Except errors are completely subjective and a player is at the mercy of the official scorer.
As is every umpire's call subjective. I was just saying if Jones was a butcher likewise for Schmidt. They were both at the mercy of official scorers. Unless, of course, you wish do do a shitload of research and add a "scorer" weighting to each's defensive metrics.

What do you think will happen if the Astros win the World Series again? They still have enough talent to do it. Would that not be the most crazy story of the year and also will we be talking about this cheating scandal all season long?

Wouldn't bother me to have another downtown parade. We're not getting any of those from the Texans or Rockets anytime soon. LOL

I'll be the first to admit that defensive metrics are the Gordian knot that will likely never be untied. But this goes into what you said about statisticians not watching games, which is absolutely false. Jones had almost no range, almost as little as Jeter did in the last decade of his career, and beyond that, he didn't have the rocket arm that Schmidt did.

Edit: Seriously, if you hit a grounder or a line drive within 15 - 20 feet of Schmidt, he was going to nail you at first. He was an otherworldly talent.

Meanwhile in Philadelphia, the Phillies revealed an updated Phillie Phanatic costume, which i guess is an attempt to modify the design enough that they could continue using the character if the Phanatic's original designers, Bonnie Erickson (who worked with Jim Henson in the '70s and '80s and designed, among other characters, Miss Piggy) and her husband Wayde Harrison.

For those of you not familiar with this kerfuffle, SI.com has a good overview.

I don't agree with this, because it harms players who weren't on the team in 2017.

Allow players who weren't on the roster in 2017 the option to opt-out. What we got from the Commissioner's Office hardly qualifies as a slap on the wrist. It was an organization effort to cheat, punish the entire organization. Make the Astros sit out for a couple of seasons of post-season play would have a far heavier effect on cheating than what was done to by Manfred.

But then your screwing the fans of the Astros and also the city of Huston to the point where you might even be impacting their economy if people stop coming to the games.

Seems like there's a moral to the story somewhere in there then. Oh, yeah... don't cheat.

But the fans didn't cheat. Only Carlos Beltran and nobody else at all in the entire league and in the entire history of the sport.

I'll be perfectly honest, my feelings about any "professional" sport where the true game is about millionaire players fighting billionaire owners over our money that we spend on them is actually kind of disgusting if you think about it.

But, if they wear a Houston uniform I'll show some interest if they're on free TV. I hardly watch baseball or basketball because you have to pay to watch them on TV, and I've been cable free for years. There are many people in this forum that obviously follow baseball closer than me, and I do believe I've been (accurately) called a fair-weather fan. LOL

But, if there's an argument to be had on the internet, that's always fun.

Yup, wanting to go see a game and having to pay outrageous parking and concession prices. I'm pretty much done with actually going to a major league game. I might still consider it if I had the chance to visit an out of town park say while on vacation but for the most part, I'm fine watching it from my couch. I save money and hassle and I'm far more comfortable.
Umm...who cares?

A few years ago they has a tv rating 0.0 and were dead last in the AL in attendance, the city and and economy survived.

Nice to see all those hardcore fans supporting the team when it wasn't very good. :guffaw:
