but he was still overused after all that.

I still remember hearing about Prior's "perfect mechanics" when he was drafted. I wonder if that would have held true with another manager.

Prior was never the same after Baker left him in after that basepath collision with Marcus Giles and that liner off his elbow.

Thanks, that collision is what I was straining to remember correctly. I knew it was something stupid that had nothing to do with pitching.

Also, Nicolas Castellanos officially signs with the Reds. Meanwhile, the Cubs ink 30 year old retread Steven Souza Jr and 32 year old Brewers castoff, pitcher Jeremy Jeffress "their first big league signing of the winter" per espn.com :rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

It's like the Tribune era came back and nobody told us.

But won't anyone think of the billionaires who own the Cubs? They don't want to pay a few million dollars in luxury taxes!

Don't worry. Think of the excitement for those future fans in 100 years coming to watch the Cubs finally win another one after so long. The cheers you hear trough the Sprite Wrigley Dome will be mind blowing. Watching 1st baseman player unit 43J3 hit a game winning home run will be up their with Kirk Gibson's homer in 1988 as a baseball classic moment.. The fans will no doubt feel the risk they took of traversing the sandy dunes of Chicago and having to avoid ravenous Mole Mutants to go see the game was really worth it.

It's horseshit (yeah, Olt went on the DL literally the day Bryant was called up and the day after he passed Super 2 eligibility, no coincidence there, no sir, nothing to see), but legally it's probably the correct ruling, in that the MLBPA doesn't have MiLB players among its membership, and I don't know why anyone would have thought it would go any other way.

I'm not sure where things go from here, though. The MLBPA is toothless and won't initiate a work stoppage over service time fuckery.

Mike Olt's ineffable character needed to be on the roster for exactly twelve days. To insist it was manipulation is to do a disservice to Mike Olt and players like him everywhere.

God, fuck the Ricketts family.

When does the current CBA expire? Will the MLBPA try to get that ruling out of the next one?

The current CBA runs out on December 31, 2021. It's hard to tell where the union will dig its heels in, but it's known that the owners are going to push for a hard salary cap.
