MLB Pseudo-Season 2020: Roger, Dodgers

Did I see correctly that Mark bleeping Prior is the Dodgers' pitching coach? What's he going to teach young pitchers, how to milk hangnails into days off; how to say, "Ouch"; how to turn every ache into a life-threatening injury. Remember that kid in high school who always came to school with an Ace bandage wrap on some imaginary hurt? Or an arm in a sling? That was Prior.

I don't remember all that. I do remember Mark being one of Dusty's victims during his "hates pitchers" era.

This is an odd level of hatred for Prior. His shoulder and elbow were ground into dust because of his inverted-W delivery.

By age 25? Just 600+ innings? John Smoltz pitched in the inverted W style, got Tommy John surgery, changed his delivery and went on to play 20 years. Are you saying Prior's joints were so far gone by age 25 that he was beyond repair? What part did the Achilles problem in his sophomore year play in his demise, if any?

Fuck me. Not everyone is Hall-of-Famer John Smoltz.
The only guy who I could think of with the inverted W besides Strasburg - Strasburg doesn't have the surgery or longevity for my example. I was only trying to say that surviving that pitching motion is certainly possible. It needn't be a death sentence - especially at only 25 years old

Strasburg has otherworldly conditioning. Prior didn't, especially because he had that quack Tom House having him do those stupid-ass "towel drills" to try to reinforce his ligaments (lawl), just as Kerry Wood never recovered from his elbow exploding due to his slurve (the delivery was violent). Dusty Baker was absolutely in his "murder all pitchers" phase at the time, but Prior was doomed from the time that he was in college (USC, I think?); his arm was a ticking time bomb and teams bought into it.

But Prior's mechanics were "teh perfect". I remember that specifically being written when he was drafted.

That's because Tom House would say that to any reporter who'd listen.

Then it came out that House was full of shit with dumbass concepts like "towel drills" and whatever.

Tom House had one claim to fame - he caught Aaron's 715th. As a pitching "guru" he was the proverbial box of rocks. Mike Marshall, former Dodger reliever with a degree in kinesiology, was one who gave an early warning about the inverted W. Wonder what he's doing now.

He's not the only ex-Astro to say that. It's not surprising that that sentiment is held mostly by pitchers. They would not have been in on the scam, but they surely must have sympathy for their fellow pitchers around the league.

I don't know that I believe it, to be honest. It is a nice thing to say when no one is asking for the ring back.

Rizzo is having a good time with it.
