MLB Offseason: All Rise for the Judge

The Marlins have no numbers to retire because they get rid of everyone who becomes good.

José Fernandez's number was taken out of circulation after his death. But it hasn't been formally retired.

Are the Marlins the only MLB team which, apart from Jackie Robinson, have no retired numbers?

Marlins 0, Rockies 1 (Todd Helton). Somehow the Rays have 2 (Wade Boggs, Don Zimmer). Is the rumor about the backroom HOF cap deal with Boggs true?

They aren't ever going to retire it, because he was high and drunk when he crashed the boat that killed him and his two friends.

No. It's just that - a rumor. There's no evidence.

There had to be some smoke to that fire, because it was shortly after Boggs' induction that the Hall of Fame Committee stopped giving the final choice of the team hat to the player and instead make the decision themselves.

In a reversal from what was announced last year, MLB is keeping the ghost runner in extra innings going forward.

I don't have any problem with the ghost runner, but I don't get the shift ban.

Nationals founding principal owner Ted Lerner dies at the age of 97 due to complications from pneumonia.

Derek Jeter will join the Fox Sports studio.

Seriously. The shift has been around since the '50s, and good players found a way around it.

It's yet another solution in search of a problem, because MLB's commissioner thinks the sport is boring. (Because he's a goddamn lawyer who has spent his entire career dedicated to destroying unions.)

That explains it!

Agreed, retiring numbers is one of the lamest ways to honor someone.

As much a Yankee fan as I am, even I think they're overdoing it. They retire numbers at the slightest provocation. I mean, I'm not saying that there's necessarily those of them who don't deserve it...but just dial it back a bit, fellas.

I'm curious what happens when the Yankees run out of numbers to retire? Do we go to letters? Alphanumeric combinations? ("Now batting, number A7...")

Talking of the Marlins, they actually did have a retired number once: 5, in honor of the first ever team president (Carl Barger, who died before the Marlins played their first game, and whose favorite player was Joe DiMaggio). They unretired #5 when Logan Morrison asked to wear it because his father's favorite player was George Brett.

(Jon Berti wears #5 now.)

Exactly. I can get behind the pitch clock, but this is just silly.

Sport is strategy, the metaphorical field of battle. This is like one side declared "it's too hard," stamping their feet like a petulant child and the parent feels the need to level the playing field to make them feel better. Good players and good managers would find a way around it.
